Randy Orton wants more violence in Videogames - Image 1It looks like the videogame industry has a new defender in its midst, except he's not exactly the type of person you'd expect to be promoting the videogame industry. How come? Well, he's the so-called Legend Killer of wrestling, and he wants to see even more violence in games.

That's right: the WWE's Randy Orton took a stand for more violence in videogames, arguing that videogames were the least of parents' worries. Said Orton at a recent London promotion for THQ's WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Wii, DS), "Violence sells. I want to see more violence in games - the more blood the better."

Orton cited the movie Goodfellas as proof that movie violence, by comparison, could be more shocking than the violence found in a videogame. "The violence [in Goodfellas] is against human beings. There's rape in movies - you see all kinds of f***ed up s*** on film," noted the WWE superstar.

While his enthusiasm for the videogame industry is nice, we doubt that Orton sees videogames as an artform. If videogames are to become an emerging medium, however, we suppose you'd have to accept both the highbrow forms of artistry and storytelling in videogaming and the occasional bouts of virtual recreational violence.

Like it or not, Professional Wrestling is a form of violent entertainment. This guy knows exactly what he's talking about.

Like video games, processional wrestling has had its share of blame for influencing the actions of children.

Video games, movies, TV, music... all of these are or have been blamed for corrupting children. That's why various ratings systems exist.

Randy Orton may not be the spokes person you want, but if we're ever going to get past the "games are for children" mentality we need him and other public figures to take a stand.

yeah? good. controversy sells. there will always be violent video games. . know why? because people love them, and you cant outlaw them in a free country. . . and if they do become outlawed, people will still make them. they'll be even better then.

dont diss steroids. that one guy who was trafficking steroids to the brainless NFL gorillas was drugged with the steroids until he lost his mind, so he shot his girlfriend. at which point, after he came down he shot himself because of what he did. and all that because he was testifying against NFL apes for their steroid misuse.
not to mention the same thing happened to another great sports entertainer, Eddie Gurrerro. (spelling).

Not only that but did you hear about chris beniot. He killed his WHOLE FAMLILY and then himself. I dont doubt it was the roid-rage that did it. I was getting ready to post this same comment. Roids are messed up and its sad how low some things have gotten because of them. Look at baseball for instance. "America's Pass-Time" the call. Almost every baseball playing celebrity roids. Kid look up to those dudes too.

 » I agree.

I love violent, brutal games, and I don't have a tendency to murder anyone.

We need more God Of War, Manhunt 3, MK Shaolin Monks 2 and so on and so forth.

Come to think of it, almost all mature violent games are high ranked in review sites.

   Re: Torch - 2008-08-09
 » .

Take a high quality game like Call Of Duty 4.

Imagine how much cooler it would be if when you shot someone in the head, the top of their skull would blow off, and when the body hits the ground the gray matter should flow out like from a toppled over soup bowl.

nVidia Physx could make the leakage calculations much more realistic.

And if you took a shotgun to the head, it should be like Manhunt 2 -- The entire head gets blown away into pulp, and chunks of brain splatter on the wall behind and slide down slowly.

   Re: dazmo - 2008-08-10
 » dude. . .

brains are not liquid. they do not spill like soup, they are solid organs. they should kinda flop out a litle still atatched to the spine near the back, that would rule. then some nice pristine looking blood.
point is. . . make it real enough, and no one will care.

   Re: Torch - 2008-08-10
 » I know

but the soup bowl would be cooler. Plus the body should twitch sporadically on the ground.

» so what you guys are saying..

Is that any game with lots of violence sucks, and it's the kids' fault that their idiot parents buy the M rated games for them? Huh? That's what you guys are obviously hinting towards, right? The media needs to shut the ***** up because they don't even play games, they just look at 15 seconds of a CGI trailer and automatically come to conclusions on the entire game.

If some 8 year old kid comes on a game, I'll curse him out and tell him about pot. He has no business on the game to begin with and his idiot father doesn't need to jump down my throat because he's letting his son play these *****ed up games like we do.

And Orton will get his wish with that new game coming - called Splatterhouse.

He's right. I would like more violent video games. I think video games are art, and I'm anti-war. Neither fact has anything to do with the fact that I like violent games. That's one of the reasons I like the WWE games, you can set a barb-wire bat on fire and beat someone with it. Pretty funny, also something I would not try in real life.
To the first 3 posters, why do you care if he likes violent video games. It's his choice. Maybe he thinks parents should worry about their kids having kids, doing drugs, or shooting up a real school.
To Naroon I somewhat agree, it's retarded when some 12 year old kid tells me to watch my language while playing an "M" rated game. You know what my response is, "what do you think the phrase "Game experience may change on-line." means.

 » ????

Listen Lame, I never said violence was the ONLY reason I buy a game. But it adds to the fun. Besides have you seen No Country For Old Men? Pretty violent movie, also earned an Oscar for Best Pic. Violence in movies is cool because old people grew up with the movies, they're not scared of the movies. But when they see kids fixated on a video game, something most find impossible to play, they don't get the appeal. And if the X-Men taught you any thing it's, "People fear what they don't understand."
Ya feel me!

   Re: Xastabus - 2008-08-14
 » Datnizzle

I think you've hit the nail on the head in your reply. Possibly the main reason this is such a big deal is because we have lots of stuffy old people who don't understand video games as an entertainment medium and can't relate how playing something like GTA is any different than watching a movie about the mob.

Like I said before, video games aren't the only form of entertainment in history to receive this exact same treatment. Not too long ago, heavy metal music was being targeted as trying to convert kids to Satanism, which is laughable when you think about a bunch of busybodies sitting around playing songs backward trying to decipher the hidden Satanic messages.

In 20 to 40 years we will either have crushed video games under the oppressive heel of censorship, or come to accept it as the art form that it is. Either way, something new will come along to take the controversial spotlight and we'll be having these exact same arguments all over again.

I admit violence is cool in games, but crap, Video games already has a bad reputation as it is, and us gamers see nothing wrong with it but to other people(Jack Thompson and his people) see everything wrong in them. Having a wrestler saying "More violence to video games" sends a bad message to those people who clearly hate games and violent tv......and its alot.

Amen Brother! It's sad that ALOT of the parents out there are too busy trying to be their child's "FRIEND" and not their parent. For those under age kids playing the M-rated games that their parents purchased for them out of pure ignorance... Don't Blame the Medium, it's about time the the adults finally TAKE RESPONSIBILITY.

Oh well, it's kinda nice (after a fashion) to know that the "anti-violence" side isn't the only one to have idiots defending it (i.e. Jack Thompson, *coughHillaryClintoncough*).

I am VERY against extreme amounts of violence in videogames, but I don't think we should trample the constitution to stop it. I DO think it would be nice to have edited versions of games released for the people that don't want sex and gore throughout their playing experience, but it should be up to the publisher/developer.

Anyway, a lot of the comments in this article give me a lot more hope for humanity.

   Re: Soupman - 2008-08-09
 » uh..

thats a good idea but just because theres an edited version of a violent gorey game doesnt mean people would buy it instead of the unedited for their kids and themselves.

for someone who claims hillary clinton is an idiot, you certainly sound like a democrat.
so get this. . . IT IS THE PARENTS FAULT FOR "BUYING VIOLENT GAMES FOR THEIR CHILDREN - THERE IS A RATING SYSTEM - YOU DONT HAVE TO EVEN BE LITERATE TO UNDERSTAND THE RATING SYSTEM.
And randy ortons not an idiot. just cause hes a celebrity whos got an honest opinion doesnt make him an idiot. if your buddy from around the way said to you how much he likes violent games you wouldnt think a thing of it. but hes a celebrity so hes supposed to act like one right? lol. guess we all need role models.

   Re: dazmo - 2008-08-11
 » uuuuuhhhhhh

i dont wanna hate or anything but. . . you DO know that wrestling is all an act, right? the whole championship reign thing. . . all scripted. its like a soap opera. real wrestling matches, even the kind with "pro wrestling rules" thrown in, can take hours and hours. in fact, i remember an episode of raw a few years back when benoit and HHH had something of a real wrestling match, it took the whole episode(1.5 hours +) and they still had to dramatize it and add theatrics. (real wrestling is boring to watch).
Dont get me wrong i like pro wrestling as much as the next guy, its better than a lot of the crap on t.v. but for real, if you didnt know world wrestling enterainment IS JUST entertainment then maybe you shouldnt be playing video games. . . kinda scary . . .(dont ever rag on a pro wrestler about being an actor, they will slap the flying snot out of you. ive seen it, haha!)
