Nintendo Wii game Star Trek: Conquest
has been available for almost a month now but it seems that the
franchise's installed fan base are completely unaware of its existence.

Here are two new video clips for the upcoming Nintendo Wii version of Star Trek: Conquest.
The first one is just a teaser video while the other is actually a
trailer which serves as a preview to the things Star Trek: Conquest has to offer.
The title is being developed by Bethesda Softworks and will also be available on the PlayStation 2 this holiday season. Star Trek: Conquest is somewhat of a hybrid as it offers both turn-based and real-time strategy gameplay. Aside from that, the game also has an arcade combat feel to it that is sure to keep all the Trekkies up all night long. Lead Designer Frank Arnot mentioned once that the storyline is going to be as engaging as well. This game, take note, is not to be confused with Activision's PC title Star Trek: ConQuest Online. See the other Star Trek: Conquest video after the jump! |

Bethesda Softworks recently let slip that they were developing a new game called Star Trek: Conquest. Now we bring you word about Lead Designer Frank Arnot and the few details he revealed in an interview by DailyGame.net.He described Conquest as a game of galactic domination that mixes turn-based strategy game and arcade elements in one package. Arnot then went on to say that this interesting mix of gameplay elements heavily influenced the storyline, making it much more straightforward than their previous Star Trek game: Star Trek Legacy. He described it as such: It is a time of unrest, all the major races are at war. Age-old alliances are forgotten, diplomacy is dead. Powerful fleets prowl the galaxy establishing outposts and vanquishing indigenous and enemy fleets alike in the pursuit of the ultimate prize - the capture of all home worlds and galactic domination. As most would probably attest, the combination of turn-based strategy and arcade games hasn't really been much of a success historically speaking. Bethesda looks to change that by developing a way to split the the turn-based and arcade aspects of the game without making it intrusive or too jarring for the player as Arnot said in the interview: The objective of the game is to capture the home worlds of the other enemy races and dominate the game board. In order to achieve this, the game is split into two sections: 1. A turn-based strategy section and, 2. An arcade space combat section. During the strategic phase players can give orders to fleets, commission new admirals, purchase new ships and build structures such as star bases, research stations and mining facilities. As fleets move around the galactic map, if they enter hostile systems or encounter enemy fleets, then a battle occurs. These battles can be resolved by either watching a top level strategic visualisation of the battle or by entering arcade mode and taking direct control of your fleet and engaging the enemy. This game is sounding better and better the more we hear about it. However, we can't really make any judgments until the final product rolls out. For those of us who could fondly remember the point-and-click adventures of Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty and the expendable ensign on the PC game made by Interplay, Star Trek: 25th Anniversary - here's some good news that may very well get us into that Trekkie fever all over again: A next-gen Star Trek title for the Nintendo Wii named Star Trek: Conquest, courtesy of the good folks over at Bethesda Softworks. In this title, armchair admirals will be able to command Federation, Romulan, Klingon, Cardassian, Dominion and Breen forces in a campaign to take control of the entire galaxy as we know it - one planet at a time. Using the game's turn-based strategy mechanics to your favor, create unstoppable fleets of starships and an impenetrable fortress to show that you mean business, and that your enemies, wherever they may be, will not live and prosper for much longer by way of the Wii's motion-tracking abilities. Combat in Star Trek: Conquest is where the Wii's unique capabilities will shine as well. Once you engage your enemies in ship-to-ship combat, the game sits you directly on the Admiral's Chair, giving you complete control of the Starship currently in battle. Using the Nunchuk attachment to maneuver and the Wiimote to dispense destruction-by-photon-torpedoes, you'll experience all the drama and tension of ship-to-ship combat, with the safety of your ship (and your crew) riding on your shoulders. While it's not the point-and-click adventure we were crossing our fingers for, Star Trek: Conquest is definitely a title we should keep an eye out on, the title pencilled in for a Holiday release. Till then, watch this space for more updates. |

The official name of the Star Trek MMORPG is Star Trek: ConQuest Online. Now, rental chain Gamefly has just listed a video game of the same title but for the Nintendo Wii. We checked around the Internet about this new game but it seems that this is the first "announcement" for the console version. What's really intriguing about Gamefly's listing is that it already has a box art image of Star Trek: ConQuest as you can see in this article. If you look closely at the image, it sports the logo of Bethesda Softworks. In case you are not aware, the company owns the Star Trek license. Also, the game is still to be rated by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB). Aside from the already mentioned, no other details are currently available. We are not even certain if the Wii title will be based from the MMO video game or if it'll be an entirely new game. However, we think it's quite safe to say that Bethesda will be making Star Trek: ConQuest compatible with the Wiimote and Nunchuk. According to Gamefly, the title will be released on November 30. Updates as we get them! |

More informations makes itself known for the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) for this year, as we disclose details for the event's Omegathon competition, keynote speaker, and headliner band. For the pre-registrants of Penny Arcade's upcoming PAX 2007 event, we imagine one thing you'll be looking forward to (or dread) is the Omegathon event. This yearly PAX event pits 20 randomly chosen "Omeganauts" from the pre-registered crowd in multiple bouts of tabletop, videogame and computer game matches, culminating in a final match conducted onstage in front of PAX's thousands of (expected) attendees. This year's Omegathon grand price is a trip for two to the Tokyo Game Show (September 22 to 23), plus US$ 5,000 in travel money. Not exactly a new truck, but given the price of gas these days, we like it. On the matter of PAX's keynote speaker, the organizers have managed to pick up Wil Wheaton - trekkies will remember him as Wesley Crusher from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Outside his acting role, Wheaton has also authored two books: Dancing Barefoot, and Just a Geek. As for tunes, PAX 2007 is expected to dance to the tunes of The Minibosses - gamers will this band for its rock revisions of the music of classic titles like Mega Man, Metroid, and Castlevania. Other musical guests expected to make it to the event are The OneUps, MC Frontalot, Jonathan Coulton, Freezepop, The Neskimos and Optimus Rhyme. This year's PAX will be held from Aug. 24 to 26, at the Washington State Trade and Convention Center in Seattle. Ticket prices for both pre-registration and on-site registration should be available at Penny Arcade's PAX site (read link). |

Totally Games' Alien Syndrome work for the PSP and Wii only marks one of many milestones for this storied developer, well-known among older gamers for X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, for starters. TG founder and president Larry Holland talks to Gamasutra about three things, one of which this writer severely disagrees with.
The gameplay of this new version definitely places emphasis on the action component of the ARPG genre by requiring the player to refine his skill with range and melee weaponry in order to progress through the game. In addition there is plenty of loot to collect, weapons to upgrade, character skills and proficiencies to balance and an inventory to manage. In summary, the game is all new, with new characters, weapons, environments, gameplay and a new story. Therefore this version of Alien Syndrome is not a simple graphics upgrade but a complete re-design from the ground. The result is an intense, ranged-combat oriented game with lots of strange and horrific aliens threatening to tear the player from limb to limb. The Wii version of Alien Syndrome will come with special mini-games designed around the Wiimote's motion-sensing, geared to crafting items for the player. The interface will also be unique to the game (likely because you use the Wiimote with the interface, no doubt). Other than that, Holland says the Wii and PSP versions "share much" and are being developed concurrently. Talking about working on a government project, and breaking the hearts of all X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter veterans everywhere at the full article. |
