A chart showing the Nikkei dot net poll results - Image 1

Where exactly do consumers stand with regard to console internet use? That's exactly what Nikkei.net wanted to know, so the Japanese business site administered a poll to consumers in order to measure both their console internet use within a six-month period, as well as their console internet preferences.

Here's what Nikkei.net found out: data showed that the all the Sony PS3, PSP, Nintendo Wii, and DS showed drops in online use from June to December of last year. According to the poll, Microsoft's Xbox 360 showed a .1% increase in online usage from June to December.

Furthermore, the Nikkei.net poll results showed that majority of the Japanese respondents used the Microsoft Xbox 360 for online gaming and system updates. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Wii garnered the biggest percentage for purchasing games online, for browsing the internet and for browsing various channels such at the Weather Channel and the News Channel.

Based on these results, it would seem that Japanese consumers use different consoles for different needs. Still, the dip in internet use across almost all major platforms may indicate that consoles are not the consumers' first choice at all when it comes to going online.

I love one comment from kotaku:

"BY TYLAHEDRAS AT 01:05 AM

360 usage went up by 20%! From 5 people to 6! HOLY *****! IT'S AMAZING!!!!!!!!"

lol
Still, it's normal that they'll pop online differently on different time, it just depend on the new titles. I mean, they have dynasty warriors 6 and it doesn't play online right? Also, when Devil May Cry 4 will pop, the online activity in US and Japan will drop of at least 5%, lol. But when warhawk popped in the US, online activity increased a lot (at least 5%) on the ps3. Same will do for resistance 2 on ps3, same same did with halo 3 on x360 (for this one, I'd say an increase of at least 20-30%, lol. Especially since the game sold consoles a lot).

Yeah thats a great quote and exactly what I was thinking.

Also... the Wii and online... is prob the download of virtual console games (nes,snes,n64) cuz gawd knows it's got nothing to play online for any amount of time/fun.
