Nintendo: piracy still rampant in other countries, asks U.S. for help - Image 1

Nintendo's going on a swashbuckling offensive, asking the US Trade Representative for help on making pirates walk the plank. Not the first time they did so either. They're particularly targeting circumvention devices such as game copiers and mod chips, saying:

It is important for parents to note that if users of circumvention devices are children, they may be exposed to unsuitable content downloaded from the Internet and played on their Nintendo systems.

Hmm... so does that make it ok if the circumvention devices are used by adults? Hurr hurr. Nintendo also sent out a press release, calling out certain countries where "piracy is rampant," and China is at the top of their list, describing it as the "hub of production for counterfeit Nintendo video game products." Hell yeah. Remember the Vii?

Also making it on their black books are Brazil, Korea, Mexico, Paraguay, and Spain. Sounds like we're going to hear more news about video game raids soon enough.

Nintendo is harsh on piracy:

 » Aw.

In the Philippines the last tmie I went, they sell pirated games in the malls. I've never seen a game store that didn't have a sign saying "CAN MOD CONSOLE" except in major retailers.. You gotta remember that in those countries games are a lot more expensive than here, to them. The economy is just different and I'm sure pirating doesn't help lower the prices. Oh well. The US should deal with stopping our own problems before helping a video game company. I'd rather see us work to decrease global warming than beat up pirates..

   Re: papajag - 2009-02-26
 » ...

When I went they modded the PSP for 1000 pesos($20) and sold PSP games for 100 pesos($2). It may be cheap to us but to the people in the Philippines 100 pesos can be hard to get. I have no doubt in my mind that they mod Wii and 360s too.

   Re: Navani - 2009-02-26
 » Yup

Papajag they do mod 360s and Wiis. And you must have gone a few years ago.. I heard it's almost 30 pesos to a dollar now, it used to be ~55 pesos to a dollar. But man.. They really don't make much there, 1000 pesos is indeed a lot.

Funny thing is on the Wii there are very few games even worth pirating...
Doubt Nintendo care too much not like its loosing them a lot of sales they're raking it in!

"It is important for parents to note that if users of circumvention devices are children, they may be exposed to unsuitable content downloaded from the Internet and played on their Nintendo systems."

oh please, they are loosing money and all they care about are the "poor children"?

1. A child who knows how to circumvent security measures like on the DS or Wii surely knows about the details of the games it downloads.

2. Why is it so hard for companies to say the truth sometimes? Everybody knows that piracy equals moneyloss, so why not say "Piracy costs us a lot of money, we have to stop it!"

That's why Nintendo updates that erase gamesaves say "to prevent system damage" rather than "to prevent homebrew use and profit loss" for the reason.

Except screwing around with your system ACTUALLY CAN cause data loss. You idiot! The only liar here is YOU.

I've never had any data loss from any homebrew. I've never heard of anyone else having any problems with the altered Zelda gamesave either.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Ok, here is where you brain seems to misfire and is unable to understand anything it's given.

"screwing around" with your system "CAN" cause data loss.

That's why Nintendo has a ZERO "screwing around" policy.

Grow up and learn to use your brain! Only pathetic dipshlts can't understand such simple ideas.

i cant say i feel bad when i "backup" a game "i own" cuz i would be lying, but i would be lying also i i told i dont love videogames, cuz i do i love them with my heart and my soul, i have been playing for 28 years now and i do i do love them i was there when the atari started all, when sears got vcs machines i saw street fighter born when i was like 10 years old and oh my what a good times, i have spented more money in videogames than i have with my kids, lol, but i also be lying i told thet the industry i came to love and support havent gone to hell, to greedy hell when they release crap after crap and they wait that we but rent and WASTE our money in that crap i wouldnt mind paying 50 or 60 bucks for games that will last a year a month that i wouldnt be bored to play time after time, but hell im not going to pay that for "mario kart 30 we used the same *****ty code that we used in the 64" or "super crap brothers tournament brawl again edition" but wait this year it will come with guess what a LOUSY and HORRENDOUS online lag free (free cuz it will not cost you money the lag's on us) and the list go on and on, so when they start to make games like contra III alien wars, the REAL castlevanias like super castlevania IV with NEW gameplay and NEW stories and not that craps thet are virtually the same ol "lets copy super metroid and make another symphony of money number THEN, maybe then ill think in spending AGAIN 50 or 60 bucks in games that I KNOW wont be called CRAP in a month, thanks

   Re: Navani - 2009-02-26
 » lol

Strangely I agree with you.. on certain things.. I want more original games to go on the market. I don't mean original like another FPS with more things attached, I'm so sick of FPS games, I mean like how Conker's Bad Fur Day was, how .hack was (single player "MMO" .. that's the only one I know of anyway), how Katamari and even Pokemon (Red and Blue!) were.

I just wish that developers weren't so quick to make a buck by shoving out sequel after sequel, or by charging people for DLC that should come with the game itself.. I mean stuff like the GTA DLC I can understand purchasing, but stuff like Soulcalibur IV .. "EXCLUSIVE CHARACTERS! Buuut if you pay I'll give you the other". Focus on the gamers, stop worrying about them

On another note, I just bought Conker's Bad Fur Day for the N64 haha, they need to stop editing game content.. I can't wait to start peeing on people in multiplayer again

 » It doesn't really help

that now the wii can run backups through the homebrew channel no modchip needed. Now anyone with an SD card and a little knowhow can get backups running.

   by Ryosuke - 2009-02-26
» so what else is new?

right, so in a perfect world where people could try any game before buying and DUAL audio is compulsory for all foreign games, then maybe piracy will not be needed anymore.

In the meantime, try making Namco Bandai release Unlimited Cruise with the original voice overs because like they did with all the previous one piece games, they ruined them completely.

» ehm hang on a sec

Now hang on since this discussion has derailed quite a bit.

"shoving out sequel after sequel"

right... you mentioned .HACK a series of 7 games on a single console. A bit contradictory don't you think? (You watch terminal disk and you have saved about...80+ hours)

Just a quick reminder people. You do not like the overhyped games then do NOT buy them. But how many of you actually supported original IPs by buying them RETAIL? Did you get de blob? Maybe Zack and Wiki? Or maybe No more Heroes? No you all got games like HALO and Brawl while some of you keep arguing how bad the industry has become.

YOU can make this industry better. I personally am fine with the big names (you tend to forget that polish does make a difference) but if you don't, support smaller groups with original games.

so in other words, DO NOT GET A "BACKUP COPY" OF THEIR GAMES. GET A COPY OF THE BIG NAMES INSTEAD.

Agree completely

   Re: Tekkenlord - 2009-02-27
 » wait i agree

I DONT BUY THEM, i dont buy them cuz they are shi.t period even no more heroes thats is a "decent" game i wouldnt buy it and you know why? cuz its not the "originality on a name" on a game i want i can play super smash brawl 100... BUT FOR CHRIST SAKE use a DIFFERENT ENGINE make a REAL NEW GAME not the fu.ki.ng same game i played ten yars ago, even in a "new" game, no more heroes? i mean yeah i never played a game like that bef... o wait i did i actually did, zack and wiki yeah i never playe.... oh ***** crap i too played a game like that before, im not saying companies dont exploit new names, go ahead do it, make a metroid prime 5 if you want but man, really make a fuc.ki.ng NEW game not metroid prime 1.5 cuz i already make a bizillion dolar with the first one why not keep using it and say its a "different" game, after all they are stupid, so dont give me the "support the orginal titles" cuz thats my complaint THERES NO *****.ING original games, maybe "names" but not games i said i want another contra but man dont do it in a portable crap called DS and make an effort doing it areal effort, dont make castlevania "judgement" make a real castlevania game with a NEW ENGINE and new gameplay, i dont care if the game is called super mario gay galaxy 10 but if it FEELS and PLAYS different than mario 64 how? well thats not my job but im pretty sure it can be achieved specially if they already won a trizillion dolars with the original one.

   by Ryosuke - 2009-02-27
 » ENOUGH

There are way too many syntax errors to even bother understanding the above but honestly "not the fu.ki.ng same game i played ten yars ago" do you really know what you want to play? Have you played de blob? Have you played No More Heroes? Mirror's Edge? Probably not. As for the DS, there is a TON of original and GOOD games no one bought, from drawn to life to the amazing soul bubbles, ideas NEVER BEFORE seen on a game and that comes from someone who started playing games on his atari 2600. So how can a 10 year old (judging by your writing level) be already be *****ing about lack of originality?

It is people like you that bring the quality of gaming down. It is people like you who make the industry treat us like we are brainless sheep and it is people like you that give the impression that games are for kids who think they have grown up but can't even write A DAMN POST about what they believe in an orderly fashion.

 » its all bolhocks

Its all rubbish really - we live in societys where money rules all.

I say - buy what you like and pirate the rest. I paid for oblivion for morrowind for fallout and I expect bethesda to keep em coming. However -if they release a new IP - I will be either getting a demo or a pirate ISO and I WILL test it before I give them my cash.

ITS MY HUMAN RIGHTS

THEY ARE ABOVE YOUR COPYRIGHTS NINTENDO, MS AND PONY!

If people dont buy your games and they are pirated - (is your fan base comprised of 10 year olds )- you dont deserve to make Cash. The whole point of a free capitalist society is that the population decides who wins and who looses. If no one buys your lame games and your company crashes - then welcome to Capitalism - even if everyone pirated it. You should engage with community and give people a reason to pay - even if that is extra effort. Welcome to Earth b*tches.

How comes Powerfull companies can go around the world and tax natural resources - whilst keeping populations poor and its ok.
Yet you take a copy of a game or a cd and its a crime?!?!?

Errrrrrrr........1 more time, welcome to our world.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2009-02-27
 » Nobody cares Nintendo.

"Nintendo Calls Out Brazil, China, Korea, Mexico, Paraguay and Spain"

Do these countries owe anything to Nintendo? Why are they being called out? Nintendo is making massive profits selling hardware to the people of these countries.

"REDMOND, Wash., Feb. 25, 2009 %u2013 Nintendo has outlined a list of countries around the globe that remain leaders in denying adequate and effective protection of video game products."

Many of these countries don't even have adequate protection of human rights. Who gives a s*it about Nintendo's profits in these countries?

"In its annual comments to the U.S. Trade Representative under the "Special 301" process, Nintendo has singled out countries where piracy is rampant and has asked the United States to take further steps to combat it."

Now it's the United States' problem? Piracy in China? What the hell? Our tax money helping out a company that made $2,500,000,000 last year and expects to make $3,250,000,000 this year in profits? I think I speak for most people when I say Nintendo can go f*ck themselves on this issue. Deal with it.

"Nintendo reports that piracy of its most popular products, the Nintendo DS%u2122 and Wii%u2122 systems, has increased during the year."

That couldn't be the fault of a company that slaps a quality seal on any crap game made for their system, never. This link says it all: http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/944/944828p2.html .

"Nintendo attributes this increase to the availability of circumvention devices, such as "game copiers" and "mod chips." These devices skirt the product security embedded in Nintendo's famous products and enable the play of illegal Nintendo software."

Mod chips were available on the Wii very early on. The increase in piracy is due to HORRIBLE QUALITY GAMES, the kind of games not worth paying $50-$30 for. Only a handful of titles have gotten great reviews, and they were released over a year ago. Nintendo doesn't want to admit the real problem.

"It is important for parents to note that if users of circumvention devices are children, they may be exposed to unsuitable content downloaded from the Internet and played on their Nintendo systems," said Jodi Daugherty, Nintendo of America's senior director of anti-piracy."

Now they use scare tactics to get parents involved? The parents are better off with piracy! They don't have to pay $30 for crap minigame collections anymore.

When will Nintendo take a pro-active approach to the problem and take measures to get some QUALITY games that appeal to MOST gamers in the market?

If people don't like CRAP Wii games enough to buy them, and pirate them instead, they really aren't stealing. Why? because that's money they never would have made in the first place.

   Re: victorinox - 2009-02-28
 » SAD ;-;

I ALWAYS saw piracy as a open form of Protest, and more than anything, something that shouldn't be mentioned! who cares if people pirate stuff, in the end who really loses?

enough people still buy, where the number difference makes almost no difference! most of the TOP selling games are NINTENDO's OWN, which enough people pirate or nonpirate are buying! in addition look at the PSP, how many more psp's do you think sold, just because you could softmod it to run emulators.... Piracy makes the main companies more money!

now lets look at what people are "Stealing" in this case ill use the WII

Virtual Console games: guess what, i own most Sega titles, from my gen NEW, when they were 30 - 40 usd, im not paying for them again! same with most of those games... how many times do i need to buy, sonic 3, or Mario brothers 3, before they just give me it + its just their lazy way to keep better games making them money, because i got news, SMB 3 probly took a few hours to code, and costs like 7 usd from the online shop.... how fair -.-

Wiiware: I like the theory behind it, but for the most part... its just the big names, making games for us all to play just from the wii, all of the 3rd party companies just trying are simply, making nice tries or crap *world of goo excluded*

Channels: the US, gets shafted on them, and for the most part their a scam... look at the Japanese media channel, you pay like 10 bucks for a channel, to pay more money for media... yeah -.- great... but the US doesnt get any special channels! just Japan + and even then their kinda crap Y_Y

Games: a great number of this is in my book, based off out of region games, i personally like Pa*****o games, and those games arnt comming over, but guess what the ONLY way for me to "legally" play them is to buy a jap wii, buy a 70 usd game, pay shipping and in all and all thats like 120 just to play A game, or 40+ to mod and play them all + maybe if they tried harder this wouldnt exist, in addition a lot of importing becomes Illegal anyways, like Tatsunoko VS Capcom, since a lot of companies own Tatsunoko props it was illegal to import it, so why does it matter how i obtain it its illegal anyways...

and finally on this subject, ive played 150 or so wii games, and they were 1 of 4 things....

a remake or another of a good series *animal crossing, Mario, Mario kart, Brawl, pikman, etc*

fun but amazingly short like 2 - 3 hours, for 50+ usd -.- come on.... *house of the dead overkill to get 100% took me 4 hours... come on thats just sad +*

Was fun, but bothersome to complete *like galaxy, where you had to beat everything twice to 100% it -.- get real...*

and finally, fan driven crap... like Sonic Unleashed, playing that game was a total joke....

but i digress they dont care about us, they just know we will pay, and pirates are wrong Y_Y
