'Iwata Asks ' interview with Masahiro Sakurai, designer of Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Image 1


With just a couple of weeks left before Super Smash Bros. Brawl goes live, game concept designer Masahiro Sakurai discusses some of the fun game modes that will be included in Nintendo's highly anticipated fighting game.

In the latest installment of the "Iwata Asks" interview conducted by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, he opened the discussion by talking about the online capabilities of the game in line with the company's WFC service.

Online matches were basically divided between your Friends List or between random opponents available on WFC. Sakurai explained how the game's mechanics of online play was actually planned ahead of Nintendo's WFC service. Although, both Iwata and Sakurai were both pleased with how the online system for the game meshed so well with the WFC's own.

Sakurai then described the online play for Super Smash Bros. Brawl as highly competitive and rather select, considering the more casual gamers can't exactly derive a lot of pleasure pulling their online ranking up. Because of this, he proposed breaking up the community of players into smaller groups so everyone won't be overwhelmed by the number of online gamers fighting for their spot in the ranking.

Putting it simply, he explained it by saying:

For Smash Bros., there are small communities here and there where there’s fun in winning and losing, even when there are more skilled players than others. But if you make an environment where everyone is trying to climb their way to the top of a single tall mountain, it’s clear that the people having fun would be limited to a small number of individuals.


They also talked about the many other game modes that players can expect to see when Super Smash Bros. Brawl becomes available this February. The mechanics of game modes such as Versus, Co-op, Share, Stage Builder, and Spectator mode weren't much different from QJ.NET's previous coverage of the said features.

Although, he did mention that the main reason in creating these features was so that players can have just as much fun participating in online matches as well as sharing and watching other players enjoy themselves.
