NES controller - Image 1Nothing says "gamer inside" on your front door like having a NES controller for a doorbell. In this unrevealed gamer home, a NES controller was modded into a wireless doorbell, giving visitors an added treat when coming over. Video inside.

NES Controller - Image 1After 8 years and 12 piercings, BME user metal_games wants to move on to other forms of art he can apply to his body. But instead of going down the tattoo road, this guy opted to go for scarification, wherein you intentionally scar yourself to create a pattern or an image. The interesting bit here is that the design isn't what you usually see - it's the image of the NES controller. For the squeamish, the pics may not be too suitable for you guys.

Groovy Wiimote mod: the Hemp-Mote - Image 1AcidMods does some great Wiimote mods, but this one has my vote. In a bid to give the Wiimote a fuzzy, natural feel to replace its cold, white plastic, modder DHRECK made an exterior made entirely of hemp. Hemp cordage, I mean. Oh, you.

Ben Heck - Image 1If your strumming hand for Guitar Hero is becoming a bit worse for wear, then good news: Ben Heck, modder of all that is next-gen, has come up with a way to make your foot do all the work instead. Introducing Ben Heckendorn's own brand of pedal controllers, a peripheral that lets you strum and whammy with the merest movement of your foot. All the details in the full article.

Mod project: The Super Mario Bros-themed Wii - Image 1Nothing exemplifies the gamer fandom as explicitly as a customized console. That said, we're letting you know of a mod project that takes one Nintendo Wii, and turns it into a proverbial art piece with some surprisingly practical uses. Details and screens are available in the full article.

No, this is not another mod where a Wii was made to look like an old NES. The folks of Engadget say that if you take equal parts SNES guts, blue LED glowy-ness, and Wii casing, mix them all together and you get the "Nintendo Super Nii" - an SNES made to look like a Wii. God bless DS modder Kotomi for this little bundle of joy.

This of course makes use of the real classic controller. It also ignores Virtual Console in favor of true old school swag. Behold the glory:

The problem with this is that like the Wii it currently has very limited online multiplayer functionality - that is, it has none. It also can't play DVDs. Sorry, we jest. Can't help it.

Our "read" link below should lead to the modder's official posting. Head there if you're curious about them, just run it through an online translation engine if you need to.

Chiip's components are very cheap. - Image 1This should interest the Wii-loving handymen out there. We found out there was someone offering plans for people to make their very own modchip from scratch... an open source modchip project, if you will.

Developed by Cadex, Chiip builds upon the concepts of the existing modchips as currently existing Wii modchips (Wiinja, Wiikey, etc.) require only one microcontroller. Not that it's easy to build, of course, but it's definitely simpler with only one microcontroller. Best of all, it should take a dedicated modder only a few bucks to buy everything needed for it.

Speaking of building though, you run the risk of breaking your Wii if you try this, so inexperienced modders need not apply. The rewards may be great, but the risks are equally so. In any case, if you're good with your hands, it's definitely worth learning about.

It's not exactly the prettiest, but it's definitely one of the more functional mods we've seen for Nintendo's cute little console. Tired of having to reach around his console to plug his GameCube controllers in, Hollowfreak did what any self-respecting modder would do: he made the GC controller ports face the front.

As you can see from the above two pictures, he's actually modded his Wii to accommodate the controllers on the front of the console rather than on the back. It may have doubled the size of the console, but you certainly can't doubt its usefulness, especially if you're a big guy.

Now, some of you may think it's not that pretty anymore, or that the Wii isn't very Wii-ish now, as a result of its increased size. We think it's actually kind of cool, and the size makes it actually look like a souped-up GameCube now, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. For now, feel free to check out the link, as there are a ton other screenshots featuring the actual building process.
