Shigeru Miyamoto - Image 1Innovation and fun, that's always been the words associated with Nintendo's consoles, the Wii and Nintendo DS. Top man Shigeru Miyamoto himself has always stood by these words and in a recent interview with Weekly Famitsu he reasserts his views on how games should be enjoyable to the casual gamer as well as the hardcore gamer.

One of the more dominant arguments against the Wii is that while it does invite in the casual gamer - anyone who can wave a stick can play the Wii - it does alienate more experienced players for its lack of hardcore games. Miyamoto says this shouldn't be so. In the interview, he expresses how games should feel more like games and are fun for the sake of having fun.

The fact is, I don’t think there is such a wall between both audiences. While there are indeed games designed for core and casual markets, core users are also enjoying casual gaming [...] I think the future is games that are not difficult and yet very fun to play. [...] What I mean is that there is no point in making a difficulty level the fun factor of a game.

His comments were focused on Super Mario Galaxy, which he describes as having all the elements needed for a fun pick-up-and-play experience:

We need to release more games which feel like games. It is important that people who are playing them feel that the games are indeed fun to play [...] Should it be fun by only playing it a short time, this indicates already it has a big value as a product [...] It is very important that the full fun of the game is being felt in the first stage 1-1.

He's talking about fun and I will add that a hard game can get lame such as metroid prime ds (could never finish, got stuck). The game has to be enjoyable and dude, why are you playing coocking mama for, dont buy games you're not going to like. Fun is in mechanics, fun twists in levels, and just having a smile while you play, not yelling and getting frustrated over and over. Nintendo is doing things in games I only thought as a kid that were mere fantasies. The wii is the beginning of the future of virtual reality, a 90's kids videogame dream, a 2007 dream come true.

Keith if you had a brain, you would understand that what Miyamoto is trying to say is, any person should be able to pickup and play any game without any difficulty at all.

What he doesn't mean is games should be a piece of piss to complete.

On the wii your gonna have two types of games;

1. Games that are aimed at casuals

2. Games that are aimed at both

Super Mario Galaxy is a game that is aimed at both, easy to pickup and play, but difficult to complete. And by complete I mean get all 120 stars, and everything else.

i hope he still makes some hardcore games... and i hope they dont make hardcore games into games that are way to easy like twilight princess (every other aspect of the game was awesome but the combat was boring except for like 2 fights in a 50 hour game). its not difficult to add a hard mode guy.

If Wii, PS3, and the 360 were all the same then it would really make no sence for 3 diffarent consoles to exist. Buy the one that suits you and lay off the other. If you say Nintendo is for kiddies then so what, video games ARE for kids, not exactly for fat old guys who go to conventions. Videogames have been for kids since the start and us teens enjoy them but we should not take away their games. I personally like almost every game because I actually give them a try. Matter'o fact I will give Halo 3 a spin before I say if its good.

This doesn't sound too good...especially the part about the difficulty.

Now while I can understand where some of you are coming from with difficulty problems, we really need hardcore games from Nintendo (or at least Miyamoto) that are the SAME difficulty, or HARDER.

Please remember, that Miyamoto's games in the past have had a fair amount of difficulty, but not anything that is way too hard to complete. So I'd give it an "average" rating on difficulty. Im just afraid that with that comment it's an excuse for an even EASIER game, which is bad.

I can only hope for a nice challenging Galaxy game, I mean games can go down big time because of difficulty, I mean Wind Waker and Twilight Princess were (for the most part) easy as hell.

Of course fun factor is arguably the most important part of the game (I think so) But that doesn't meen you should dismiss a good difficulty level which I'm afraid Miyamoto is saying.

I totally agree with that last post. Games are made for kids, but not like 5-6 like people think they are. Kiddy is an over exerted statement. Wii games should be known as Casual. Not kiddy. Since what has been said, that Nintendo is focusing on Casual and Both, then why not say Wii is casual? Whats wrong with that? Everyone thinks that 360's and PS3's are so much better, well.....since when have you seen your mom excited about ANY of the games that are there on those? Well, NEVER! Right? Am I NOT RIGHT?! I know I am. Cause the games there are focused on the adults. Since when do Adults have time for games? Some one tell me please.... What I mean by that, is if you have 600 dollars to spend on a system, good for you! But for us "kids" (i use the term lightly) we enjoy being able to sit down with our family, and have fun. When I played GameCube, I stayed locked in my room for hours on end. Playing what you ask? Metroid Prime. Of course!

So the Wii has given me a chance to catch back up with my family and actually get involved with them more. Cause I know that if I had bought a 360, or a PS3. Yeah, I would still be locked away in my room. Spending hours trying to get past the first stage of Gears of War.

Now, i must take leave, and go hang out with my family and have some fun. Later N00bz!

Well I think he has a point. Its good to have games that are fun but I like to be challenged in things like boss fights and such. Theres a satisfaction that can only be achieved by knowing you just did something hard. Thats why I say all games should have a difficulty setting to satisfy those out there who like to be challenged as well as others.
