Shane Kim - Image 1Microsoft corporate VP Shane Kim loves Nintendo. Sony, on the other hand, seems to be a different matter altogether.

During the recent Play conference at the University of California at Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, Kim said that it never pays to bash the big N as it has managed to broaden the gaming audience with games like Wii Fit.

"I can tell you how that conversation goes at Microsoft. They say, 'I don’t think that’s a game,'" he said. "But the guy at Nintendo says, ‘I don’t care. I’m selling a whole bunch of that stuff.'"

Kim also said that Nintendo is showing Microsoft what it needs to do. I guess one thing Microsoft learned is that avatars can be a big hit. That's one of the new features that the New Xbox Experience will bring to Xbox 360 owners on launch day, November 19. His take on the NXE? "God willing, it will work."

As for Sony, Kim said that the costs of the PS3's Blu-ray player has given Sony a handicap in the console wars. Digital downloading of movies to the Xbox 360 would likely prove more important than Blu-ray in the long run, he added.

The spirit of oneupmanship also came to the fore at one point. Asked how long Microsoft plans to keep making Xbox 360s, Shane said, "One day longer than the lifespan of the PlayStation 3." So, ten years and a day then?

 » Stupid Shane!!

he doesn't know what he is talking about, he doesn't have any facts on why the 360 will last longer than the ps3, i think he just can't admit that the 360 can't last longer than the ps3. i guess he is saying this because the 360 sales are high now a days, well u know what, sony has something up there sleeves too and that is worth a wait.

 » Well

Blu-ray did give Sony a handicap but does give PS3 gamers an experience of a lifetime. MGS4 wouldn't be possible(unless u want multi-disc) if it wasn't for Blu-ray. We are in the generation where it shouldn't take 3 discs to play a game. And the upcoming K2 and Heavy Rain will make people realize the potential of the PS3 and Blu-ray.

What a bunch of crap that this guy said.

I bet that by 2010 there will be talk about the new xbox already.

 » ughugh

well the fact that they want to release the 720 soon im pretty sure hteyll jsut bail out on the 360 like they did to the xbox.

finally xbox needs the handicap of releasing their console earlier to gain a market share, im kind of curious how the outcome would be if all 3 systems were released around the same time. too bad it wont happen n e more but we did see the early entrace from xbox was due to fear, and it did stirke them with the RRO.

o well competition is good, and smart move by not bashing nintendo even thogh ive lost interest in that expensive" board game" of a system

I hope they bail on the 360 when 720 comes out. Who wants resources wasted on the inferior console when they can go towards the new one.

how would you feel if you recently baught a 360 and the 720 is released 1 month later and than xbox decides to quit it support on the 360

Downloads cant replace bluray for another decade or so.
I want high quality HD now.

MS is just mad that like Wii's non-games, Bluray is something that Sony makes money off besides games, and that they tried and failed at the same thing (HD DVD)

   Re: teh not so 1337 g@m3r - 2008-11-17
»  failed at the same thing

HD DVD was Toshiba dumbass. Microsoft just chose to use it.

And what do you mean "I want high quality HD now."? 1080p downloads are only like 7GB. Netflix on the 360 will allow you to stream it. AKA it's instant to watch.

Seriously, get your facts straight before coming back.

   Re: kopicha - 2008-11-17
 » g@m3r

you fail.... 1080p streaming can never match 1080p playback from blu-ray in overall quality (both picture and sound). its been proven before. so seriously you should be the one to get your facts straight before coming back. telling me they have no difference only shows you are blind or deaf and needs to have a health check done from your doctor.

i highly doubt that you broadband wouldnt need a few pauses during that stream 36-48MBPS

M$ did have a share in HD-DVD because of the HDi technology that was the equivilent to Blu-Ray's Java. M$ developed HDi and besides they indirectly make money off of Blu-Ray because of the VC-1 codec that is used

Whats the big deal about multi disk games anyway?

so what if you have multiple disks, once you install it all to the hdd would it matter anyway?

   Re: kopicha - 2008-11-17
 » its a big deal

installing over 30gb of data for 1 game. no thanks... and i believe you are referring to installation for 360. for that case meaning you need to buy additional expensive hdd from m$. thats another big epic fail from you. the largest hdd that m$ has is 120GB. so meaning 4 of those games and you are done with everything else.
   by ShadeyProphet - 2008-11-17
 » @ kopicha

gaming habbits. most people I know play a single game or at most two games at a time,
What would be the point of leaving games installed that your not playing at the time?

just keep the save files and move on to another game.

hdd's are made to be writen and rewriten to many many times. so I still dont see the big deal honestly.

Well i'm playing 4 games at the same time at the moment and soon 5 once Prince of Persia comes out. Having a game on multi discs depends on the game. Sure a RPG can use multiple disc no problem, but what about a game like GTA4? or Fallout3? For those games to get bigger you're going to need extra space and it just won't work with multi discs, because you can't switch discs when you travel to a different part of the world in those types of games.

   by ShadeyProphet - 2008-11-17
» 5 games at the same time?

I dunno maybe people do play that many games at a time,

I was never able to play like that. I like to find a decent game and immerse myself into it.

kind of like if a person was reading moby *****. why at the exact same time would they be reading the catcher and the rye, alice in wonder land, and the holy bible.

It would seem that all the switching back a fourth between them would kind of kill the enjoyment of all of them.

   Re: Datnizzle - 2008-11-17
 » In your earlier posts...

You forgot about the 360 arcade owners, which is why M$ can't require you to save part of the game on hdd.

   Re: Tyrant156 - 2008-11-17
 » ....

Well 3 of those games are SC4, Little Big Planet and Resistance 2. So its easy to just in and out of a online game and not have to invest much time. The fourth game is Dead Space and i've been playing that the most. Playing them all at once is a lot of fun though cause you don't get bored. Oh and I'm in college so I'm forced to read 4 and 5 books at a time. I'm just use to it.

 » for a new xbox...

built in wifi, no hardware failures, easily upgradable hard drive (like PS3), and a better storage media than DVD for games (thats not a must though) and I'll be happy when the new xbox comes out.

 » thats if

the thing is if u have a home theater and i mean a kick ass home theater the 360 is your second best bet to buy. i dont know why they make it sound like blueray is a wast of time if it has a way higher market share then dd right now. dd doesnt even have a 1% market share and its been around longer then blueray. it isn't like sony doesnt have a video store either and for me i would rather rent blueray movies then having to wait 2 hours to dl a hd movie that is only 720p and crapy sound they try to pass as hd.

u cant even buy movies on live and even then its not worth it because i would rather have it on disc. the 360 is not reliable enough to buy movies on and i cant imagine having to download everything all over again if the hd goes out(on either console or pc).

The state of Blu-Ray isn't that great. I think it's great that the PS3 fanboys have gotten behind it, because really they are the only ones keeping it alive.

I totally undertstand why you stick your noise up at digital downloads. The quality isn't quite as good yet, no physical copy, large bandwidth required, etc.

However, digital downloads are seeing greater growth then Blu-Ray. The amount of big companies that are investing in that area and growing rapidly. Even blockbuster (a big Blu-Ray supportter) is going to be releasing their own set-top box for digial downloads. All media is going to be accessed through the TV in the future. It's where we are headed and it's already happening now.

As for PS3 games vs Xbox 360 games, even the most impressive PS3 games this generate could be scalled back slightly to run on the 360. Third party games are very tight on both systems, so the advantage of a slow reading 50GB disc is not as huge as people first predicted to be.

   Re: sycoblast - 2008-11-17
 » not to be rude

but i rather own physical ownership of a angible product, than own a digital copy.

PROS about blu ray disc
1) owning a hardcopy looks great to ur collection, (you cant put a digital copy on your shelf
2) make copies, to ur protable devices

 » well...

"Digital downloading of movies to the Xbox 360 would likely prove more important than Blu-ray in the long run, he added."

Why can't Sony also do downloading movies as well? I have both and I found that Sony really doesn't offer too much downloading contents. It has well less downlaodable games compare to XBL. But why? Also they don't even care about releasing the PSN card in Canada. I currently give in using my credit card but as soon as the PSN card is available I will remove my credit card from my PS3. With that said... how many kids in Canada don't have a credit card to put up or can't have one to put up? At least for 360 you can get the point card to buy stuffs and it is much easier and SAFER then putting up a credit card.

In conclusion, saying that MS can do download content is such BS! I don't see Sony can't do that in PS3. I just don't understand why Sony isn't more aggressive in the download content part.

   Re: sycoblast - 2008-11-17
 » uhhh

sony allows you to download and purchase movies ( i believe theres a viewing limit) however the xbox you have a 1 time shot only

   Re: c74gta4smash - 2008-11-17
 » >>lavino

All of your info is incorrect. when was the last time you used your PS3?

You can buy stuff from PSN with PSN cards. Both LIVE and PSN have cards so where are you getting this credit card 5hit? Go to blockbuster.

Second, PSN has a video store in PSN. Just press R1 or R2 in the store. PSN lets you KEEP and TRANSFER your videos. LIVE only lets you rent them for a one time view, Lame.

Third, LIVE has been out for 5 years now. That's 3 more than PSN so it's only obvious that they would have more to download. This is the same LIVE that was on the original XBox.
Common sense.

   Re: BiigBiscuit - 2008-11-17
 » @c74gta4smash

Check your facts first, when was the last time YOU used a PS3.

Canada has not received PSN Cards.

Only the US has the video store, not Canada.
R1? R2? WTF?

Common sense!

"Both LIVE and PSN have cards so where are you getting this credit card 5hit?"

Eh? You can use a credit card on PSN. I have mine linked and all purchases get billed straight to my credit card.

Yes I've been aware of the Credit card usage for PSN as well. It was the words and tone inwhich lavino was using. It made it seem as though there were no alternatives to a credit card.
I'm making it clear that there are PSN cards in stores.

... and the Sony execs think Microsoft is their handicap, by spamming the media with useless biased insights.

If you're in an area with no cable broadband, the best you can hope for from copper is around 40Mbps in the medium future... seeing as blurays allow video of 54Mbps, they will always win because they provide a steady stream of higher quality footage. Not to mention hard disks need to reach more than a few TB at a low price before people will have enough space to fit the same amount of HD content (1TB = 20 bluray disks)

   by the by - 2008-11-17
» digital downloads will not be of any use for years

i would rather have something physical in my hands in the way of a disk, than get it off the internet!!

your computer/harddrive goes down and you've lost it, having to a) pay for it again and/or b)have to download the whole lot again taking up serious time and bandwidth!!

1. I think it's funny that they can claim, "O Hai!, We can't do shlt about Nintendo's lead so we'll say we like them and look like nice guys!", "As for the PS3, our current competition, we say we hate them."

2. If the PS3 is so handicapped then how has Sony sold MORE units per year then Microsoft?

Hummmmmmmmmmmmmm.........

firstly for the love of god ISO haven learn some new words to start your sentence other then wtf.

and secondly why are you guys giving this Shane Kim the time of day he can say what he likes fact is blu ray has won the format war and will replace all other formats by 2011 fact so why waste your time even reading this article when the outcome of this generation is so obvious that i don't even need to say it.
