On Shelves This Week: May 4 to May 10, 2008 - Image 1If last week's on-shelves superstar is Niko Bellic from Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3), today we have Steven Spielberg, the Academy Award-winning director of ET, Jaws and Jurassic Park. No, we won't be playing the director in a video game. Rather, we can now get a feel of his brainchild puzzle video game, Boom Blox. See what other game titles will be released this week over at the full article.

Dog lovers rejoice! (Who can resist those big puppy eyes?) Here are more The Dog Island gameplay videos and trailers.

The cute dogs of this island are simply too cuddly (the trailers may make you go "Awww..." every five seconds). Yuke's Media Creations and Ubisoft have teamed up to bring this title to North America on May 1, while the release in Japan is just a few winks away (April 26). In the trailers, we see the adventures of the brown puppy who sets out on an adventure to save his sick brother by finding a special flower.

The Dog Island (for the Wii and PS2) videos also feature a gang of bully dogs, a black 2D creature that paces back and forth, a mine cart ride reminiscent of 101 Dalmatians, and a music video. We'll leave you to check them all out while we try to figure out how this is going to be played. Enjoy!

The Dog Island - Image 1The Dog Island is going to be released in Japan for the Nintendo Wii and the PlayStation 2 (PS2) this coming April 26, but all of us here still haven't the vaguest idea as to how all of these will play out. What we just know is that players play as a dog who has a brother that got sick.

To be able to restore this brother back to his full health, your character should travel to Dog Island and search for a wild flower. It's pretty heart-melting, we know. And what about those cute droopy-eyed big dog faces? We're pretty sure that would melt your hearts as well.

But you know the best part about all these? Our sources say that there's a big possibility that the video game will come to North America during Q2 of 2007, courtesy of Ubisoft. The publisher is yet to officially announce this, but for the meantime, we'd like you to enjoy the video trailer for The Dog Island we found over at the official site (and reminder84 uploaded it to YouTube).

It's in Japanese though but we're telling you, you don't need words to feel for these dogs. The Wii version of the game will be priced for 6,120 Yen (US$ 51.96).

In the previous article, we all got a screenshot with tons of speculations on how this Dog Island will go. Inspired by the Japanese "The Dog" calendars, this game has brought these large nosed puppies to life. The "Dog Calendars" are known for featuring puppies with emphasized faces and noses, making them undeniably cute. Of course, it's just a camera trick. But it's practically the best camera trick yet, as it has spawned tons of merchandise, a fan club, and even their own line of stuffed toys. Now, Nintendo is cashing on these cute little dogs to swoon our hearts once more.

If you expect this game to be a little like Nintendogs, well, just get a DS and play Nintendogs there as this is not like those pet rearing games. In fact, the game is an adventure wherein you play a dog whose brother got sick and you need to find a legendary flower at the Dog Island. Yes, the story is like Balko and friends all over again, but this time with a much cuter packaging and 3D game render.

We hear that there will also be dog fights, long walks, and some nap time involved. The concept of the game is quite interesting, although at the moment we're at a loss on how this game will make use of the wiimote. Oh well, with cute doggie faces that could make you squee for eternity, who has time to think about the wiimote’s capability?

That right there is one big-headed dog. Weird, but cute... in a weird way. And those puppy-dog eyes! Ok, we're no vets, but we think that this little doggy's suffering from droopy-eyed syndrome. Which reminds us - it kinda looks like that old cartoon dog Droopy, doesn't it? Well, except for the fact that it's brown.

Anyway, this screenshot is from The Dog Island, an upcoming Wii game about, presumably, dogs. Oh interesting fact: there really is a dog island. We forget where it is, but it's made up of smaller islands and each island is home to a different kind of dog. For example, there's a tiny dog island that's exclusive to chihuahuas and stuff. What do they do there? No idea. Drink martinis and play poker maybe, or try to find out which of them are left-handed and which are right-handed.
