Thanks to the efforts of the Wiibrew community, DVD playback is now
possible on the Wii (albeit it has to be modded), which brings us back
to the question, why wasn't it already possible in the first place?Well, it was. Nintendo just disabled it. A discussion among the members of Team Twiizers touches briefly on the issue. They relate how they found that the Wii did have DVD playback functionality - only, it was disabled. Thinking it was an unintentional oversight on Nintendo's part, they tried to warn them of the issue. Nintendo, however, "didn't respond kindly to their attempts at communication." Not that it's any surprise to find that the Wii had DVD playback all along, but it does bring to the surface a question that you probably asked yourself at one point or another: why did Nintendo keep going on about releasing a "DVD Wii" model (this was a long time ago), if the Wii was already capable of DVD in the first place? sony kinda learned their lesson w/the psp. nintendo has, or had, much more respect in the gaming commynity and didnt need to worry as much about piracy on a next gen. the cube was hackable, but it wasn't as simple which made it pointless. who the f has the half size dvds to burn an iso onto (or a panasonic Q), and why pay the 1999 prices for the crap when you can get a solid game for just a little more and feel good about supporting nintendo. the wii is disappointing in the games dept and customers get pissed when they pay 30-50 bucks for the equivelant to a java/flash game. pissed customers = piracy that wasnt there before and no respect. gaming companies are getting too snooty and need to realize why they have money in the first place.

Nintendo probably planned to introduce the DVD capable version when sales leveled off, in order to get more sales. They're just greedy like that. Then they LIED about introducing a DVD capable version, and haven't done it yet.
Nobody needs Nintendo's empty promises as long as there's good homebrew that succeed where Nintendo FAILS.

they didnt need to offer the plus version when the wii started selling like hot cakes. i guess they would however, if it starts to sell bad. although, youre too stupid if you thought ANY company would be releasing upgraded machines if their product still sells well. oh wait, youre mister common sense, you are stupid indeed. doh.

The PS2 Slim offered support for CDRW+, even though the PS2 fat was still the best seller, so it's not unheard of.
Also, I think you'll find that Nintendo replaced the GB Advanced a number of times, and they're doing the same with the introduction with the iDS, even though the DS is hugely popular.
Doh.

sure, man. but each gba replacement too about 2 years (fair enough, it would be the time for a new wii then, although they have been releasing several side hardware). and to be honest, you cant say that sales were starting to drop for the ps2 or ds, and therefore sony/ninty released new versions of their consoles. anyway, i just meant they would do it if and only they think it will increase their sales, not just for the sake of it.

» Shopping Channel
I dont see why they would need to come out with a "DVD Version" of the wii at all. I can see them selling a DVD Player on the shopping channel, just like they did with the web browser. Then when you download/install it, the program simply activates DVD Playback on current systems.

I heard/read that if the Wii had DVD playback capabilities implemented, the import taxes would increase as the Wii would fall into a different bracket of entertainment hardware, therefore increasing the price.
Dunno if this is true. Not even sure if this applies to Jap, N.America, PAL or all of 'em. Just thought I'd mention it.
It's the same sort of idea as here in the UK, were property developers build and sell a "5 bedroom" house as a "4 bedroom house with Study". It just stops the tax man slapping on more taxes.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!
Not only that but in order to sell a DVD player you have to pay additional licensing fees.
Allowing the Wii to play DVDs does nothing but increase the cost. Which is exactly what they were trying to avoid.
In addition, HOLY CRAP this is old news!!!! It's already been determined that the DVD drive quality in the Wii was lowered to keep costs down and the unit can not withstand long term DVD playback.

Yes and Nintendo generously decided to pass the savings from not including a DVD player on to you....
Oh, they just kept the savings, the Wii is still a ripoff at $250.
Again, isoheavy is only concerned with Nintendo's profits. Does anyone else care how much money Nintendo is making?

» If you don't have a dvd player already, where were you the past 6 years?
I assume Nintendo disabled the DVD playback functions most likely during the development of them because they didn't think DVD playback is a major selling point in a console today.
Looking at the sales of the Wii lately, I'd think they were right. What's the point of spending time on something that everyone already has? If enough people wanted the feature later on, they could easily release a channel for it.

The PS3's BD is a great selling point since it's a new format. But DVD's been out for ages.

» hmm nintendo with its squeeky clean image,,
I seem to recall a time, when nintendo said, to get the wii to play dvd that it would need some sort of hardware that simply wasn't included in the standard wii. this rumor/lie poped up about the same time the rumors of the dvd enabled wii poped up.
How come sony can lie, and they are an evil faceless corperation.
Microsoft can lie. and they are the devil.
Yet nintendo can lie, and no one even blinks.
it's just not fair..

» The Wii wasn't in the final stages yet...
There's no proof of it being a lie. It could've been perfectly true that the Wii wasn't capable of DVD playback at that time. It wasn't a rumor either... Watch Nintendo's conference at E3 2005. That was long before the rumors of a DVD enabled Wii as well.

» With the DVD homebrew player
With the DVD homebrew player, they were proved wrong anyway. If it was an hardware issue, they couldn't have done it.

but then mine is sitting next my xbox1 which is sitting next to my ps2 which next to my ps3 and next to my dvdplayer... I even have a portable dvd player which is really not needed ...

But if Nintendo does a firmware update and turned on the dvd drive and player like a dvd channel that would be awsome! Then I would have to get component cables lol.

it was done in order to discourage pirates. Pirates always find a way, but if a drive won't read DVD-R/RW's, then it forces pirates to get creative and/or keeps casual pirates away.
