Guitar Hero Outsells Rock Band Almost 3-to-1 in November - Image 1Have music games struck their last high note? Sales numbers indicate that music games are past its peak, as analysts have been predicting recently.

According to the sales reports from November, sales of Guitar Hero have declined. Rock Band managed to grow, but since Guitar Hero whipped its opponent in terms of sales, it still fails to spark hope for the music genre.

For November, Guitar Hero (360, PS3, Wii) overall outsold Rock Band by 2-to-1 in terms of dollars, and 3-to-1 in terms of units sold. Its half-hearted success though, as explained by UBS analyst Ben Schachter:

The biggest concern around Guitar Hero has to be the fact that Guitar Hero World Tour (12 SKUs) declined 48% in units and 31% in dollars from Guitar Hero III (6 SKUs) on a year-over-year basis.

This will fuel concerns that the genre is past its peak. With Activision and others sure to bring new innovation to the genre next year we can't count it out, but it almost certainly won't be the growth driver it has been over the past two years.

Which doesn't mean that the music genre is about to die off anytime soon. It's just over the hill. The NPD Group's Anita Frazier gives her two cents: "The music / dance genre is [still] very, very strong and remains one of the leading causes of growth in software dollar sales this year." Well sure, considering you need to buy the peripherals along with the game.

 » well

The article was kinda vague - goes Guitar hero mean the entire series of games out now or just WT? Cuz WT sucks. Also - with RB2 - I just got my game disc and an extra guitar - why but the whole set?

Lastly, I'm tired of these dumb articles. Just tars spewing crap.

» Guitar Hero World Tour costs $190.

All of the other Guitar Hero games cost $60 and that is the reason why they arent selling as many. I think the biggest problem for GHWT is that you cant by the drumset separately and are forced to pay the full $190 if you want it. Everybody who plays these games already has at least one or two guitars already so if I want the drumset I am stuck with another guitar I dont need. RB lets you by the drumset separately if you dont want to buy the guitar too.

 » it doesnt matter.

I already have GH 1, 2, 3, and RB1, 2. Im getting GH4 for Chirstmas. Screw the sales figures. Both companies have a crapload of loyal fans who will continue to buy DLC as well as games and instrument add-ons, so yeah.

 » DLC

Speaking of DLC, does this include sales figures from the xbox arcade or playstation network? People who can't afford to buy a whole game (shock + horror) might still be purchasing song packs to enhance their currently owned games.

On the other hand, I am starting to feel a little overstimulated by the pace of Guitar Hero releases and will probably get the next Rock Band to have DLC for the Wii so I can play more songs without changing discs.

I don't think those sales figures counted DLC. Harmonix has earned about $2-3 million off of all the DLC they've released so far. Not sure about Neversoft though.
