Nintendo patents a new Wii controller - Image 1According to a patent filing dug up by Spong, Nintendo has a controller that hasn't seen the light of day (yet?). The patent was filed months ago, back in February, so we don't really know if this is meant to be an alternative controller for the Wii, or plans for a future model.

The design of the controller seems to return back to the days before the Wii, when the controller was a gamepad rather than a wand. While we don't know if it is indeed a controller for the Wii, the patent does describe it to have motion-tracking features, which indicates that it may at least be Wii-related.

According to the filing, there is also a gun adapter that comes with the controller. This deviates from the idea that this is intended for the Wii, since the Wii Zapper already has that function down pat. This may be an early design for a different console, or something else entirely. It's all speculation - we may never even see it hit the market. As the patent says:

Although the present invention has been described and illustrated in detail, it is clearly understood that the same is by way of illustration and example only and is not to be taken by way of limitation, the spirit and scope of the present invention being limited only by the terms of the appended claims.

If the controller does see the light of day though, at least Anascape Ltd. or any other company wouldn't be able to drag Ninty into court this time.

Looks like a nunchuck and Wiimote in one or a new gamecube controller for the Wii :S

 » Looks good...

... But it looks like they're just altering the Classic Controller in order to A) Fit the Wii Remote and B) Make it more comfortable to hold.

Don't they already have that stupid "classic" controller? Not to mention gamecube controller, wii mote, zapper, wii wheel, wii fit, etc.

I think nintendo needs more/better games than more stupid controller attachments.

 » Yup.

I completely agree... IF that is a new controller for the Wii, it seems like a silly idea to be working on it.

Nintendo really needs to get some interesting games out there for their little white box.

Now before I get the standard fanboy flogging, I've played most of the Wii games and the only ones that held my interest were Metroid, ExciteTruck and Zelda.

So the Wii needs more good games. Most of them are just too boring.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

There's a major problem with your ignorance. But first we need to qualify your comment.

1. By your comment I assume you mean to claim that Nintendo shouldn't spend time on such things. That they need to spend their time on better games.

2. If not #1 then your comment is completely off topic as usual and there is no point in replying to your gibberish.

So let's assume #1 shall we? It takes MANY to get a FEW. Not all ideas are going to be great. I can only imagine how many garbage MS and Sony ideas are laying around that never made it to light. In most cases, patents are filed via procedure alone. It's possible this controller was never meant to see the light of day. However, it still needed to be designed/worked on. Otherwise other "better" ideas might have never been developed.

Stifling innovation is NEVER a good thing. Only Hitler would do such a thing.... or a douche bag. Take your pick!

Hitler was a great man that made many contributions to the world.

Just not all of them were morally proper.

 » Ugh

The dpad and c-stick are horribly placed (far too low)
The c-stick is horrible in itself (should be exactly like the other stick)
The controller itself is horribly un-ergonomic (like the NES controller, our hands don't like cubes)
The bean-buttons are horrible (try playing Super Mario World with a Cube controller, you can't run and jump at the same time)

» not a bad idea at all!

I got a classic controller and thinking of buying that intec thingy to combin the wiimote and the cc together. If they release this I would just get this instead

Are you talking about Nyko's "Wii Classic Controller Grip" or does Intec make one as well? I have the Nyko one which can sometimes be had on amazon for $5. It's actually very useful and probably the best controller accessory for Wii that I've found.
