one that got awayEveryone's got a the-one-that-got-away story. Maybe it's a fish. A fair girl or boy.Or a great job opportunity that pays twice as much for less work and without a boss who is a product of a genetic project involving humans and pit bulls.

Now it can be told. Before the bloody next-gen console war began between the Xbox 360 and Wii, Microsoft actually wanted to bag Nintendo! According to what is now part of corporate history, MS didn't want to build a game console from scratch. Instead, the company wanted to purchase a company already in the business of making game consoles. And Nintendo was just shiny enough to catch MS attention.

"I wanted to acquire Nintendo," recalls Rick Thompson, former vice-president of MS hardware business. However, Xbox overlord James Allard decide to do the whole project in-house. We don't know how much MS wanted to pay for Nintendo back then, but should they re-consider buying the maker of the outrageously successful DS, it will burn a hole in their pockets the size of US$ 6.378 billion. That's how much Nintendo will be worth a few months from now.

But the more interesting question is what if MS did buy Nintendo? What would the gaming world be like today? For one, the on-going next-gen console war would be less colorful with one less participant. Or perhaps MS-Nintendo would pit an Xbox 360/Wii hybrid against the PS3. What about the DS and the DS Lite? What would Gate's version of Nintendo's toast of the handheld world? No one knows for sure.

Perhaps there's a parallel universe out there where MS and Nintendo did marry each other. If we can only take peek at what's driving gamers there crazy!

If only M$ bought Nintendo and shut them down for good, the world would be a better place for all gamers.

 » re: If only...

Your statement makes no sense to me, explain why it would be better for gamers.
How can more competition do anything but make others work harder? Is it because you do not like the games? That still would not make any sense, as having mario or zelda or any of nintendo's games out on the market has no negative effect on you. Also, were it not for nintendo, there would be no sony playstation.

   Re: ralph (Unregistered) - 2006-11-27
 » Backwards

Nintendo has a backwards philosophy. They promote gimmick controllers and rehashing garbage technology rather than giving gamers better graphics, HD support, 5.1 digital surround sound, DVD playback, online play, etc.

The more successful Nintendo is with their *****ty baby systems, the less likely it is for Sony and M$ to put money into all the things we want in future generations, and the more likely it is that we'll get more gimmicks and more rehashed last-gen systems from all the companies.

If Nintendo fails miserably (hopefully), then Sony and Microsoft will have no choice but to give true gamers what they want. The PS3 is by far the most impressive system ever made. Imagine how awsome the PS4 could be. Now imagine how *****ty it will be with a dildo shaped controller and *****ty graphics. Nintendo has to go.

 » re:if only...

Really? If it was so gimmick then why did sony copy it? Also, if people did not want it then it would not sell. What is a "true gamer"? That sounds a little bit like some sort of silly elitism. The Wii is a toy, BUT SO IS THE PS3. That is all these systems are. Expensive Toys. You make it seem like it is some sort of status to obtain.
"Alright! I'm a TRUE GAMER NOW! Yipee!". Nintendo is giving their audience what they want, and people buy them because they decided they want it, if it was so awful, then it would flop and you have nothing to worry about. You know what? I've seen all the tech demo's for ps3, and I am not impressed, it no longer interests me to pay a premium for the same games with prettier textures, it no longer matters. It wasn't until the wii that I actually cared about purchasing a console once again, I was sticking with the PC. People want different things, you treat it like religion, like the world is ending because nintendo exists. Oh and by the way, last generation the playstation 2 was the weakest system graphically, but I bet you don't hate on it.
The more nintendo succeeds the less likely sony and M$ can put into systems? Hello? Microsoft is pissing away money at the xbox and can do so virtually indefinately if they so please, the same with sony. If so many people decide they want something different as opposed to just blowing more cash on an updated version of what they already have, then that is democracy, you are so worried that your demographic is going to go uncatered to. Regardless of what happens, if there is a market for money to be made from and demand for something, someone will fill it. End of story. Your argument holds no water whatsoever.

Yea, but who cares about Japan? They're a very biased and discriminate people, where as the rest of the world could care less if it was MS (American) or Sony or Nintindo (Japanese). Notice how the only place in the world the Xbox isnt doing well is JAPAN? Gee, I wonder...

As far as being on topic, Im sure MS could care less about Nintendo now since theyre doing better than Nintendo is anyways, and thats WITH the japs being such tight azzes...

Just imagine if the rest of the world didnt buy Sony products just because they are Japanese. Oh wait, we already do that, but its not because its from japan, its because it sucks. lol. Anyone wanna start using UMDs or BluRay? hahaha....

Re: mr toasty (Unregistered) - 2006-11-27
» you are just plain stupid

Japanese don't like Microsoft because Xbox is such a beast. They like compact electronics XD. And the Japanese not liking Xbox is just a natural thing really, which would know better for the Japanese people? 2 Japanese Companies which have both been fairly successful in the past and know what they want or....an American one who's first entry into the market might awaken Godzilla if someone dropped it.

BTW, if no one bought Sony products then

A) Xbox 1 would have had a chance in the game market

B) We'd all still be using VCRs or some old technology.

Face it, Sony HAS been a huge developer of electronics, because they helped develop the DVD format, CD format, and invented a commonly used type of Television. Give them some goddamn credit.

and i can really say Im glad they didn't. I'd rather have two kicking systems than one that is either really good or sucks. right now I feel like no matter what mood I am in, there is a game(system) Ill enjoy picking up sitting in my living room.

I find it funny that most Sony Fanboys don't know how the Playstation came into existence. Nintendo's biggest rival is their own creation. Besides, Nintendo would NEVER sell to another company, especially a foreign one.

The reason the Xbox isn't doing well in Japan is becuase there are no games that appeal to that audience available for the 360. Nintendo and Sony are both Japanese companies so they know what Japanese gamers are looking for.

By the way ralph (post 3). You may just be the most ignorant person to have ever posted on QJ. The winner of this console war is chosen by the gamers. If the Wii wins, then a majority of the gamers do not care about graphics and would sacrifice it for new ways to play. I would hardly say Nintendo is holding anyone back, MS and Sony are free to do what they want.

So your only interested in graphics and power? Wow, you are just a complete arsehole. WTF is wrong with you? If you only care about graphics and not gameplay then you are an idiot. The graphics on the Wii are incredible and the reason why us Nintendo fans are true gamers is because we care about the imagination, creativity and innovation in gaming. We're not stupid *****ing Sony fanboys that only care about *****ing football and driving games. I bet you'll buy a PS3 when it comes out as well. Good luck with it. I hope it explodes the minute you get it out of the box and a bloodbath ensues.

wow, you nintendo fanboys are really tripping out over one obviously ignorant comment. you're probably getting so defensive because you know you have a technically inferior system, and don't want to admit that it's a bad thing. not that i don't want a wii, but i still think its BS for nintendo to release such a minor hardware upgrade to the CG now, and still have it cost only $50 less than the far more powerful 360.

Re: The Unbiased One (Unregistered) - 2006-11-27
 » Agreed

When I first heard that the Wii did not have much better graphics, I almost flipped. Although I strongly disapprove of the term "GCN 1.5", graphically speaking, it is. Nintendo delivered what they promised with the controller though.

I don't know why most people are saying graphics and power are the way to go now - the PS1 and PS2 were the weak compared to others in their time and they won those rounds. Somehow I don't think the pattern of weak consoles winning will change... yet (you never know).
Back to the topic, I hope Microsoft won't buy Nintendo - the games industry will crash (not saying gone forever, but won't be as big as today) because of no existance of a proper hardware game company. And thinking of Master Chief in SSB... *shudder*.
Oh and for you Sony fanboys, even though it was mentioned before, just remember how Playstation came into existance - so if no Nintendo, then no Playstation. Don't want that now do you? ;)

Re: mr toasty (Unregistered) - 2006-11-27

ralph...u really need to quit being such a *****head. let us ninty fanboys have our Wii. And, looking at your words, you obviously are either gay, or like the Wii, as you want a dildo shaped controller. your logic makes no sense....more power, less fun new ways to play? so, as long as it had "HD support, 5.1 digital surround sound, DVD playback, online play, etc." you would buy Pong over the Wii? o, and may i point out the Wii's FREE WI-FI!!! another thing...look up Exciting witch trials...its a game for the Wii in japan...and its AO...hardly for kids.

 » Nintendo isn't worth 6.378 billion.

they're worth more. A LOT more. They forecasted 6.378 bil in net sales for next year.

If Microsoft would only need to pay a measley $6+ billion to acquire Nintendo and crush them out of existence, they would've done it faster than you can say "DLL hell".

» wii is worth a try

Damn, you people should be nice to nintendo fanboys, theres console's been practically dead after REV 4 came out. Now on topic id say if MS bought nintnedo it could come out good if MS just gave cash to nintendo and they did stuff their own way while having a powerfull system and MS adding connectivity with other windowns devices. But if MS stuck their heads inside nintendo id say it would fail miserably.

Now on the 3rd post isue, i wouldnt say nitendo is promoting a gimmick it seems quite fun, while i wouldnt buy one just yet id love to try one out. While for me the ps3 is probably the only console ill buy, i do admit thet if I see a wii at a bargain( around 0) price ill have no problem picking one up just because its a fresh experience. But I wouldnt give up the games ive come to love from playstation on something thats not fully proven.

 » Why all the arguing?

Isn't there anybody here who isn't totally biased in favor of one system/company over the other, or at least doesn't seem to hate other systems/companies just because they like one?

Trust me, it IS possible to like all three companies and all three of the new systems. You all need to pop some Ritalin, chill out, and play a board game or go outside so you remember that arguing on the Internet is stupid, pointless, a waste of time, and all manner of other things that don't matter in the slightest.

 » The Japanese

The Japanese are not bias toward xbox or microsoft they are simply waiting to see some good Japanese games on the system. In Japan 3 types of games sell the most, those are Action, Rpg and Sports, Xbox 360 is not selling well because there is no AAA Japanese games for the system, now that has changed the recently released dead rising is doing well in japan, also konami's winning eleven soccer, and with the upcoming lost planet and blue dragon being released before the end of the year along with good third party support, microsoft has the 3 genres covered and then some. Proof is in the sales, xbox 360 has been selling roughly 2000 units per week since launch, the playstation 2 in comparison sells roughly 20000 per week (1:10) just recently xbox 360 sold 6500 units in a week (1:4) a big improvement in my eyes, why?, because the AAA Japanese games are finally coming out.

 » Completely wrong

Every company with anything INOVATIVE to offer is the one that got away...
RedHat Linux "got away"
Apple got away, and poor Zune sales and slowing windows sales will show this more and more in the future. Macintosh is getting HUGE.
Computer Associates "got away" too, as did Mozilla Firefox which is killing Internet Explorer more and more every day.

What DIDN'T get away?
PS3? December of Businessweek seems to suggest (an article also in FORBES) that Playstation 3 will dominate the market as PS2 did.

   by Mike (Unregistered) - 2006-11-28
 » yah...

Well Macs=*****... Its not Inovative its CRAP.

Personally I chose the Wii because I already have a powerhorse computer why would I want another one? Thats all the PS3 and X360 are. The Wii is different and when Im not playing DDR or BF2 Ill wipe out Zelda.
