Sega teases with Sonic, Aliens, Empire Total War, Alpha Protocol on Gamer's Day 08 - Image 1It looks like everyone's dishing out there own version of "Gamer's Day." Sega's own rendition, however, may be the one to stand out from the rest, since its multi-genre, multi-platform, and multi-franchise collection is studded with highly-anticipated hopefuls. So aside from Iron Man and upcoming game adaptation of The Incredible Hulk, Sega laid out teasers for fans of Aliens, Total War and the stealthy action title, Alpha Protocol.

Konami's Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest, one of the games to be featured in Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console - Image 1Go ahead and make fun of us, we don't care. We love our retro games and we're proud to say we've played them when they first came out on their respective consoles. The ESRB has recently given the go signal for several games that will be available in the soon to be released Virtual Console service for the Nintendo Wii.

A lot of old time gamers can now relive the glory days when they played these games on their NES or SNES. Some of these titles may seem familiar even to newer gamers since they've seen recent action on the new generation platforms (i.e. Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania). Either way it's still good clean fun for everyone once the service becomes available on the Wii.

Here's the ok'd list that we have so far and expect for it to get even longer as the service always has something new to offer gamers, young and old, alike:
  • Alien Storm
  • Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest
  • Crack Down
  • ESWAT: City Under Siege
  • Golden Axe III
  • Impossible Mission (WiiWare download?)
  • Ninja Gaiden 2: The Dark Sword of Chaos
  • Pilotwings
  • Pro Wrestling
  • Super Turrican
  • Super Turrican II
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game
  • Vectorman
  • Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Wii Virtual Console - Image 1We know that there's lots of people excited about the advent of NeoGeo fighting games in Nintendo's Virtual Console (but no King of Fighters? Aww), but we'd also like to inform you that old-school arcade fighting games aren't  the only new entries in the menu for this month.

Also included in this month's new selection of downloadable games for the Virtual Console are the following:

NES (or Famicom in Japan)
  • Battle City
  • Mach Rider
  • Bases Loaded
  • The Tower of Druaga
Super NES (Super Famicom):
  • Super Metroid
  • Gradius III
Mega Drive:
  • Atomic Runner
  • Golden Axe III
  • Super Thunder Blade
  • Land Stalker
PC Engine:
  • Legend of Hero Tonma
  • Detana!! Twinbee
  • Guyframe
  • Override
  • Salamander
Nice, eh? Now, there's just one catch: these selections are set to be released in Japan only for the meantime. Let's just hope that Nintendo will consider giving Wii fans in other regions all across the world a taste of this wonderful smorgasbord of gaming.

Golden Axe III - Image 1Those who've played Golden Axe II on the Virtual Console can now rejoice: its sequel, Golden Axe III, has already been rated and will be included in the Virtual Console's classic gaming library later this year. Golden Axe III was only released originally in Asia for the Sega Mega Drive, but it will make its Western debut via the Nintendo Wii's VC, assuming that it's going to have an English translation for U.S., Europe, and Australia's Virtual Console.

Other Sega Mega Drive games, such as the beat-em-up Streets of Rage 3 and arcade-style shooter Super Thunder Blade have also been rated for use in the Virtual Console as well, promising bucketloads of more sentimental fun through Wii's downloadable game service.

The release dates of these Sega games haven't been announced yet, but do stay tuned for more updates!

Still wondering if the new North America Virtual Console (VC) releases for the Wii console are worth the points? These two videos we've posted here should confirm that bit of speculation, as they'll be previewing two of the three titles that have just gone online on VC: Golden Axe II, and Lode Runner.

The first video we've posted will be for Golden Axe II, and will feature gameplay as demonstrated by Axe-Battler, along with hordes of opponents ready to kick axe. The second video's for Lode Runner, and demonstrates what looks like a player's who's been practicing - those are some pretty smooth moves. We won't delay you guys any further - enjoy the videos, and have your Wii Points ready if you decide to take a swing at these games.

The Lode Runner video is available in the Full Article.

Golden Axe II - Image 1Nintendo has announced more classic games headed for the Wii's Virtual Console. As with every VC update for North America, these three new VC titles will go live today at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time.

First up is Lode Runner. This NES classic is for one to two players and is worth 500 Wii Points. Players take control of the hero (known as "Runner"), collecting gold nuggets and avoiding capture by enemy robots in every increasingly-challenging stage. Lode Runner for the VC also includes an Edit Mode so players can design and play their own stages in the game.

Next up is Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Originally released for the Sega Genesis, this game marks the first appearance of a certain two-tailed fox named Miles "Tails" Prower. Together they must find the Chaos Emeralds before Dr. Eggman (or Robotnik, take your pick) does in order to stop his evil machinations. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is for one to two players and can be downloaded for 800 Wii Points.

Finally, we get Golden Axe II. This Sega Genesis title is for one to two players and is also worth 800 Wii Points. Death Adder may be gone, but Dark Guld has taken his place as the game's main bad guy. It's up to Ax-Battler, Tyris-Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead to hack and slash their way through six levels, reclaim the Golden Axe, and give Dark Guld a whacking.

Keep checking back here for more Virtual Console updates.

Wii - Image 1Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC) has added seven more titles to its list of rated games for the Nintendo Wii's Australian Virtual Console service. All of the new titles are old Sega Mega Drive classics.

Here's the list of newly-added titles:
The inclusion of Shining Force should please a lot of RPG fanatics, and the whole list's a pretty solid lineup, if we do say so ourselves. Release details for these games have yet to be announced, but they should all show up on the Wii Shop Channel within a few weeks. Check back here on QJ for more updates.

Sega Mega Drive

This is fun. We reported yesterday that to stop endless speculations, Nintendo UK released a list of VC titles with a breakdown of how many will appear on each specific system. This time, Sega of America announced that 10 new titles are actually available for download now. If that isn't enough to make you smile, well, we don't know anymore what will.

Anyway, most of these titles originally came out during the early 90's with a couple of them dating back to the late 80's. And so we will be including a brief description of each title to help you remember them. Prices to download the Sega titles begin at 800 Wii points.

Titles Currently Available:
  • Sonic The Hedgehog: Rocket Sonic, the fastest blue hedgehog on earth, through hair-raising loop-de-loops and dizzying dives past bubbling lava, waterfalls and on as you gather up rings and stop Dr. "Ivo" Robotnik's schemes for world domination!
  • Altered Beast: When Greek god Zeus brings you back to life, you set forth on a mission to rescue his daughter Athena from the underworld. Along the way, collect the Spirit Balls dropped by enemies to increase your strength and transform into a variety of mythical creatures with powerful attacks.
  • Golden Axe: Three mighty heroes have a score to settle with the evil Death Adder. As a powerful fighter, a female amazon, or a mighty dwarf, you'll fight through Adder's henchmen with weapons and magic attacks or ride the fearsome, fire-breathing beasts to help in you combat.
  • Columns: Test your hand at the ancient Phoenician game of Columns. Multi-colored gems drop from the top of the screen into a pit and it is up to you to quickly arrange the order of the jewels as they fall into lines of three or more. If your gems pile up and reach the top, the game is over.
  • Ecco the Dolphin: Help Ecco the Dolphin find his missing friends by exploring his vast ocean world. You must surface for air and keep an eye out for enemies as you search the depths. Ecco's unique sonar ability will give you helpful information from other sea creatures.
See the rest after the jump!
