WiiCR logo - Image 1Most of you should be very familiar with WiiCR by now, so we'll be very quick about this. Jacob Jarick's media player solution for the Wii just got another upgrade, and has now been upped to version 0.3.2-RC5.

In case you're new to the Wii dev scene, here's a quick sit-rep: WiiCR turns your Nintendo Wii into a streaming media server capable of transcoding most video formats into the .FLV file format flash players use. It also functions as a JPG viewer and MP3 player - DS fans can consider this a bigger (and online-savy) cousin of their beloved Moonshell app.

Moving on to the changelog:
  • Fixed video_objects not loading.
  • 0.3.2-RC4 released
  • Fixed dl filename issue
  • Resolved text links not working with html op characters in lsdir by swapping to a form and using js to submit the link (icons1 only atm).
  • Improved shoutcast support (will give preference to urls using port 80 and no path).
  • Added asx movie file extension list (asx's will play now).
  • Users can now restrict directory access by listing the full path to the directory in restricted.txt
Now, for the guys who are having problems uploading the bundle's contents (it's admittedly fiddly for newcomers) we advise checking out the dev team's installation wiki, available at the source link. Given the sort of strides we're looking at for the Wii's DVD player, expect apps like this to get a lot more use in the near future...

WiiCR - Image 1While the Wii's news channel is already up and running, it just doesn't beat being able to view your choice popcorn flicks on this Nintendo console. And for that to happen, you might want to check out this latest incarnation of WiiCR, which has just turned 0.3.1.10.

Jacob Jarick and his development team have been pretty keen on keeping this app updated, which allows users to turn their Wii into a media player with video streaming capability. And like we said, the steady updates only makes this homebrew ever more streamlined and stable, as their changelog says:
  • Fixed bug with the mp3 pls generation, now sorted.
  • Sorted mp3 player not loading files with unfriendly characters.
  • Included shoutcast.tpl in icons1 (due to shifting shoutcast to a tpl automatic redirection will not work when you add a new mp3, simply click back then click on the mp3 player icon).
Jacob makes further mention that the team needs testers to help with smoothing out the app's encoder settings. For the guys downloading this app, that may mean some minor stability issues, which in turn means we also suggest checking out the version 3.1.9.

It could be a streaming media server and could transcode nearly any video file to a suitable flv for an embedded flash player. Aside from that, it also allows browsing of the remote filesystem to view videos, text files, images (in jpg format), and play mp3s. Any videophile with a Wii would find a friend in the WiiCr. Now that the trip down memory lane is over, let's get started with the changelog.

WiiCR icon - Image 1The WiiCR video player for the Wii just got an upgrade. The team behind this handy little app is announcing the release of version 0.3.1.7, which should host some improvements over 3.1.6. For the guys still uncertain about what this app does, it turns your Nintendo Wii into a multi-format video player - a feature we're sure the videophiles among you would love to make use of. As for the changelog:
  • Theme combo box defaults to current theme
  • WiinVi 0.8 (includes experimental irc support)
  • WiipaperMV 0.7
  • changed mencoder settings to vpb's (mine were slightly different) this should hopefully resolve vidplayback
  • Bug found in WiiCR config tool:

  • Corrupts apache file by appending to rather than overwriting the file, will be fixed when Ed gets a chance.

  • WiinVi 0.8 released

  • Some random Tweaks
  • IRC Client [BETA]
  • Browse while listening to Music [BETA]
  • Download
  • WiiCR Configuration Tool 0.1 released written by EdKrayer

WiiCR 0.3.1.7 , WiinVi 0.8, and WiiCR Configuration Tool 0.1 can all be found in the accompanying zip bundle. As you can see, they've been doing some serious tweaking to the 'brew this time around. In case you experience problems with the videoplayback feature, the team recommends switching back to the more stable version 3.1.5 until they announce a permanent fix to this bug.

WiiCROne day after the last release and the WiiCR Team has once again updated its Wii media player. For the uninitiated, WiiCR, created by Jacob Jarick, is a media player solution for the Nintendo Wii.

According to the WMC Wiki, WiiCR acts as a streaming media server and is capable of transcoding nearly any video file to a suitable flv for an embedded flash player. It allows browsing of the remote filesystem to view: videos (avi/xvid/divx/mpeg/wmv/etc), text files, jpg's and play mp3s.

Anyway, WiiCR is now at version 0.3.1.4b. It now includes the suba theme which has been updated to support WiiCR's new config. This new version also includes the Wiipaper 0.4r.1 and WiinVi 0.5-r2 themes as well as a fix for the shoutcast and config.pl forms.

If this is your first time downloading WiiCR, click on the via link for more information and installation instructions. For help with installing new themes, check out this previous QJ article.
