Hong Kong Electronics Fair: Wiimote-like controller for PC - Image 1Whether you like it or not, the Nintendo Wii has introduced a different kind of gaming experience with its motion-sensing capabilities. That is why several companies have been trying to emulate the Wiimote.

On this note, we found another one displayed at the Hong Kong Electronics fair and the controller was for PC units. Curious? More on this after the jump!

Nintendo - Image 1Nintendo has circulated a press release chronicling the latest news in its ongoing battle against piracy. According to the press release, the Hong Kong High Court ordered the raid of facilities owned by Supreme Factory Limited earlier this month at Nintendo's request.

The raid turned up more than 10,000 game copying devices and mod chips used to play pirated Nintendo software. The seized copying devices were used mostly for pirating Nintendo DS games. The mod chips were mostly for use in Nintendo's Wii home video game console.

Documents found at the raid site connected Supreme Factory Limited to French company Divineo SARL. Divineo SARL and its principal, Max Louarn, have also been named in the legal action initiated by Nintendo.

Modded Wii - Image 1There are some rumors going around that the latest batch of Nintendo Wiis coming out of Japan will be unmoddable. Now, we say rumors because unless we get more reports on the said batch or get news from Nintendo Company Ltd., we can't confirm it.

The Japanese version is said to have 3-pins physically cut from a surface-mounted IC, thus making it unmoddable. Now, just for those who choose to act on this, it's said that there are still some moddable units available in 188 and Golden (we're assuming these are in Hong Kong).

If you're in the area and want a moddable Wii for yourself, you better move pretty quickly since everyone's going to be gunning for those units. The Wii NTSC-U hasn't undergone the change yet but if it proves to be an efficient way of stopping pirates, then it could be heading our way.

This should be of no concern for those who only play licensed original games (like we do) but those who insist on playing pirated games may be in for some problems. We also came across the picture of the said IC Chip with the 3 pins cut so it's up to you if you decide to put stock in this. More on this as more information comes up.

Brando Wii Light Gun - Image 1In "light" of the previous Crystal Cooler stand, Hong Kong-based e-shop Brando has released another accessory for the Duck Hunt enthusiasts. While light gun accessories are a dime a dozen, there's always some advantage in having consumer choice. You've got Piranha's W14 light gun and Joytech's Sharp Shooter, now meet their little cousin, Vinnie  the Brando Wii Light Gun.

As other Wiimote attachments go, all you have to do is slap your Wii remote on top of the device and go all trigger-happy on screen. The device also supports the Nunchuk, which you can attach at the butt of the gun's grip.

It's now available for US$ 19. Pretty cheap, and could be a good "interim" accessory if you're still waiting for the official Nintendo Wii light gun. You can click the Read link below to access Brando's product page for their light gun.

Wii Crystal Cooler from Brando - Image 2 Wii Crystal Cooler from Brando - Image 3 Wii Crystal Cooler from Brando - Image 1

As far as we are concerned, we have yet to meet a gamer who can claim that the Wii has heat problems. We are in fact rather convinced that this video game console doesn't need any supplemental cooling. However, we stumbled upon an accessory today that can make all of that moot.

Hong Kong's Brando is currently offering Wii Crystal Cooler. It's not a cooling fan per se as the accessory is actually an ordinary stand pimped with blue LED lights. The fan was just an added feature. Speaking of which, Brando listed the following as well:
  • Built in High Velocity Fan
  • Reduce your console temperature, prolonging the life of your Wii Console
  • Cool Blue LED Light adds style to your gaming setup
  • You can turn off the LED and the fan by the ON/OFF switch
  • USB Power
  • Clear, Soft color stylize your Wii
  • Provides Safety, support, and added stability
We haven't tried this Crystal Cooler ourselves but we heard that the product will not automatically turn on should in detect a rise in temperature. There's a switch somewhere there that users should manually hit to make turn on the fan. But still, with a US$ 19 price tag, Crystal Cooler actually has some potential.

The Read link below should take you to Brando's product page where you can order Wii Crystal Cooler online.

Wii modchips used to not work on this model of Wii - Image 1It looks like Nintendo's European branch has started taking notice of the folks who are out to mod or alter their Wiis. A new post on the Nintendo U.K. website warns against the use of modchips to circumvent copy protection.

While we all can probably guess what it says, they didn't hesitate to point out the illegality of using modchips as well as the warranty-voiding properties of using one. Said Nintendo of the unauthorized modding of Wiis for this purpose,

The use of mod chips voids the manufacturer's warranty. In addition, the installation of a mod chip can damage the functionality of a Nintendo console, sometimes rendering it incapable of repair. Mod chips have been adjudicated to be illegal in various countries around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. Most European countries have also already adopted laws prohibiting the circumvention of technological measures for copyright protection. People caught installing or selling mod chips may be subject to criminal charges.

It's probably obvious to anyone who uses modchips, but let this be a warning to you. Nintendo's got their eyes on the modding community, for both good applications of their Wii technology and bad.

Cyclowiz - Image 1It's been a while since the last Cyclowiz update, but we're pleased to hear about the latest information Team Cyclops has on the Cyclowiz modchip. According to their news, the latest drive revisions of the Wii are "100% compatible" with their modchip.

Here's what they had to say about this little development:

First of all, we received two new Wii consoles for testing, one from Japan and one from Hong Kong. Both have the new drive revision that was spotted in Taiwan last week. Guess what, while the drive PCB is different, CycloWiz has been tested and is 100% compatible with the new boards! Not only is it working as usual, but it is possible to install it using quick-solder method, as the alignment of the points didn't change. (emphasis theirs)

In addition to this, they also have a new upgrade ready for people to try out. There's now an upgrade 3.0B that is compatible with D2B chipsets. According to Team Cyclops though, you won't need to run it if you already have 3.0 on your modded Wii.

HPMany have speculated that the Wii's advent to the gaming realm has sparked a revolution in gaming (pun unintended), as it has pushed developers to think of more innovative features to games (such as substituting a Wiimote for a baseball bat or something).

Sure, it has opened lots of possibilities for gamers, which is quite exciting really. Now, computer hardware company Hewlett-Packard is setting its sights on gaming as well, and it seems that they're upping the ante on gaming innovation further. HP VP Philip McKinney recently showed an intriguing video at a "major telco con in Hong Kong" that features kids playing a scavenger hunt using handhelds and "racing along alleyways and backstreets of the real world collecting clues posted on walls and other places to find the prize."

And it's all thanks to a nifty open-source platform called Mediascape, something that HP programmers have been working on. Whether we'll see this technology in the near future, we're not really sure. But it's exciting to know that devs are exploring new horizons in gaming.
