The Good Design Award is an annual comprehensive design evaluation and commendation program by Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry. It should be remembered that one of last year's awardees was actually Microsoft's Xbox 360 console. Unlike previous consoles, the Wii succeeds in offering an intuitive playing style accessible to players of all ages, abilities, and interests, and in this way, the game console has evolved to a communication tool, with physical gaming as the medium. Obviously, these are virtual games, but it is significant that the developers bring interactive design to life in ways that are not too complex. It is setting a standard as a new online virtual society. What's more, values and attitudes of the online community are emerging here, as residents who create 3D content of all kinds using the original development tools retain the copyrights for their creations. A virtual society linked to the real world by its currency, Second Life holds great potential for further growth. |
