15,000 counterfeit Nintendo products seized in Mexico - Image 1Nintendo's war on pirated goods is well documented. Just last month the company, along with some customs agents, were able to stop a shipment of over 5,500 counterfeit Nintendo products from China.

The Big N also lent their support to local authorities during a raid of the San Juan de Dios market in Guadalajara to confiscate 56,000 Nintendo products.

Just recently, another blow was struck against the counterfeiters after 15,000 pirated Nintendo products were seized by Mexican authorities. The raid was carried out in one of the "fayuka" or contraband markets in the country. Nintendo of America’s senior director of anti-piracy Jodi Daugherty spoke about Nintendo's focus on Mexico:

Mexico is Nintendo’s largest market in Latin America, where the problem of video game piracy is widespread. Since January, Nintendo has worked with law enforcement agencies worldwide to seize 100,000 counterfeit Wii games.

Nintendo, with its developers and publishers, lost about US$ 762 million in sales back in 2006 from piracy, so it's understandable why the company is making this issue its top priority.

It seems that Mexico is really coming on its own as an established and profitable videogame market, or at least it is for Nintendo. Today, we came across a website called Club Nintendo MX with details about the Wii on Wheels Tour in Mexico.

So watch out for that roving truck with Wii gaming stations available for fans to try. Good publicity move (after all, a similar act was performed by Sony with the PS3).

The first stop was at Wal-Mart Lomas Verdes in Mexico, DF, from February 9 to 11. Here are the other stops for our Mexico-based readers:
  • Wii on Wheels - Image 1 February 16 to 18: Mexico, DF

This just in, guys: the new Wii promo trailer! According to Rawmeatcowboy, this came straight from "the official Nintendo magazine in Mexico." While it looks a little dubious, this stuff looks official enough and to be honest, it looks sweet. The two and a half minute video features as always, people having loads and loads of Wii fun.

This time around though, Nintendo focused more on the wide array of these individuals: there are kids playing, girlfriends, grandparents, casual and hardcore gamers alike. The upbeat backup music meshed well with the in-game sounds and the various cheering of players. Watch the video until the end as it showcases anticipated titles such as Red Steel, Trauma Center, Rayman Raving Rabbids and of course, Zelda.

Ubisoft ShowUbisoft's going South the border this time around as they announce the opening of their new business today in Mexico City, Mexico. "Opening an office in Mexico is a strategic decision for Ubisoft," said said Olivier Ernst, Ubisoft's general manager of operations in Canada and Latin America.

"The Mexican market shows more stability than before and we believe it provides an amazing opportunity for growth in video games. We look forward to showing off a selection of our most highly anticipated titles for the Holiday 2006 season in Mexico City."

The new office opens up with a new core team that'll help improve Ubisoft's business relations and market shares in the area. It will be under the command of area manager Etienne-Charles Nobert, who in turn reports to señor Ernst.

In related news, Ubisoft has also announced their presence at the Electronic Games Show in Mexico City, Mexico, and will be presenting the following games at their booth:
The EGS will be opening this October 27 to 29 at the Mexico City World Trade Center, and with 30,000 visitors expected to arrive, it's said to be the largest game convention in Latin America.

With the countdown to the Wii's release starting to wind down, the deluge of Wii promotions have begun to go on full swing all over the world. With it's UK print ads and its appearance in a German TV show, Nintendo seems keen on their plans for world and market domination.

Courtesy of GoNintendo and AussieNintendo, we currently have some more samples of the Wii's international appearances. For example, an Australian K-mart flier already features the Wii alongside other games and consoles, while another flyer comes from Switzerland, showing the Wii, its accessories as well as list of launch and upcoming titles.

In the meantime, EB Games in Australia is starting to fill up their Wii sections with console and game boxes (or are those really just boxes...?) to give people a taste of things to come. And as we move on to the other side of the world, Nintendo star-child has also been spotted in Mexican game stores, as shown in a video that was taken by emmiranda.

With all this excitement building up, one can't help but start wishing that the release of this console would somehow miraculously come faster than we hope.

FTW, indeed.

Update: And a gigantic ad has been spotted at Toys R Us in Times Square. You can't tell, but we're doing happy dances as we write this update to Kristine's article.

Mexican computerWhat do Mexican online stores have that their American counterparts don't? Uhm, we don't know exactly but they are dishing out pre-order deals for the Wii. As of now, other online stores like Gamestop and Gamecrazy do not have such offers. Amazon stopped taking reservations as well.

The first offer we reported on was at a store called Game Planet. This time, another one is spotted over at Sanborns, one of Mexico's major retail chains. The console will be making its debut in the Americas on November 19 with a suggested retail price of $249.99. Ordering the console now at Sanborns will cost 4,699 Pesos (roughly around $425).

Actually, pricing for Wii varies for each location. The Mexican site is, of course, aware of this hence the warning: "En caso de que el precio de esta preventa sea menor el día de la liberación, se le reembolsará la diferencia correspondiente."

We know most of you didn't quite understand that. It simply means should the pre-sale amount is smaller than the launch day price, the corresponding difference will be collected from the buyers. Hmm, now that's interesting...

excite truckGiven that Excite Truck is a racing game, you guys would probably want to know more about how fast you can actually speed down lanes. We can't tell you exactly how fast (are we talking mph here?) but what we can tell you though is how the Wiimote will enhance the good old racing genre via the Excite Truck experience.

After you get past the absurd title for the game (shouldn't it at least be ExciteD Truck? Or maybe that's just us?), you'll soon realize that it brings back a lot of childhood memories with its bicycle counterpart Excite Bike. But before we start going down memory lane and drift off to Nostalgia County, let's get back on track (pun intended) with Excite Truck and its controls.

First off, to play the game, you'll use the Wiimote turned on its side and held horizontally, like your conventional controller. The 1 and 2 buttons function as your brakes and accelerator (respectively) while you just let your left thumb sit on the D-pad.

Read on for more mad driving details!

Mexico Pre-Order

It seems pre-orders for the Wii have begun in Mexico at a store called Game Planet. The console's price? 4,490 Pesos. That's the equivalent of about 450 USD. The blogger who reported it says that he expects other stores to be doing it for around 3500 Pesos or the equivalent of 350 USD. The release date? They're uncertain but "probably the end of November" was the statement.

Piracy in Mexico is big and most games are pirated. The high price of hardware might be because they won't be seeing much money out of software. Also, Nintendo doesn't seem to be the distributor in Mexico so that might be a problem too. Hopefully, they'll start representing themselves in Mexico if this is really the case. Note that Nintendo's already doing something similar in Korea.

You can read up on more Wii launch details in the following countries:
If we get any more info on any other countries, we'll be sure to let you know!
