Super Air Zonk - Image 1If you're a fan of cute shooters, you'd better read this because we spotted the sub-genre's grand-daddy on the ESRB site and it's heading right over to the Nintendo Wii for a Virtual Console cameo. Yup, it's Super Air Zonk and it's set to flog for 800 Wii Points, but that's okay because you'll be getting tons of fun in return.

Originally released for the PC and the TurboGrafx in 1992, Super Air Zonk was a side-scrolling shoot-em up with quirky protagonists, hot action and some cool power-ups. Hordes of enemies stand in your way, but with a trusty trigger button and some dexterity, you'll find yourself in a simple but addictive little world.

Okay, so the graphics are as ancient as they come, but don't let that fool you. What we have here is a true-blue pioneer that was among the best of its day and set the benchmark where others followed. If you're all for raw, unadulterated fun, watch out for Super Air Zonk and watch the 8-bit sparks fly.

kotokComputer pioneer and inventor Allan Kotok, has died of a heart attack at age 64 in his home in Cambridge Massachusetts. A native of Philadelphia, Kotok is an MIT alum and a W3C associate chairman.

Known for being "technically adept well beyond the norm," Kotok worked for a variety of high tech firms. While working at Digital Equipment Corp (DEC) Kotok designed a family of computers, did some consulting and went on to fulfill various leadership roles.

His background in creating the AI for chess computers was subsequently found to be indispensable in his capacity as a tech researcher and game inventor. Mr. Kotok's life was a catalyst for growth in the fledgling gaming and computing industries of his time, and he is someone all gamers should know about.

Credited with creating the first videogame, along with the joysticks used to play them, his role in the history of gaming and computing in general cannot be overstated. Who knows, without his contributions to the history of gaming, the gaming industry we see today could be drastically different.

Mr. Kotok is survived by two daughters, a son and two grandsons. Everyone who uses computers or enjoys gaming today should recognize Alan Kotok as an integral figure in the evolution of the videogame industry.

Red SteelAn interesting interview has popped up on Overgame, a popular French gaming site, with Campos Oriola, the creator of Red Steel. In it, Oriola discusses how the game will keep its dark edge without the use of blood.

Several other topics arise including the advancement of motion sensitivity. "Based on progress that our [development] team made [with motion sensitivity] in four months, the detection of movements became more intuitive and will be pushed [by other developers] in [as short as] one year." Oriola believes that just as graphics improved with time on the previous generation systems, the Wiimote's features will be, too.

Another crazy rumor discussed with Oriola was the speculation that the Wii will be more powerful than the Xbox graphic-wise. A roundabout answer was given: "I do not have the right to speak in detail of what Wii can do graphically. What one can say [with all the features counted] is that the Wii is more powerful than Xbox, but there are things that the Xbox can make that the Wii cannot." Duh.

You can read the full interview after the jump.
