Wii - Image 1

We can all agree that the Virtual Console channel feature of the Nintendo Wii is awesome, as it lets us play the games of old in their purest, unadulterated forms. This is, of course, after a quick and easy purchase from the Wii Shop Channel, via electronic credits called Wii Points.

But did  you ever stop to think just how much Nintendo's earning from this neat little service? If you have, then good news: it seems that ol' Nintendo is actually raking in a lot of dough from the Virtual Console channel.

So, just how much is Nintendo earning from Virtual Console downloads? Try JP¥ 3.5 billion (US$ 33 million approximately). This figure was revealed during a recent press conference held by Nintendo, with the figures popping up in the middle of a Q&A session. Nintendo executive Shinji Hatano was in the hot seat then.

Despite the rather large figures, it seems that the company doesn't quite know what to make of it. Shinji Hatano himself said that Nintendo itself is "currently unsure if this is a lot or low." He did end his statement by saying that a figure like US$ 33 million is, in itself, not bad. We'd say so ourselves, if we suddenly got a check with that much penned in.

» They never said it's a bad thing

What it means is they're unsure whether the channel is performing well or not.

Theres not really anything it can be compared against, which in business is really the only way to tell how you're doing. There's the XBLA is the closest, but they're not that similar really.

» Profit off nothing? This is worse than the music industry!

Come on everyone, punish Nintendo for not developing any new Wii games for you by downloading free Roms!

Just look on google for ROM download sites.

They've made enough money by re-selling old stuff they already made money on!

I'm boycotting Nintendo products and I always play old downloaded Nintendo ROMS on my PSP. It reminds me of when I was young and Nintendo wasn't so greedy and worthless!

Just look how Nintendo treats you, their fans:

Hey "Mr sense" ur link dont even work...and how exactly is nintendo worthless? They innovate more than any single game company out there. If it wernt fer them everyone would just play violent wars shooters....i like a shooter like any other guy but weres the difference in gameplay?! Nintendo basically does any and all platformers!

 » I disagree

I think Nintendo has the attitude "milk anything for everything you can." They sell it initially, make millions of profit, then years down the road repackage it and sell the same thing again. Sometimes they do it 3 or 4 times. How many GBA games were SNES games or even NES games? How many Wii games are Gamecube games? The Wii is a Gamecube with minor tweaks. The virtual console is Nintendo's response (in typical lazy Nintendo fashion) to XBOX live arcade. Instead of NEW games or seperate emulators for different real arcade games, they just made emulators for different consoles. Then they charge more than the used original games usually cost on cartridges.

Nintendo doesn't innovate anything, they simply repackage and resell everything. They didn't invent the Wiimote technology, it's been around for years. Touch screens have been around for years before the DS as well. Everything else is at least 6 year old technology (if that new) and hardly innovative or impressive.

Nintendo sues sites that let people download their ROMS because they're protected (probably becaue they overcharge for them now) but I have quite a collection already.

It's too bad they don't focus on delivering new quality games and share the old classics like some less greedy software companies do.

 » WEll..

Well downloading Roms is "Illegal", it is possible that some people don't want to break the law (I could care less), why not re-sale your stuff? I mean if the public didn't want it, they wouldn't buy it, but the public does want to buy it, so why not sell it. I myself have downloaded some games just for the sheer ease and convience of not having to fish around the internet for a ROM, download the right emulator, hack a PSP, MOD a system, not to mention find a sutible PC/MAC controller (unless you want to use a keyboard).

Nintendo doesn't force you to buy these, I have tons of friends that don't have one single VC game. I would rather pay $5 to just sit down on the couch, download Ninja Gaiden, flip my Wiimote sideways, and fire it up in 5 minutes....

 » amen to that

why nintendo is doing so well is because they are a business that focus only on one thing that is video games un like sony who makes tvs, blu gay, dvd players, and microsoft who makes operating systems, and mp3 players, and BBBIIIGGG COMPUTER TABLES!!!

 » Uh yeah get ready...
