Nintendo: We are very confident the Wii has a solid future against 360/PS3 - Image 1

David Yarnton, general manager of Nintendo UK, was recently interviewed concerning the success of the Nintendo platforms, the Wii and the DS. Yarnton talked about the future of the two platforms and how they'll stand up to the test of time.

One can only wonder how the platforms can keep up their momentum. The Nintendo DS, for example, has enjoyed high sales in Japan for a long time now, but sales declined heavily last week for some reason.

Yarnton explains that to keep the momentum of the DS, Nintendo UK will be focusing on creating new software titles as well as building on existing franchises. They have releases from franchises that they believe will be a "chart presence" for years to come.

As for the Wii, Yarnton remains confident of its success in the future, saying that it is still strong in both the hardware and software market:

Wii is still in high demand and in the space of twelve months we have become the top selling ‘next-gen’ format with the highest installed base in the UK. This is due in part to the fantastic content we have available for our systems, and from the strong ongoing support from third party publishers. We are as confident as is possible that Wii has a solid future.

When asked:

"What do you think are the key reasons that Wii and DS have been such a success?"

Yarnton starts his response with:

"We have been very lucky... " then the usual corporate lies. At least the first part was true!

"How do you intend to keep up the momentum?"

Yarnton: "It is very important that we try and satisfy existing demand, some of it still latent demand from Christmas, so we are continuing to bring stock in as regularly as is possible as the demand is still huge on a global basis."

A good response, keep that demand up whichever way you can, whether purposely limiting manufacturing, storing it in the secret warehouse, and making BS excuses about it.

Yarnton: "In the UK we are continuing to work on further improvements with logistics and in addition we also have a fantastic line-up of new product to release that includes Mario Kart and Wii Fit."

And then?!

NO AND THEN! Nothing else even worth mentioning. Improvements with logistics, WTF?

Yarnton: "But also we have ongoing titles like Brain Training, More Brain Training, Sight Training and the overall Touch Generations range that maintain significant chart presence weeks, months and – in the case of Brain Training – even years after release. So the focus is on both new software titles and existing ‘older titles’ that still have huge potential at retail."

All these highly touted training series games, yet none on money mangagement. Bad idea to waste $400 on a console that's worth $150, for instance.

"Are you concerned that Wii might not have the same kind of longevity as the likes of 360 and PS3?"

Yarnton: "Wii is still in high demand and in the space of twelve months we have become the top selling ‘next-gen’ format with the highest installed base in the UK. This is due in part to the fantastic content we have available for our systems, and from the strong ongoing support from third party publishers. We are as confident as is possible that Wii has a solid future."

Next gen format? Where did that come from? Is the PS3 now in the next gen with the XBOX 720 and PS4 because of the new Dualshock 3? What a joke! "Fantastic content" is purely an opinion, from recycled gamecube ports, uninspired mario sequels featuring new spherical worlds, and false advertising products claiming to improve fitness shouldn't be included. "strong ongoing support from third party publishers?" OH MY GOD! When was there any decent third party games? The wii version is always the worst, and any exclusives have terrible reviews!

"One criticism of Nintendo consoles is that attach rates are lower – how do you respond to this?"

Yarnton: "We are still very early into the life-cycle but even so we are seeing the attach rate increasing all the time. As we bring new users to video games we are creating future potential and as new product is released that provides innovation and appeals to everyone, we will see attach rates grow even further."

Total BS answer there. Basically saying the attach rate started at 1 with the included wii sports tech demos, then very gradually is increasing from there (as high as 2) as people realize no decent games will come out. The games people want will not be there, so the overhyped games like mario and sonic olympics will have to do even though they suck.

The Wii cannot and will not keep up this sales momentum. The games are much worse than the Gamecube's were, which was considered a failure and finished third place. Third party is not interested in it. The controller's appeal will wear off and has limited uses. The graphics, sound, online, storage, features, and processing is completely inferior to both competitors. In short, the Wii is a sales fluke that will end quickly and these corporate guys make up lies to hide that.
