Tsk tsk tskWe know, we've already reported on some of the hazards of playing games with the Wiimote. The most common of them all is that flying controller, wherein the worst case scenario is that it'll land on your TV screen. It's happened not but once, and our advice back then was to use the Wiimote's strap.

Unfortunately, that advice in itself may prove to be but a folly, as well. Over at Kotaku, a rather distressed writer posted his story regarding the Wiimote's faulty strap. Apparently, while kids were playing baseball with Wii Sports, the strap suddenly snapped apart from the controller, thus sending the latter hurling across to the wall.

"Fortunately, the airborne remote slapped into a wall and not my US$ 3,000 plasma screen," says the guy. Whew. What a relief that sure must be for him.

Anyways, there. While we won't tell you to stop enjoying the Wiimote, and of course the Wii, we will, however, tell you to be ever vigilant with,er, the straps. Unless you can find a better way of strapping it onto your wrist, you better make sure you get a good grip on the thing. Use the gloves, or something.

 » dont let go

dont blame it on the wrist strap. blame it on the idiots who let go of the remote.

 » how much force

(with a person not holding onto the remote) does it take to snap it.

I think you'd notice wear before it got anywhere near snapping.

What's the point of the strap if NOT to prevent the controller from flying when one ACCIDENTALLY lets go of the remote (i.e. it slips)? The strap currently gives a false sense of security, much like wearing a seat belt made of tissue paper in an SUV. The strap will break if the remote slips; its point is to prevent the controller from flying across the room. The strap does NOT fit its intended purpose, hands down.

» I can finally speak up!

I've finally gotten my Wii and I think the stories about wrist straps breaking are just people being stupid and careless. First of all, read the instruction book. There is no need to swing so hard on any game that would make it fly out of your hand. I threw a 98 miles an hour fastball and just used a wrist flip.

Bottom line, broken Wriststraps = Wiidiots

an inciddent caused by kids enough said. my nephew tosses this thing around even when not in play and not the way it should, the games have warnings and they tell u how to hold the controller and how to lightly swing the wiimote. qj keeps making it sound like its some sort of defect when its really just people that dont know how to read and use things. the strap isnt a security device so stop counting on it to keep your controller in hand its there for a light grip loss not to prevent the wiimote from flying around since the wiimote wasnt meant to be swished around frantically at high speeds. how about enough with the wii casualties and on to serious news

As with what has been said above. The force needed to cause these huge cracks in screens that people are posting make it obvious they are putting may more force behind the motion then what is needed. If you are going to swing that sucker around like paul bunyen you need to be prepared to handle the consequences.

That's not true, it doesn't take much to crack a plasma or LCD screen.

Yeah, because if you sneeze on them they crack? They aren't that fragile. You need to give them a decent enough knock to crack them and the size of the cracks that people are showing needed better then a wrist flick or normal arm swing.

If people are swinging so hard the controller slips out of their hand, breaks the string, and causes a crack two times the size of a fist you are swing too hard. Either get a grip or chill out. Stop blaming other factors.

» Nitendo should stop marketing the Wii this way

Nintendo should be partly to blame. The way they marketed the Wii was to show people playing with such exaggerated motions, not little wrist flicks. Just look at some Wii commercials.

nintendo doesnt market insane movement and exagerated force of the wiimote, their commercial show u more "posing" then moving ppl should A- supervize their kids and B-learn to use things the way they are meant to be used. if your wiimote slips out of your hand and u crack your lcd, then u dont disserve neither a wii or a hdtv.

If you take a look at the commercials here, I can see potential accidents happening from some of the swinging or boxing movements in some of the games. They certainly aren't using "wrist flicks" for games such as baseball, or tennis, or boxing.

I actually have a bunch of coworkers who are moms complaining about this on the Wii actually, several moms have had their kids break the wrist strap already, this is quite a common problem for people who want to play games like they do in the commercials.

 » Videos

I've seen videos on Youtube about people that breaks the strap or throw the remote.

1st they all take the Wiimote as if it were their *****, and 2nd, they really swing with all the strenght they have. I would be more worried about physical injuries than the remote, at that strengh, even a real baseball pitcher would get hurt.

   by Just_a_guy (Unregistered) - 2006-11-27
 » what were they doing?

In order to do this they had to have let go of the Wiimote quite often!

 » oh boy

I can just see it now. Somebody will sue nintendo for bodily harm. i can just see somebody swinging the remote in baseball and nailing someone in the face with it.

dude i have a wii and the wiimotes wrist strap has a thick string its not even that threadish............ mi wrist strap is connected with at least 1/4 an inch wide string

   by sakura (Unregistered) - 2006-11-27
 » something else to notice

if you guys notice on all the pics with the wii strap broken all the strings are broken symetrically at the half point of each strap, now correct me if im wrong but the string wraps around the hole, so if the plastic was to even cut the straps string it would end up with one shorter side then the other, those look like they where cut with a knife of scicssor straight up while held in half. try it out yourself look at the straps on the wiimote and cut a line straight across where the rubbing would between the plastic and string would cut, and youll end up with more than just 2 strinks evenly sized. you get 1 longer then the other and a little extra piece of string from the wrap.

 » Broken Wii strap

Yo, it also happened to me alright? i guess swinging hard gets me and my friends into the mood, and my friend broke my wii strap and sent the mote flying, but it the controller is durable and still works. It sucks when u use little movements and it's funner if u try big movements, i guess it's all in personal opinion, but we like to play in big movement, were not idiots u jack asses

I am an attorney who is investigating whether the strap on the controller is defective. If you've had a strap break, please let me know about your experience at http://www.protectingtheconsumer.com/potential-legal-issues.php

 » Broken StrapS

Amazing that I have several expensive cameras on wrist straps that I have owned for several YEARS and they get a LOT of abuse from hanging and swinging heavy cameras and have YET to break. Yet after the first day one of our four Wii straps broke, followed by two more just days later. Now these were not flung or thrown. The most that can be said for any stress on the strap was that when we take a break from our turn, the remote dangles from our wrist. It would be a pain to constantly take it off and on and lay it down. Dangling is not abusing or throwing the remote. This strap is definately flawed.
