New Wii Drive Revision Kills ALL modchips! - Image 1

Nintendo continues their war against piracy, arrrrr. See that big hole in the Wii drive there? Yeah, that's where the old drive controller chip used to be. They've revised the design of the Wii drive to render all current modchips completely useless. Sucks for "backup"-ers who came late to the party then.

From what early reports indicate, this new Wii without a chip on its shoulder has not been widely distributed yet. This model was found in an Australian console. Here's what the folks at Modsupplier was able to learn from it:

What they have done is combine the old D1A and drive controller chip in to one which is now called the GC2-D3, as you can see from the photo there is a big blank space on the PCB where the controller chip used to be.

[...] It could possibly be a few months or longer before it could be figured out as it’s a totally new way of handling drive function, that's just our guess and maybe they will work it out faster. This is all speculation of course for now, but we can see the first generation of chips for these drives being a high wire count such as the D2CKey when they were first released.

The Wiikey team is currently trying to figure out how to work with this new drive. Seeing as how their measures against piracy didn't seem to work with Wiibrew, or even the new DSi, it probably won't take long before pirates figure out how to chip this unchippable drive.

 » so?

This is how Nintendo has been spending the money that should be allocated into making quality games.

Crap games, quality security should be Nintendo's new motto.

Either way, it's only a matter of time before this drive's firmware is cracked.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Nintendo has made just as many FIRST PARTY quality games as everyone else.

Some would even argue that Nintendo has made more quality games then Microsoft has made for their 360.

The problem is YOU don't find any of the games to be quality thus your dumb ass opinion is BIASED.

» Ninendo is INNOVATING, and protecting their console

The Company wasting their time blowing security out of their butt-holes is Sony, who have sports games and First-Person-Shooters.

Nintendo just wants to try to stop people from pirating on their console. If you don't think Sony is freaking out, just wait til someone does something against them. They even stopped BD-J Homebrew jus because they're that paranoid

 » What about it?

I don't use Modchip, I use the backup loader, so if that stops the drive from using Modships, that doesn't matter.

Although No body said it works with the Backup Loader....
no body has confirmed yet the opposite.

'Sucks for "backup"-ers who came late to the party then.'

Hardly, since it doesn't take a modded drive to use the backup loader ;)

Rather you little kiddies like it or not piracy does hurt the game industry. I realize typical modders use mods mostly for homebrew or import based games. But there are people that solely mod a system to play burned games. However regardless of the success of the wii I don't feel that most of the games that are out appeal to the hardcore gamer. I hate the fact that most games try to initialize the awkward clunky wii remote rather then just letting us use the gamecube pad or the classic remote. I do realize a few do like re 4 which is also on gamecube ps2 and pc. Having said that there are but a couple good wii games out there I would like think most people with a modchip own orignal copies of the 3 good games that are out for the wii I don't think I have to mention them

LOL yea i agree 100%
there are like 7 good wii games
the rest are pointless unless youre a dumb kid that could be playn 360 or dat triple.
Other than that it is not worth getting free wii games. If you do youre only going to play them like once because the games calm music will put you to sleep. Those are not video games, You dont beat them you dont master them. You just play them as if it were a toy. Those are just applications. I had a wii and got rid of it for a 360. ps3 woulda been great too. Little kids do not know what they are missing. No this is not my opinion it is a rock solid fact! Nintendo is loosing it unless they knew about the economic crisis beforehand and decided to focus on a new audience to sale video games too which resulted in more money. Other than that the games still suck. Redsteel should have been online. Aww yea. but nintendo always leaves out the good features.

You can't blame the Wii's horrendous game lineup on piracy. Nintendo's Wii strategy has always been focused on cheap Gamecube ports and pointless minigame collections.

Piracy increases due to the fact that these games are not worth paying $50 for 18 month old games.
It's not worth paying $30 for rush job minigame collections with $10,000 budgets.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

That's funny because, I don't own a single gamecube port for my Wii.

Seems to me you are LYING once again.

then you must own all pointless minigame collections.
