EpyxEpyx, truly one of the great old-school gaming publishers are coming back to the gaming scene after a long hiatus. System 3, who has secured the rights to the Epyx game library, is looking to revamp some of the classics and bring them into the modern day, including Impossible Mission and California Games (which happen to be its first two projects) and the classic Commodore 64 trilogy of The Last Ninja.

January 2007, marks the date that Impossible Mission will be released for the PSP and Nintendo DS, with California Games launching around May 2007 - also for the same two systems. The Wii editions will be released roughly three weeks after this.

California Games, it seems, will be a combo game including unlockable features of Winter Games and Summer Games, whilst Impossible Mission will use the original animations, but with updated backgrounds and the ability to choose characters to play (including a female android agent).

Mark Kale, System 3 founder said in an interview, "You gotta keep the gameplay mechanics the same or else it ceases to be the original game and you're only using the game brand to sell games. It ceases to be Impossible Mission or California Games or what have you. …What we're doing is we're incorporating the original gameplay and mechanics and bringing the gameplay up to date." There is also the trilogy of The Last Ninja coming in April 2007.

Be sure to stayed tuned for more info as it comes to hand.

2 years and they will be out of bussiness. California Games? Seriously? That game sucked.

Didn't Impossible Mission have a glitch that actually made it impossible?

Alright, great news! Used to love these three games on C64. Bring on the old-school

» Can't the just leave them alone?

Mission Impossible is solvable (at least on the C64 version), I've done it several times...

I just wish they'd leave an un-touched version of it available. The 'updated' version of Atari 2600 games that someone released realyl sucked (It was Pong, for example, but the background wasn't black, it looked like a brick wall with gang graffiti all over it.... It was just stupid.) Put in the 'updated' versions if you have to, but leave an option to play it exactly as we are used to it from our old-school days...

Hell, I can play all the Epyx games right now with my C-64 Emulator on the PSP. If they are only going to release one game at time (instead of an anthology), it better be $9.99 or less, and the original, un-touched version BETTER be available somewhere (and not by unlocking, it better be available instantly) or I won't waste my money on it...

#1: California Games ruled, you can't compare it to todays games just 'cause you're 12 years...

#5: Right on!

#6: Why would you want the "old" versions, I barely play them more than 5 secs in the Namco PSX games etc. Oh, and System3 aren't that desperate for your $5 weekly allowance that they're gonna include it just 'cause you want it. Go play an emulator, moron!

Would love to see updated versions of Jumpman / Jumpman Jr. & perhaps the Apshai trilogy though!

 » nice

Mission Impossible! Niiice! If they stick to the original format without too many changes that will be a must have title for me. I love MI with a passion!

It better not be too pricey though, I already own a C64 and a good 500+ games aswell as having them on the C64 emu on the PSP....

 » Fun is relative

This is great news. And, yes, some lamer kiddies aren't going to want it, and then diss it, but they'll shell out megabucks for the latest craptacular mario remake, and not understand it's the SAME THING. People are DIFFERENT, some like a game, some don't.

As for why you want the old version - because it's nice to be able to compare, and when you hit something 'improved' that you don't remember being that way, you can go check. And see your memory is faulty - or that it's NOT!

Impossible mission impossible? No - and Reptile, a Hungarian friend of mine, can complete it in a half hour with 0 deaths. He did this at a demoparty in Hungary, live. We were in AWE. So, yeah, I want it on DS/PSP so I can practice and be that good too (:

And yes, skate or die works on the emulators. And yes, I want it on ds/psp.

 » Last Ninja at Last!

Nice, I've been waiting to play the last ninja series again... especially the 2nd episode. I used to play it through once a year long after they stopped releasing new(commercial) games for C64. I hope they'll make some improvements musically, artistically, and I'd also like to have some more enemies to slay on some scenes. :)

 » System 3?

I'm confused,, any URLS to System 3?.. last I checked System 3 has become Studio 3.. at studio3.co.uk .. and I cant find any "System 3" websites that has anything to do with games anymore.. ofcourse the Studio3.co.uk website is about as up to date as a papyrus scroll..

AND WHERE IS LAST NINJA 4 WE WERE PROMISED?!?

Hahah I'm 20 actually, I owned California Games on the NES and it sucks balls. BMX is the only fun game. Surfing is alright.

 » You make no sense...

#7: You say why would you want the old versions when you only play them for more than 5 sec, but if they change the backgrounds to different graphics you are now willing to buy it and play it for hours? Careful with your comments there, you are just showing your intelligence.

Most of the people that want these classic games (and really care about them enough to play them for more than 5 minutes) WANT the original versions they grew up with. In the homebrew scene, most of these people are already running emulators.

Are you saying you would really buy the C-64 version of California Games ported to the PSP with new backgrounds (which will probably be product placement ads) for $39.99? To me, that's just stupid (and I have no problem spending money on this stuff... Hell, I have 5 PSPs already, and am planning on buying a 6th.)

(I buy one when I want to mod it: One original Jap 1.0, 2 original US 1.5s, one PSP with PSP2TV mod, one 2.0+ PSP and I'll be buying one with a mod-chip installed... Of course, it helps to be in the industry so it's all a tax right-off... :) )

California games sucked on NES, but it's Genesis encarnation was the BEST sports game out there IMHO. I spent soooo many hours playing that game on genesis, and I pray that this new one will be atleast half as good. Finally a game that I am looking forward to! California Games for genesis > all :p

It was the Atari 7800 version that was "impossible" becasue one of the puzzle piece was behind one of the computer terminals.

There is a Game Boy advance version that was made by a Melbourne developer Oceanic studio's I think anyway the rom let's hope System 3 stick to the original gameplay otherwise it will suck
