Rockstar to the gaming industry: Rally behind Manhunt 2 and us - Image 1Some are saying that there's a slim possibility that the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) may reconsider its ban on Nintendo Wii and PlayStation Portable video game Manhunt 2 after Rockstar has appealed its decision. If you think Rockstar is going to wait quietly, you are dead wrong.

Rockstar Leeds Co-founder and Studio Head Gordan Hall was recently interviewed by Develop Mag and according to the industry veteran, what BBFC did to Manhunt 2 is ultimately an attack to the video gaming industry. He said:

If you look at a film like Man Bites Dog, it makes Manhunt look tame in comparison, but that film can be bought by anyone aged 18. I don't think Rockstar specifically has been picked on, but I do think that the wider issue attacks our entire industry. We need to teach people that games are an art form - they are more artistic than film.

Gordon Hall then added that he is appealing to the whole industry to rally behind Rockstar because it is highly probable that what happened to their company will also happen to other development studios in the future. The studio head also mentioned that the industry is maturing and more edgy ideas are coming forth:

We are an adult entertainment industry - we may have started out with child-like technology making games solely for a younger audience, but it's just not like that anymore. It might take legislature a little while to catch up, but if the industry sticks together hopefully we can change people's attitudes quicker.

 » Stop blaming Video Games.

Whats the name of the game that caused Francis Ferdinand to be assassinated? I cant seem to remember?

What was the Video Game that Hitler played?? I forget.

What was that game that caused 9/11 ?

Last time I checked there have been a few major tragedies in the world and I cant seem to remember the video games that caused them.

Just like music, TV and movies before, Video Games are just the latest thing to blame. Its easier to blame than teach.

Rather than look at video games as a cause why are video games not looked at as an outlet to displace rage and anger that does not physically hurt anyone?

 » hey!

everyone who thinks that only violent video games are only to blame for kids going on mass murders are dead wrong! think about it, for 1). these mass murders are a rare thing to come by, as are mentally insane retards who play out things they see like movies, video games ec. just because we have some mentally retarded/insane sykos out in the world doesnt mean that a violent game shouldnt be released. I mean think of movies like saw, hostile, movies like that. and tell me that those movies are less disturbing, graphic, than manhunt 2. Just because some kids get their hands on these violent games doesnt mean that they should be banned for the people who can actually go out and buy them for themselves. Once again its the parents fault if they let their kids watch R movies and play M games when the kid is 7, and they wonder why he turned out to be a mass murderer?

if industries are going to be so anal about things i say that we'll have to go back to only playing games with fuzzy bunnies and watching movies of bambi running in the forest. just so everyone doesnt get any ideas of killing people.

 » Manhunt 2 release

Why won't they release the game in scandinavia and nordic countries with an 18+ rating and then think about UK and USA?

 » kids?

Anyone trying to 'save the children from the evil games' needs to shut up right now. This debate has nothing to do with them. If the kids get the games, its the parents/retail's problem.

18 year olds can drive, they can drink alcahol, they can see all movies, and they can buy guns. But, the BBFC says they cant play a game? Yeah sure, its a bit horrific, but since they are old enough, they can handle it. They are not some retarded kids who will post a re-creation on youtube.

All of a sudden, the BBFC has become the new Jack Thomson. The End.

Here is my interpretation of the latest Rockstar news:

"Oh, those nasty people won't let us release our sucky nasty game. We haven't got any valid arguments as to why they should, so we're just going to try and pretend we're your friends now, even though we always despised you in the past.

If you don't support us you wont be able to release a sucky nasty game of your own in the future. You'll have to continue to make interesting, enjoyable games with more than a one dimentional character who just kills people in boring ways to cover up the lack of gameplay.

It's... its'...it's...just not fair.....Waaaaaahhhhh!!!"

 » Do you think....

With all the time delay in the game being released will there possibly be a ps3 version??? lmao... Then the BBFC can complain whether there is more violence and realism at Xbox 360 60fps or PS3 30 fps. Not to hate on PS3 cause I own and love it just makes a funny argument. :-)

 » Evidence

I've seen many people have replied stating that video games have been shown to increase violence, but I have never seen any evidence to support this.

 » my opinion

I, personally, have never really enjoyed too much gore in video games, movies, and TV. I don't plan on getting this game mainly because I am disgusted by its gore, and I would not enjoy slicing throats all the time.
Although I don't enjoy violence like that in general media, I strongly feel Rockstar has a point, if you allow it in movies why not in games. I don't think that the ban of MH2 was appropriate, nor do I think Rockstar should make it rated AO.

To finish, BBFC should re-examine the ban and determine if it is just, and if so, they should also find it just to ban the numerous violent, and adult movies out there. It is silly to allow something as detrimental to the mind as Porn to the eyes of the public yet ban a violent game.

Sux sum dic.... It's the parents fault and the their schools that effect a childs mind. Video games are just entertainment as is movies.

 » absolute rubbish

Rockstar, you do damage to the industry. Stop releasing sensationalist pap like manhunt, with no artistic value whatsoever. Manhunt is a game that is crap, poorly conceived and riding controversy to make market share.
Go back to games like Bully and GTA3 that were at least fun!
Ban this rubbish everywhere. It does nothing but taint the industry at a time when we're trying to get credibility as art. Americans, grow up and get over your obsession with violence.

 » re: Psyberslayer

Exactly. This should be a non-issue. Proper education by parents should be the item in question. It's easy to play the blame game but if someone is predisposed to killing mass amounts of people it's not the game that tells them to do it - it's purely the environment and genetics. Sure the game could give them the idea, but that can be applied to anything. If you need to solely rely on the game industry and game stores to limit what your child does - then you're a pretty lousy parent. Maybe we should take your children away from you because you're not old enough to properly care for them?

 » Round, round we go...

Like the argument over gun laws and ownership, the issue of violence in video games and movies is unresolvable. It simply comes down to a matter of opinion. Period. For every single argument pro or con, there is always a counter-argument con or pro. Witness this thread, for example.

The disheartening thing for me is the fact that we are all free to consciously shun this type of game, but instead many choose to embrace it and seemingly revel in the violence.

Where does the line get drawn for most people? How much violence is needed for the majority of people to agree that it's too much? Why don't we see games that allow rape, child molestation, torture. and the mutilation of small animals? Would the supporters of games like Manhunt rush out to buy such games? From what I've read in here, I believe many would.

But like I said, there's no way to mandate or legislate a stop humanity's thirst for violence, so it seems that the only thing to do is concede, and in the immortal words of the great philosopher Duke Nukem, "let God sort 'em out."

ok, parents, pay attention to your kids and the things they do and surround themselves with. i grew up on violent, grotesque, gory horror movies (legit, i started watching them regularly at the age of 5) and started playing video games at around the same age. i've played every kind of game under the sun and not a single one has made me want to do anything brash and irrational. i played wolfenstein and doom when i was 10 or 11, GTA since i was 12 or 13, other violent games like loaded, quake, counter-strike, fallout, etc. i played the original manhunt and absolutely loved it. it was a great adult-oriented stealth action game. it had great controls, awesome ambience and level design and one of the craziest stories i've ever heard. it's not these companies and the esrb and whatever you want to blame... it's the parents, pay attention. stop being ignorant. if your kid is impressioned by games and movies, your kid probably has a problem, or he's 7 and playing GTA in the school-yard because you allowed him to be exposed to it. my point is, if a 14 year old is trying to act out things he sees in games, the kid has a problem the parents should already be aware of if they were good parents. rating systems and such can't do all the work, step up and do your part too. i don't wanna hear about how hard it is or any of that crap, you made the decision, own up to it. i'm so sick of people pointing the finger at everyone but themselves, no one seems to be able to accept responsibility here in america. it's like drunk drivers that want you to feel bad for them cuz they got behind the wheel drunk and killed someone. it's your own fault, deal with it.

» I agree with "yeah" at the top

i agree with yeah(unregistered)... my parents taught me right from wrong, so even though i love games like manhunt and silent hill and ***** like that, id never act them out... just to show my support.. i repost his comment

" the problem is that u so call parents dont teach your kids right from wrong morals an all that other stuff. so when ur uneducated child (that was never thought how to act the proper way) goes out side they do stupid things an the u guys need some one to blaim beside ur self for being bad parent. i mean i grew up playing all types of crazy game (an i still do) an im good because my parent did a good job."

hell yeah man!
