Street Fighter: the Legend of Chun-Li - Image 1

The Far Side moment: "What am I thinking, I can't do martial arts," she thought

20th Century Fox failed to cash in on the love of gamers for Street Fighter IV (PS3, 360). The Legend of Chun-Li movie struck an overwhelming disappointment with moviegoers this weekend.

How bad? Let's just say that three of Uwe Boll's movies beat its opening gross. And that's without adjustments for inflation. Even the original Van Damme Street Fighter movie beat it. The Legend of Chun-Li grossed US$ 4.65 million for its opening weekend. Not a total bust of course, but come on. I at least hoped that Kristin Kreuk would pull in the fanboys.

In case you were wondering, the three Uwe Boll movies are "In the Name of the King," "Alone in the Dark," and "House of the Dead."

Now. Will anyone care to wager how Dragonball: Evolution will go?

Don't worry Chun-Li, we still love you:

 » better than van damme...

twas a better movie, but a better movie does not guarantee more money.

it would probably do a lot better on dvd/bluray.

i thought it was a nice start for a saga, but with popularity like this it might be a stretch to get investors for a follow up.

I never really saw it advertised. The last Street Fighter was horrible and still in the back of peoples mind. The title itself sounds cheesy. The only good move they made was to release it when SFIV came out.

I had absolutely no idea this movie even existed....

 » Not surprising it flopped

I have not seen a single ad at the cinema for this. Let alone anything on TV. Those three movies you quoted had quite reasonable advertising campaigns, WTF is going on with cinema advertising lately. Do they think the internet is enough these days, I only see like mega block busters advertised, eg James Bond.

YOU CAN'T MAKE CRAP AND EXPECT PEOPLE TO BUY INTO IT!

PS - Raul Julia was THE ONLY M.BISON!

 » Yeah...

Not to mention that chick is not chun-li to me....not sure which actress they could have used...but they need to be more asian, and be willing to undergo a 6 month upper leg strengthening routine...

 » It's out?

wow, I didn't even realize it was out yet....I think they can chalk up some of that to poor advertising. Still, I probably will go see it sometime just for kicks and of course for Kristen :)

 » DB: E

I thought this SF movie may actually do alright. I have ZERO hope for the Dragonball Evolution movie though. Can a movie do less than a million opening weekend? We may just find out.

by Mister Common Sense - 2009-03-04
 » .

The street fighter story is crappy to begin with. It's just an excuse to fight in the game.
Add crappy director and low budget, WOW the movie sucks.

   by Stealth! - 2009-03-04
 » LOL

I also called it. I mean honestly the people they've chose for the characters were just pitiful. I mean TABOO as VEGA? Chris Klein as Charlie? Kristen Kruek as Chun Li? Lui Kang(sorry forgot his real name) as Gen? They were jokes.

The only actor they got right to play the role was Michael Clarke Duncan as Balrog.

I also expect DB:E to fail miserably. Tip to movie producers, directors...etc: ANIME SHOULD STAY AS ANIME NOT LIVE ACTION FILMS. >_>

   Re: popmchnex - 2009-03-04
 » Balrog

Michael Clarke Duncan was a great balrog. Neil McDonough was a good Bison, but he looked nothing like him, and was very shallow.

What Hollywood fails to realize is that fighting games can't be made into movies with horrible results.... look at Mortal Kombat. God. They spend all this money training the actors, that they've got none left for production value and proper scripting.

   Re: infinitysend - 2009-03-05
 » agreed.

Let's not get started on Cowboy Bebop movie with Keanu as Spike.... o_o

My theory why the SF movie did so poorly is because Watchmen comes out this weekend. Everyone's just saving their money to see it instead. :)
