WabModCheap allows the Wii to play backup discs - Image 1 AloneTrio just informed us here at QJ that their pet project WabModCheap has just been updated to v2.2. In case you are not familiar with this tool, it is actually a program patch that will allow users to run backup discs on the Wii.

The great thing about WabModCheap is that it will not require users to have an actual chip installed into their consoles for it to work. To run this program, all you have to do is connect your Wii to the PC using parallel cables (4 wire Wii side). Please take note that the success of the program and all sync-related matters depend a lot on your parallel port (configuration, speed, etc.). For this version, hardcoded sync values were removed by AloneTrio so that every user can modify the program, based on their own needs.

The usage for WabModCheap v2.2 is ./WabModcheap RW_WAIT C_WAIT. And a good example would be ./WabModcheap 100 1000. Since hardcoding has been removed already, AloneTrio suggests trying other C_Wait values like 100, 200, 300, and so on.

Exciting trucking!

Lucky guy! Over at the Evil Avatar forums, Capn Crunch wrote about his experience with the Wii trial Kiosks at GameStop. Apparently, he was there right when the guy from Nintendo showed up to set the demo kiosk.

Some notable things from his account:
  • Even the fellow setting up the Wii didn't know why you needed to begin your Wii experience by using the startup disc. The whole thing about setting up the Wii with the disc takes less than two minutes though, so it shouldn't be a big deal unless there's spyware or they've placed a virus in the Wii that turns gamers into zombies.
  • According to Capn Crunch, they won't be tethering the Wii. You will, however, have to relinquish your driver's license and your credit card. No word on how people without those two things can play, but expect trained ninjas hiding in the shadows.
  • The disc drive is like a car stereo drive, he says, as it "pulls the media in. It can accept regular Wii games or GC games with no problem."
  • He got to try out Excite Truck on two-player mode, and mentioned a function of the game. You can press something on the Wiimote that enables you to actually alter the terrain as you choose. That sounds like one heck of a game mechanic.
Sound good to you? He also adds details on how to sync the controllers and other sorts of little details, and you can really feel the excitement coming from his post. He's happy he got the chance to play, and lucky for gamers everywhere, he was willing to share his experience with everyone.
