yaroze - Image 1After 12 years, Sony is about to pull the plug on its Yaroze program, which made console development available to aspiring non-professionals. Through this service, subscribers received access to an online community, development software, as well as a very rare black PlayStation One console that allowed devs to run their own code on the system.

But all is not lost. "We plan to make a copy of the site available for our original members," said SCEE's Paul Holman, adding that a get-together of sorts will be held for the development community.

The Net Yaroze project will effectively be canceled in July at a still unspecified date. At any rate, that black PSOne makes a very, very good souvenir.

They could also try Wiibrewing if they want console homebrew:

 » THEY SHOULD!!!!!

They should make it for psp, or at least let people develop games for the psp.

If they want to compete with the Iphone, Ipod touch, they should have an app store that lets people upload games that they have made themselves.

PSP CFW has inspired me to program and i hope that if they ever do do this they would make the psp even better and they'd make more money, because the iphone only has apps and simple games, but the psp has proper controls for good portable gaming and UMD's/Download eboot.pbp .

But if they had an appstore to host people's games more people would buy the psp than the iphone... well that's my opinion at least.

thats why there's homebrew dood.

If they OFFICIALLY let ppl make games, make a bit of money off em, and gave us a decent SDK to work with, psp will do great. Homebrew is good but 99 percent of the time it kinda sucks. Why? Because the guys who make it have no income from it. It's at the bottom of their priority list. Also, all tools available are hacker-made ones--not always the best.

 » same here...

lol... first time i've heard this one too.
i guess most developers knows about yaroze.
i hope they'll make this one open source soon. xD
or at least make it available to the public.

@SolidSnake117
i bet they will soon once the psp go is release.
i don't think renting the psp sdk would be good on their side since it's very expensive. lol. so my best bet is that they will try and become like the itunes app store or something. xD

 » wow,

I thought this program was cut ages ago. Guess not. Kinda sad, the PS1 was a great system, even for today.

 » That takes me back...

crikey, i forgot all about the Net Yaroze. back in the day the Official Playstation Magazine used to drop a few of the games developed on it on the cover discs, some of the games were actually really good. one of which was Blitter Boy, think the author of that beast got a job at codemasters.
i still have them discs somewhere, might have to hunt them down for a bit of nostalgia.

Or you can find them and convert them to .pbp's so the rest of us can experience these Yaroze games.

Time Slip was a great game too(the one with the snail).

Note. If anyone was planning on converting these into PSP games(PS1 EMU) you'd also have to do the PAL to NTSC conversion thing.

 » ???

I never knew that the Net Yaroze has been available this entire time. I thought it was like a one time only thing 12 years ago.

If I'd have known, I would've gotten one!

 » DEV'ING FOR PS1

If anyone is interested in developing for PS1 this page has links to the Yaroze DEVKIT. I think it also includes other kits for PS1 like bladelib.

Great man! Thanks for sharing :D

Note. You'll need more than just the PS1 Devkit to make PS1 apps. Items required: PS1 capable of running burnt games, PS1 serial cable (you can even make your own one of these), C+ programming knowledge, patience and luck.
