Game-to-film adaptations usually don't prove to be as popular as the video games they were based on, so what goes wrong when trying to put games into the silver screen? Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, shares his thoughts on what went wrong, using the film adaptation of his Super Mario Bros. as an example. We've got news of another successful video game that *might* be turned into a movie: Super Paper Mario. In a recent interview with Ignore Magazine, Seth Gordon (director of King of Kong) expressed some interest in making a movie adaptation of the popular Nintendo Wii game. When we hear talk of video games getting ported to the movies (or vice versa), we usually 1) run screaming from the room, 2) cower and hide, 3) hope for the best, or 4) all of the above. But we're talking about Seth Gordon here, he who can make critics put the words "documentary" and "hit" in the same sentence. Anyway, here's what he had to say: I'd love, really love, to adapt Super Paper Mario into a movie, a movie that would constantly switch from 2D to 3D. In five years, 3D cinema is going to be really big... (KoK) was screened for Nintendo, but I haven't had the chance to speak to anyone over there about it. But I definitely want to have that conversation. Arguably, Mario needs redeeming on the silver screen (as well as TV for that matter). What do you think? Will you go to a Super Paper Mario movie? |

Nintendo's European arm has confirmed the existence of the reported glitch in the PAL version of Super Paper Mario. As we reported earlier, the game-freezing glitch occurs when players confront Mimi inside Merlee's Mansion in Chapter 2-2. Those who own a copy of the game's PAL version can get their game discs replaced for free courtesy of Nintendo Europe. Players can also choose to go with either the language settings workaround we mentioned in our earlier report on the glitch or the following workaround from Nintendo Europe: At the start of Chapter 2-2, you will come across a character called Mimi. She will tell you to go to the farthest room on the first floor to meet a character called Merlee. Enter that room and press the green switch. A trap will be triggered, and a spiked ceiling will descend upon Mario. Before the ceiling reaches him, flip into 3D and jump on it to find a key. If you pick up the key, you won't run into any problems. Use it to open the locked door to Mimi's right. However, if you talk to Mimi without picking up the key, the game will freeze. You will then have to turn off your Wii console and start again from your last save point. Details about the replacement program will be announced soon on the official Nintendo Europe website. Things may not be all that dandy in Flipside as we once thought, as it seems that quite a few users are having issues with the PAL version of Mario's papery adventure for the Nintendo Wii. Thankfully, those of us crafty enough to experiment with Super Paper Mario's language settings of the game have found a quick remedy to the glitch. So what's the glitch, and where does it happen? Apparently, it manifests itself as a game freeze after you confront Mimi in Chapter 2-2, namely inside Merlee's Mansion. After she tells you to search the rooms for Merlee, and when you tell her that Merlee herself is nowhere to be found, the game stops dead in its tracks. What's worse is that it's not just an isolated bug, but a rather prevalent one, as many players have already reported of this happening. What's the workaround, then? Simple - change the system's language setting to German just before getting to Mimi. You'd be able to coast through the glitch without any problems, at which point you can save, power off, and set it back to its original language setting. Easy, isn't it? You can probably use this for any other similar glitch points in the game. While there is a way to go around the glitch, let's hope that Nintendo notices this and does something to resolve the issues - mayhap a patch, or even a new version of the game itself? Time will only tell, but we're banking on a patch itself. It'd be much easier for them to do so, what with the Wii's WiiConnect24 feature. |

Now we know U.S. players have finished Super Paper Mario for the umpteenth time, and could probably go over it again blindfolded just for kicks. But for Europe, Super Paper Mario has yet to make official landfall, so it's far from over. Fresh from Nintendo of Europe's (NoE) official site, they've announced an opportunity to spot some Super Paper Mario secrets at its official website, by attempting the following:

Based from the latest numbers published by trade journal Nihon Kogyo Shimbun, video game Super Paper Mario has sold a total of 1.25 million copies - 500,000 of which came from Japan alone. We believe that number has nowhere to go but up especially now that the title has been dated across Europe.
The press release sent in by Nintendo Europe revealed that Super Paper Mario will be shipped across the said continent on September 14. It will be priced for 35 GBP or roughly around US$ 71. It's a bit pricey compared to normal titles but hey, it's Mario and he has the ability to change your world from 2D to 3D. Aside from that, Super Paper Mario also offers other exciting features like unlockable characters including Princess Peach, Bowser and Luigi. This is rather important because each character has his/her own ability that will allow players to solve different puzzles and obstacles. It was reported earlier that Super Paper Mario will be released in Australia on September 20. |

If you've played Super Paper Mario on the Wii, then you'll probably attest to how awesome it is. Apparently, you're not alone, as a Japanese trade journal called Nihon Kogyo Shimbun has revealed that Nintendo has sold 1.25 million copies of the game. What's even more amazing is the fact that 500,000 of those sales are coming from Japan, and the PAL version hasn't been released yet. In retrospect, Super Paper Mario did get off to a great start, selling 350,000 copies in the month of April and has joined the top five best sellers on the NPD sales charts. With the impending release PAL release, it's pretty safe to say that the numbers will be climbing a little more. By how much, we can't say but we'll be sure to give you more on this as it happens. |

It took Nintendo quite some time before officially announcing video game Super Paper Mario for Australia. While the title has been dominating charts in other markets, fans from the Land Down Under still have to wait for a very vague September outing with Paper Mario. All anxieties are about to end now as Nintendo AU finally confirmed a concrete release date. Folks, Super Paper Mario will be available in Australia on September 20. While this is definitely good news, we have to say that the delay was rather unexpected and we're pretty sure fans are hoping something like this won't happen again in the future. For the uninitiated, Super Paper Mario features Nintendo's most famous plumber hero. The title combines platforming gameplay, RPG, and puzzle elements because of the whole 2D to 3D gig. There is still no word when it will arrive in Europe. |

A recent press wire for Nintendo's Australia chapter reveals several bits of good news, at the forefront of which is the Wii's latest sales numbers, and a confirmed release date for Super Paper Mario.Beginning with the first topic (skip to the last paragraph if you're after Paper Mario) Nintendo Australia was happy to report that their console had just hit the 100,000 mark, bringing it up to the title of the fastest selling console in the region. "We are pleased that Wii has achieved this benchmark, but we are ecstatic that it attained this whilst also reaching new audiences and expanding the scope of our entire industry," said Rose Lappin, Director of Sales and Marketing, regarding the sales. The Wii console was earlier reported to have hit the 8 million mark in worldwide sales. As for the news you've been waiting for - Nintendo Australia is letting the fans know that Super Paper Mario's Australian release is scheduled for this September, alongside Super Swing Golf PANGYA. Now, in case this date seems far off for the console owners, other games that are expected to land earlier are Resident Evil 4 on July 5, and Mario Party 8 on July 19. |
