A call for developers to continue the cancelled WiiCR - Image 1Jacob Jarick has given word that he is officially retiring from developing WiiCR, a media player solution for the Wii. This is unfortunate news for the rest of the community as the homebrew was supposed to allow the console to act as a media server.

In addition to this, the final version was said to be capable of transcoding nearly any video file to the flv format for an embedded flash player and allow remote filesystem viewing of videos and other media.

In the official site of the homebrew, the developer said that "I'm officially retiring from development of this project with the reason being I am utterly bored with the Nintendo Wii software library and sick to death of the 1/2 arsed opera browser." He then cited a few of the shortcomings of the console as his reason for dropping the project.

At the end of his farewell post, he noted that anyone is free to take over the project if they want to. Hopefully, some enterprising coder will take up the mantel and continue this program's development.

TVersity - Image 1

QJ reader Ryvis informs us that the latest update to the TVersity Media Server is now available at the official site. Since it's been several months since we last posted about this, here's a little refresher: TVersity features on the fly transcoding to WMV for the Xbox 360, and allows for management of various media files. It can be used to create a personalized sequence of channels. It also serves the said media to networked devices in your home.

Version 0.9.10.1 was released on April 19, 2007, and as of this writing, folks from the official site, say that release notes for the new version are "coming soon." However, we do know that, in this version, video support for the PlayStation 3, the Wii, the Nokia N800, and video for the Sony PSP is featured.

Oh, and for you Wii owners out there eager to try this out, please be aware that the developers note that due to their inability to get a Nintendo Wii, support for the Wii is experimental and was only tested via a desktop version of the Opera browser.

For more information on the application, feel free to head to the official site via our "read" link below. If in case the download link that they've got isn't working that well, we have one for you folks to use below. Enjoy folks!

WiiCR logo - Image 1Most of you should be very familiar with WiiCR by now, so we'll be very quick about this. Jacob Jarick's media player solution for the Wii just got another upgrade, and has now been upped to version 0.3.2-RC5.

In case you're new to the Wii dev scene, here's a quick sit-rep: WiiCR turns your Nintendo Wii into a streaming media server capable of transcoding most video formats into the .FLV file format flash players use. It also functions as a JPG viewer and MP3 player - DS fans can consider this a bigger (and online-savy) cousin of their beloved Moonshell app.

Moving on to the changelog:
  • Fixed video_objects not loading.
  • 0.3.2-RC4 released
  • Fixed dl filename issue
  • Resolved text links not working with html op characters in lsdir by swapping to a form and using js to submit the link (icons1 only atm).
  • Improved shoutcast support (will give preference to urls using port 80 and no path).
  • Added asx movie file extension list (asx's will play now).
  • Users can now restrict directory access by listing the full path to the directory in restricted.txt
Now, for the guys who are having problems uploading the bundle's contents (it's admittedly fiddly for newcomers) we advise checking out the dev team's installation wiki, available at the source link. Given the sort of strides we're looking at for the Wii's DVD player, expect apps like this to get a lot more use in the near future...

The WiiCR

So what exactly is WiiCR? Well, its name is a Wii-word-play on VCR, so that should give you an idea of what it does. And no it doesn't run on your Wii. It runs on your PC, but the Wii can access it through a webpage.

WiiCR is a media player solution for the Nintendo Wii. The application intends to act as a streaming media server and is capable of transcoding almost any video file to a suitable .FLV for an embedded flash player. The application also allows for browsing of the remote file system so that users can select videos. It also allows users to view text files, look at .JPGs and play mp3s.

Instructions for installation and download links are available at the WiiCR's wiki at WiiBrew Wiki. If you want to try out the program and see if it's good enough for you, just click on our read-link below.

One more tool in the many Wii-media solutions/work-arounds out there.
