Nintendo's Wii and DS next-gen gaming platforms - Image 1 With Nintendo's excellent sales in North America this past year, a similar story was being told in Europe as the company's next-gen gaming platforms trump all other consoles in the region. Based on the numbers released by Nintendo UK, Wii sales reached around six million while DS sales hit an astounding 20 million units.

One of the most notable achievements of the Wii console was its lifetime-to-date sales of over 2 million units, exceeding that of Microsoft's Xbox 360 console. First party titles were all the rage in the region as well, with Wii Play racking up 2.3 million units, followed by The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, and Mario Party 8 with over 1 million added to their names each.

In the handheld scene, the DS was second to none with its own first party titles dominating over other releases. Nintendogs alone sold 8 million copies, followed by Brain Training (a.k.a. Brain Age in North America) with 5 million units sold. Nintendo's Touch! Generations series also accounted for more than half of all the sales of first party titles for the best selling handheld in the region.

According to data released by Nintendo UK, the DS handheld has the distinction of being the best selling hardware of any kind in 2007, with a UK installed user base of 5 million units.
