Wii - Image 1Stoking the "Wii is a fad" argument this time is Darren Williams, Sega A&R's head of content. Hey, we haven't had one of these in a while.

Williams believes that the Wii is a fad (sorta, inasmuch as a board game is a fad), and is also skeptical that the Wii may be the stepping stone for new gamers to move up to the big boys, the Xbox 360 and the PS3:

I think on one hand the Wii has become the most expensive board game on Earth.

It's the kind of thing that families will play at Christmas, and probably won't play again throughout the remainder of the year. So things like Wii Sports, Wii Fit to a certain extent, that's great.

[...] So whether or not it will become an entry point to go onto different gaming, high-def gaming? [...] The Wii is great fun because it's a very physical machine. Any game that doesn't take advantage of the Wii's input methodology tends to be a little bit sneered upon.

[...] I think there's a market on the Wii for different tastes of gaming. Whether then people will graduate upwards, that's an open question. I'm skeptical about it, because I think what the Wii offers is a very physical, fun experience.

Simply put - the PS3 and 360 don't offer the type of physical gaming the Wii does, so it's unlikely that those who only got into gaming because of the Wii will step up to the HD level. Williams does, however, posits this thought:

It will be interesting to see what Nintendo does with the Wii 2 - how they choose to combat Sony and Microsoft, because they've obviously won through with the input methodology, but where do they go next? The fact that we don't know, but Nintendo probably does, is why it's the biggest company in Japan.

Cue Nintendo-defending post from ISOHaven in 3... 2... 1...

   Re: masta.g.86 - 2008-11-07
 » ...0

The Wii certainly DOES feel like a fad as of late. The last time I've actually played a Wii game was a couple of months ago. Essentially I've just been using it as a Gamecube and messing around with homebrew.

I'm sure most of us have invited a friend over to try out Wii Sports. Next thing you know, they also have a Wii. Some of my family members have bought one as well. My mother bought one last year and now it sits on top of her VCR collecting dust.

With no real reason for hardcore gamers to stick around, I'd say the Wii for the most part IS a fad. A small handful of good games and everything else is crap...

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-11-07
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Thanks for the introduction Freeplay. It's always nice to see lame, worhtless comments that bring nothing to the table because you don't actually have anything to say on the subject except for your normal meaningless shlt talk.

Getting on to the subject. As always, I bring FACTS to the table. Let's just pretend for a moment that the Wii is a fad. After all, the pet rock made someone rich!!!

1. The product makes money and spreads joy. Sales figures alone support the Wii 100%. So even if it is a fad....so what? What does that information tell us? On to #2

#2. A console IS NOT A FAD. They've been around for how long? They're going to be around for how long? By pure definition alone, calling the Wii a fad is pure ignorance.

"a temporary fashion, notion, manner of conduct, etc., esp. one followed enthusiastically by a group."

When someone can explain to me how a product, having been sold STRONG for 24 months, is a fad...then I'll agree that the Wii is a fad. However, even then, so what? What does that mean? Absolutely nothing.

Nintendo has been around for a long time and will stick around for a long time. That's the exact opposite of "fad".

Hey Freeplay, when you're done choking on that let me know and I'll pull my boot out of your ass!

   Re: RavenSPe - 2008-11-07
 » Sorry ISO

But by pure definition a fad is anything that is followed/bought by a group of people (fanboys, casual gamers, etc.) and is only done so temporarily (not permanent). Yes this includes the PS3 and 360 as none of them will be around forever. And yes I know Nintendo will be around a long time but that's not what is being discussed here. The Wii is a product and can be it's own fad regardless of how long the company has been around.

Of course if you want to go by pure definition of the urban dictionary (lol) then your argument is even worse and isolates the Wii as a fad even further. Sorry.

ISOHaven sure has a lot of time on his hands to defend *****tendo and the Pii. If it had any good games (no, it doesn't, you're an idiot by the way, also, the Wii sucks, has no good games, the games it does have are ports or rehashes or poorly thought out uses for the dildo or minigames) he's be playing it instead of waiting to jump on any anti-Nintendo comments.

Backstreet boys were around for a while as well. They turned out to be quite the fad.

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-11-07
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

@RavenSPe - How do you figure? According to your false logic then ALL consumer products are fads as ALL of them will eventually stop production. That would make the term useless. So how do we isolate the fads? Easy, if a product lasts IT'S LIFE CYCLE then it's not a fad. The Wii will certainly last it's life cycle.

@FreePlay - What are you thanking him for? According to him ALL THREE are fads. If that's the case then this bit if news cancels itself out. Meaning the information is worthless. Your point wasn't proven.

"Seriously, suck Nintendo's wang a little harder next time."

That ends that. Thanks for proving what a jackass you are.

@Orlyeh - Hilarious!!! I have no problem standing up to a bunch of fanboys. Bring it bltches!

I find it hilarious that a consumer product can have almost 50% market share, be 1 of 3 and still have people whine and cry about how it must be a failure simply because it doesn't suit THEM. Such small minds around here. HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

   Re: JeimuzuWii - 2008-11-08
 » @ Orlyeh

Gee, calling people idiots and making up childish nicknames for anything you dislike? Sounds like someone is picking fights in the playground. Try laying off the fanboyism and work on bringing some decent points to the table next time. Yarly.

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-11-08

@RavenSPe - How do you figure? According to your false logic then ALL consumer products are fads as ALL of them will eventually stop production.

--That is true, you did say by pure definition did you not?

That would make the term useless. So how do we isolate the fads?

--It's not useless, I understand full heartedly that electronics are all fads and become absolete shortly after they are released and replaced by higher end models.

Easy, if a product lasts IT'S LIFE CYCLE then it's not a fad. The Wii will certainly last it's life cycle

--Please explain what a life cycle is lol, in one of your arguments about the backstreet boys you say they are a fad because they did not last long. Perhaps they lasted as long as they had intended to and therefore lasted their "life cycle" and are NOT a fad? You make little sense.

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-11-08
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Nothing you said changes anything. In my last post I was addressing PURE DEFINITION.

So again, according to you EVERYTHING we can touch is a fad. That is ludicrous. I wasn't just talking about electronics, I was talking about EVERYTHING. What should have been your FIRST CLUE was when I mentioned ALL CONSUMER PRODUCTS. But then again I believe I've already established your inability to properly understand the English language. Or to follow along. Or to pay attention to detail.

And you think "I" make little sense? You can't even follow along with a simply definition.

The Backstreet Boys did not have a FULL carrier. It was a SHORT LIVED carrier by anyone's standards. I believe I made that perfectly clear, try harder to follow along. Even their failed attempt at a new album....well....failed.

ISOHaven: Say one negative thing about Nintendo.

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-11-08
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

I've said plenty of negative things about Nintendo before. The reason you need me to do so now is because you're an idiot who can only understand what he's seen with his own eyes. You are too mind boggling stupid to comprehend that other thoughts or views could possibly exist outside of what you see in front of you.

I think it f'ing stinks that the US has to wait until mid '09 for the DSi.

The NDSL is a major POS for people who want to carry it around in their pockets all the time as THREE of them have malfunctioned for that exact reason (shoulder buttons) and now my third broken unit is out of warranty. Thus the main fuel for my above comment. No, I'm not alone on this one.

When you make a portable game system, you want to make it as small as possible. WTF did they try to make the Wii as small as possible? There is no reason they couldn't have beefed it up a little more and given us at least HD resolution. Not full blown HD titles mind you. Even if only 720p. Just to save us HD guys the hassle.

$12 dollars for abandonware? I'm all for making a buck but that doesn't seem smart to me. It's the exact reason I've not purchased any of those more expensive VC titles. I've purchased a couple cheaper ones and that's as far as I'd go for games I've already played but want that good old console feel.

You asked for 1 and I gave you 4. So, other then making yourself look like a complete tool, was there some other reason for your childish activity?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'm the most non-biased person you will EVER meet.

Before you reply, let me quote my self ahead of time for those that can't pay attention for shlt.

"the most non-biased" does not equal "non-biased"

Can I ask what everybody has against ISO. I love that guy (...you know what I mean). I think he's friggin' hilarious. Not only that, but he is truly one of the few people on the flame fest that is the QJ comments section(s) that bring true facts to the fight. He is intelligent, witty, and honest.

Now that I'm done sounding kinda gay...

Anyway, ISO, as is usually true, is right about this. The Wii is not a fad. Look at recent events. We see, in this past year, that many great and real games have been released on the Wii. Here is a list of my personal favorites.

Super Mario Galaxy (ok '07, I don't care)
SSBB
Mario Kart Wii (I intentionally started with those 3 Ninty titles to get it out of the way)
No More Heroes
Medal of Honor: Vanguard
Scarface: the World is Yours (I will explain this one after the list)
And 2 TBR
Madworld
The Conduit

Now then, let me go into this further.

Yeah, the first three are Nintendo's own games. You know why? Nintendo actually knows that the Wii is good for this kind of thing. The 3rd party devs that make all the gimmicky games are just rediculous in that they don't even try.

Now then, moving on.

No More Heroes is a Wii exclusive, and a really really great game. I love NMH, it's one of my favorite Wii games. It is probably one of the best. It is completely original (alll except for maybe the beam katana), and it has great, inovative, and easy-to-use controls. NMH is true Wii greatness.

MoH: Vanguard may also be on PS2, but that isn't the point. The point is that it shows that you can really pull off a good FPS on the Wii. The Conduit will do the same only better I'm sure.

Scarface may be on everything, but it shows that the Wii can also be good for GTA-esque games. I'm not sure why Rockstar hasn't made a GTA for the Wii yet, it would be great!

Mad World is going to be amazing. Mad World just shows the true spirit of the Wii as MH does. Unique style, great graphics (yeah Wii doesn't have good graphics, but great meaning for the Wii), and sheer fun. Mad World also proves that the Wii can be used for some friggin' violence now and again.

I'm just as tired of all these stupid gimmicky, play-with-the-family, have fun for some-small-amount-of-minutes games. But, these are starting to fall short on the Wii, and we see more and more actual GAMES coming to the White Rectangle (as my friends and I occasionally refer to it as).

We all know that the Wii really falls short in some departments (graphics, online, etc.), but that's now reason to hate it. As soon as the devs realise that the Wii can be utilized for a true gaming experience, we will finally begin to see the Wii gain a name for it's fame, rather than infamy.

   Re: jacobian91 - 2008-11-10

And you do nothing but shamelessly lie about Nintendo. What's your point?

"He spends HOURS every day telling people their opinion is stupid and they are stupid."

Another lie. I spend minutes a day showing people how your lies are opinion and not fact. That is a major difference.

"When that doesn't occupy his every waking minute, he sucks mamma's ti-tee in her basement where he lives."

Wow, how long did it take you to come up with that?

"He laughs at his own horrible jokes, but doesn't realize he is the joke."

Dont worry about it guys. I remember a LONG time ago when MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice put out CD's (tapes too). Everyone at the time said "oh, its a fad....." They all claimed it wouldnt last. Here we are 20 years later and Hip Hop culture is STILL very influential in todays society, and it does NOT take much to be a rapper and make money. They shovel a LOT of garbage onto the airwaves and STILL get radio play.

SO, I dont think the wii has much to worry about when people lump it into the same statement

"just a fad....." Its lasted a lot longer than leg warmers, bell bottoms, skinny jeans, Webkinz and so on....

About the only "FADS" it hasnt outlived are Hip Hop, and Madonna!

» Who said wii was a fad?

seriously ISOhaven, did you even bother to read the post cause their calling the wii an expensive board game, not a fad. Board game like monopoly which you play maybe 4 times a year and for the rest of the year it's in the closet collecting dust. But monopoly is not a fad.

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-11-07
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Seriously? No, I did not read the article seriously. I read is casually. And I read it accurately.

Did you SERIOUSLY read the article? I guess not, here's a quote for you:

"Williams believes that the Wii is a fad"

How about you get off your high horse and read it again. But first, wipe all that egg off your face.
   by Silver-Tiger - 2008-11-07
 » ...

By my personal experience, he's right. I just play with my Wii I got a new game. After I finished the game, the Wii is collecting dust again.

BUT, the same applies for many of X360, PC and PS3 games too. The difference is that these games have more replay value, I think. (i.e. online play, trophies/achievements....)
So not really about the console, but more about the games.

   by MARTINSTATIC - 2008-11-07
 » Ha

The fact that I can play legends of games such as Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy is only the tip of the iceberg.

The homebrew for Wii means that I can run emulators, listen to music, watch DVD's, videos, and run Linux on a nice small white box that ouputs 720p at a price that's pretty cool.

For me, that's a pretty neat machine to be sold in game and electronic shops everywhere.
Not to mention, it also has the said appeal for families and non-gamers for when they visit.
I'm off to play Ocarina Of Time on my little neat near-silent white special box.

   Re: mpcooper - 2008-11-07
 » ....

Here comes the troll fanboys from under their bridge. The wii has a week game lineup for a while which may be a reason a lot of people lose intrest in the console. I think its still too early to determine if the wii is going to be a fad or not. Nintendo may pull something out of there hat by next christmas, but I am not going to say that this thing may not be a fad because honestly it does look that way.

   Re: MARTINSTATIC - 2008-11-08
 » @mpcooper

I'm not a ''troll fanboy'', I love my 360.
I was just stating the good points about the Wii since people are just mentioning the bad points, rather than the good, homebrew related points.
For me, as a gamer, the homebrew for Wii makes it worth MY money, that's all.

I hate fanboys.

Also, you misspelled "weak".
   by Kaneco - 2008-11-07
 » ....

There's no original good games for the wii... >_>

Either they're ports of the ps2 (I'm not saying that's bad) or pure shovelware straight up crap!

I think Nintendo should be the only one's allowed to make games on the wii, since 3rd party developer's are hardly trying and just release a port or just crap to make some quick dough.

...I think the only original game wii had recently is ubisoft's "No more Heroes" that hasn't been done before for any other systems other than the wii itself.

I'm not saying ports are bad...but some ports the developer's are so lazy that make the most un-playable control schemes that make the game a complete failure. -_-

I hope these 3rd party developers get their act together, otherwise the Wii will become the most hated console in history by hardcore gamers alone...because of the way they're treating the fastest and most popular console in the market doesn't justify buying one at all....

   by Stewies - 2008-11-07

Definitely some major hating going on around here. Fanboys or not, people are clearly tired of the Wii's domination and thus, such weak arguments against Nintendo. The only things justifiable are the ports/shovelware but in the end...

The Wii is the strongest thing in the industry today, and if thats a fad, then the industry is in big trouble. The 360 is only good for First person shooter and first person shooter accessories(ha). "The 360 is only good for First person shooter and first person shooter accessories(ha)." I guess you never played racing games or madden09 on it.

"The ps3 has trouble out-selling the ps2 on a weekly basis." I would agree a year ago but recently I got one and it is nolonger ps2 compatible. But then why the hell would I use it to play ps2 games? I have to admin in my city PS3 is not as hot as 360 (and you can tell how much shelf space .. 360 has twice as much space in each store I visit). PS3 is a solid system but there are just way too few exclusive around. Since I got a 360 a lot earlier there is not point to get most of older PS3 games as they are already available on 360 and I played them all.

I'm not going to bother to claim the wii is the best system of the gen, because it's not. However, I don't think it's a fad or the piece of garbage most people make it out to be either. It does have great games, such as Super Mario Galaxy, Brawl(yes it was over hyped but it's still a great game), World of Goo, and No More Heroes. There's also ToS2 coming out later this month. It also may pick up a bit next year, with Madworld and The Conduit on the way.
