Tomonobu Itagaki - Image 1The time of controversy and lawsuits have passed. Team Ninja has moved on and so have Tomonobu Itagaki and his crew of ex-Team Ninja members. Teaming up with young but skilled engineers, the new team is now hard at work on a new game. Speaking with James Mielke of 1UP, Itagaki and his right-hand men spill a few droplets of detail (and scotch) to give us an idea of what they're up to.

Plumber and princess cliches - Image 11UP's James Mielke was ranting three weeks ago regarding the blatant use of the words "Call of", "Rise of", "Empire," "Nations," and "Ops" in game titles. (He was talking about Call of Juarez.) Well, we've lived through this type of stereotyping, but it doesn't mean we can't make fun of it right? Makes us wonder, do devs consult some sort of list when thinking of a title?

Anyway, the guys at GameSetWatch set out to come up with the "most stereotypical video game name... evah". The turnout was pretty crazy: Simon Carless (Game Developer/Gamasutra EIC) "Quaternion: The Beige-ning", Jill Duffy (Game Developer managing editor) came up with "Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's Call Of Duty: Revenge Of Duty", and Brandon Sheffield (Game Developer features editor) gave the hilarious "Pauly Shore's XTREME Nude Wakeboarding II: The Awakening". The winner was Frank Cifaldi (Gamasutra features editor) with "WWII: World War II".

My fellow QJ staffers gave a few bits of their own. Victor B. came up with two - "Space Shooter: The Star Galaxy Trek Wars of Gradius" and "Final Generic Fantasy RPG Quest XX" - while our researcher R gave me this - "Death Ride Alliance: Blade War XIII". We're sure you have your own game title cliche and we'd love to hear about it. The more trite, the better.

Ready, set, go!

Console War

In a very long and acidic rant, James Mielke over at  1up.com, proudly declares that he'd have bought two Wiis before he buys one PS3. Now before all of you fanboys go ballistic, he does raise several interesting points - some of which are positive points for each console.

Yes, he admits that the PS3 and the Xbox 360 are more powerful than the Wii. Both are bigger, meaner, and stocked with enough High Definition Display features to fry a photo-sensitive alien's brain.

Microsoft - on one side of the big console war - has done its best to play to its strengths. The company developed a huge and solid online community, and it have found ways to not only make its online services functional, but it has also made its content and gameplay relevant.

Sony, for its part has focused on the future. Its "huge box" is filled with things you think you don't really need right now, but five years down the line you can't live without. Its box has eight processors, Blu-ray, built-in online capabilities, 5.1 surround sound, high-definition, the kitchen sink, etc. All that, and Sony has all the games you want and have been waiting for. What made the PS2 dominant wasn't the console's power but its very broad library of titles. Anticipation for the next-gen version of those titles (Ridge Racer in Particular) is what's making him still hold true to the Sony Magic Box.

Will he buy a PS3 on launch though? He proudly says no. Why? Well, here's where the flame-bait-must-rant-about part comes in. He says that he's learned that Sony has this nasty habit of milking money from you because they tend to make their own stuff obsolete. He'll wait and see.
