PlayStation 3 browser and Wii Opera - Image 1

With the release version of Opera for the Wii out, Games-Digest wanted to do a side-by-side between that and the PS3's built-in web browser. The short version of their findings is that when it comes to surfing the Web 2.0 hallmarks, the Wii does have a slight edge compared to the PS3 in some cases (it is Opera, after all), but things can, after all, change with an update.

The more concrete results:
  • Games-Digest found that Google Maps and Bloglines, for example, "didn't work at all on the PS3 browser." On the other hand, a comment to that article charged that is is possible to do Bloglines ("hold down the X button on a news link and the RSS feed will open in a new window").
  • The PS3 browser does have some issues formatting certain sites, or that browsing on some sites is less smooth or incomplete (e.g., Digg, Last.fm, MySpace). Both browsers also have browsing hitches with other certain sites (del.icio.us and Vox being examples, as well as Gmail).
  • The PS3 seems to hold the advantage in uploading photos "and (possibly) video" vs. the Wii (Flickr).
  • Both browsers performed equally well on other sites (Twitter, YouTube, eBay and Amazon).
The survey's writer also mentioned that the sites themselves could be redesigned in the future to have PS3 or Wii-specific mirrors that the browser will be redirected to. It is also quite possible, from where we sit, that firmware updates to either console could improve the browsing experience on either with a few tweaks and updates.

Besides, this is just one comparison. People will need repeated tests to get definite results.

at least the ps3 browser is free with the console (the wii's will be free until June)

My PC browser (Firefox) was free too. It blows away any of these sh*tty console browsers. If the XBOX 360 had a browser, I'd probably never use it.

wii version sucks, including no dvd wii player. i would not pay for internet, wii. i can put an OS in PS3 than the wii doesn't do. Linux on ps3 is something new to have plus u would be able to play a few really good games like doom 3 or unreal, etc.Firefox is the way to go. than opera or explorer

Wll i know the wii browser is definatly worth the price plus... * looks at wii and ps3 console prices*. .. I can see why sony can afford t o skip a few dollars.

» That was a stupid comment.

What you should see from the price of the two consoles is that with the wii you are paying for an original xbox with a motion sensing controller. You actually overpay at $250, so Nintendo should be giving away their browser also. Nintendo actually makes a profit off of every wii sold, Sony takes a loss. Besides you could put linux on your ps3 (that's free, not just at first but always) and use firefox.

 » Re: Datnizzle

And who's fault is it that Sony's losing money? The reason they have to price it that low is because their sales would be ever worse than they are now on the PS3 if they made any kind of reasonable profit off that thing.

Oh noes! Nintendo is making money off their system! What jerks! Now what kind of thinking is that? Excuse me, but I believe we live in a capitalistic country here. The whole point of making ANYTHING is to make a profit. If it weren't, then why do it to begin with?

And besides, Nintendo IS giving the browser away, just for a limited time. The point? DOWNLOAD IT NOW, if you want it!

And who's really gonna sit around using their PS3 or Wii as their main internet browsing machine? Seriously? Of course Mozilla/Firefox is the way to go, but don't compare console browsers to PC ones when their purposes are slightly different (quick/convenient vs. everything else).

Sony isn't taking a fall with the price of it *****tarts. If Sony lost money for every PS3 made due to its "low" price than Sony wouldn't keep the price at whatever it is at now. As for the DVD player...I have...5 DVD players at my house, I think I can manage.

Re: smarter than (Unregistered) - 2007-04-18
 » you are dumb

You are really ignorant, Sony LOSES money for every PS3 sold!!!! the price of the components in the PS3 exceeds the price of the PS3 itself. duh, look it up.

   Re: ... (Unregistered) - 2007-04-18
 » That's embarrassing

You try to act smart but you're wrong. Sony's intention is to make the loss back on games licensing.

Idiot.

Re: another guy (Unregistered) - 2007-04-23
 » @ ...

to make a ps3 it costs around $838
they sell it for $600
238$ dollars of debt or loss on each console that means sony need money back on games, well How many games do they need to sell to come even on production costs to make and publish the game around 20mil-10mil then they need a overall profit so how much profit of each game do they get maybe $10 dollars for the licence so umm to make a profit everyone with a ps3 must buy 20 games+ and they%u2019ll cut even, and after a few years they will get profits

have both consoles wii doesnt any mpegs ps3 does although it has to download them first

» please, think right before you write.

As far as I'm concerned wii is not like the original xbox with a wiimote, but like the gamecube with a bit more RAM. I know the original xbox is still more powerful than wii.
Concerning Sony's market strategy, this is not new:
they used the same strategy for ps2 and it really worked, no matter if they're losing money by now they'll be selling more consoles. Besides quantity is always a decisive factor when it comes to total amount of money received.

» Firefox for PS3 and Wii

Why don't they just port Firefox to PS3 and Wii and then you're a good as gold. However, YDL5.0 still pretty much sucks at this point and it's too much trouble to boot into even after it's loaded imo.

 » Fire*****.

Fire***** is essentially opera, but slower, and with less protection from viruses and popups. Sure, it has stupid little addons, but it really doesn't offer anything more.

The PS3 is 600 dollars. That's ridiculous.

 » Stupid

The price you are talking about is not losing money, when you compare the production cost to price, you are looking at the market value, no company would not be stupid enough to sell something that costs more to make than to sell.
