Modern Warfare 2 - Image 1

Not Wii graphics.

In a time of high-definition graphics and consoles that can give PCs a run for their money, the Wii has stood out as the little console that could. In the face of developer Infinity Ward's drive for bigger and better cinematic gaming experiences, however, it's the little console that couldn't.

Speaking to trade mag Develop, Infinity Ward's Robert "fourzerotwo" Bowling candidly revealed that the Wii's hardware just can't deliver the kind of console power they're looking for, hence the decision to stay out of Wii development.

"f we felt like we could deliver the cinematic experience we were going for on other platforms, then we would gladly move to that platform," said Bowling. "Right now, we don't think the Wii can deliver the exact experience that we’re doing. We like to be very equal across all platforms, and if it’s not equal then we won’t do it."

So maybe when that Wii HD Pachter keeps talking about comes out then? It's worth noting that Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is making an appearance on the Wii, however that version is being done by fellow Call of Duty series devs Treyarch.

 » I don't want equal,

I want games tailored to run well on each system that works with each console's strengths and weaknesses.

And you can have a perfectly ok cinematic experience on the Wii. If the PS2 could do it years ago, the Wii can most definitely do it today.

Blah, oh well.

» I have to disagree with you

Play gta vice city on ps2, then fire up a game of bioshock on pc high settings.

That's what youre looking at with Wii vs an HD home gaming PC differences, more or less.

That's only a small part of it too, look at dead rising on 360 vs the wii version. and a good (but expensive) gaming pc can surpass a 360 any day.

Some games just can't be scaled as easily or run as efficiently from a disc as opposed to a hard drive.

take DOOM3 for instance. Great visuals for its time (still ahead of anything the Wii has ever produced) and yet it is one of IDs WORST games they ever made.

Yes Bioshock's visuals help the game's atmosphere, but I never had any problems with Prime's graphics concerning the exact same matter. Now let's take Eternal Sonata, the game is truly majestic, a game with some of the best visuals I have ever seen (give me this over GoW any day) but really it does not come even close to the "crescendos" of Final Fantasy VII or even Chrono Trigger for that matter.

You see graphics can make a difference, but the game needs to be great as well and to be honest, while the Wii is filled with shovelware, the other two twins have got generic shooters and GTA clones that can only boast dozens of millions of polygons and special effects. At least with the Wii you play games like you have never played before so at least for me that has given this console the edge over the powerhouses.

» Moving on to more talented developers please

Well since MoH Heroes did it pretty well with controls superior to your game's console versions, then I would have to say that if you need bump mapping to immerse the player into a modern FPS, then you need to realize you fail as a developer. There are people out there who can still do wonders having next to nothing spec wise and those people can be called talented. You on the other hand...sadly not. In other words, just give me a suitcase full of cash and I can make you a CoD clone no problem.

Also as someone who could barely tolerate the splinter cell plot, Modern Warfare's story was simply ATROCIOUS. Let me give you a reminder, that (for lack of a better word) idiot called George W Bush is NOT the president of the USA anymore and you need to address that to your future games.

Just watch Gundam 00 if you have run out of ideas plot wise (yeah because that's the only aspect you can't come up with anything new lol)

I don't remember any IW game or Tom Clancy game or any game for that matter using real people including presidents. In fact, most don't real countries or factions, AND explicitly express that any similiarities are coincidental as per their disclaimers.

If your suggestion to IW is to turn to an 20+ year old cartoon about robots for "new ideas" then there's no point in even addressing your rant. Also, to compare the Splinter Cell and MW plots are moot; especially if you think SC is better written than MW (you do know that Sam Fisher was in his fifties and retiring at the end of part 1, right?). My thought is why critique a developer and genre you don't even care for?

Its a shame the Wii has a processor from a washing machine :|

"I don't remember any IW game or Tom Clancy game or any game for that matter using real people including presidents."

See this is why I don't really like gaming fora. I need to fully explain myself since quite a lot of people are unable to think for themselves. I am talking about MW's plot being one of the worst cases of Ameican PROPAGANDA (who said anything about real people?)

I have ever seen in a video game. Then again if you live in the US and have republican views, there is a chance you may not understand this, but really having the paper thin plot of "the US invade a middle east country in search of the rebel forces and the way it is even presented in the game's introduction is too republican if you will.

As for Gundam you are wrong. The series just had its 30 year anniversary but ignorance is not bliss since you are unaware that in the last decade, the series are not connected and while there are similarities, the Gundam series have become VERY political lately. From hidden agendas, men appearing as saviors, even paramilitary groups sworn to end all war (Celestal Being - Gundam 00) with different factions having different goals, you see for a fictional war FPS game, they can have a hell of a better plot than this piece of junk.

As for SC, the games are not focused on war, but the possibility of war with the main character being an agent rather than a whole country's coalition to another country. So while not the complex plot I would expect, it sidesteps the propaganda quite well. On the other hand stuff like metal gear are too much so I would like for a plot that is something in between and less politically incorrect.

Y'know, I was following you when you were talking about the graphics part, but then it all seemed to fall apart after that...

"See this is why I don't really like gaming fora. I need to fully explain myself since quite a lot of people are unable to think for themselves."

...and maybe you should make things a bit clearer when you talk about them. What you typed up there concerning G.W.B. could be interpreted by others the same (or similar, or different) way Daistaar did, ya?

   by Ryosuke - 2009-11-05
 » right...

ok let's patronize for a bit. Since the "WAR" in Iraq began, a vast number of people NOT living in the US, were talking about this being a joke. A lot of non US gamers have been talking about how war FPS are being used as a form or propaganda where everyone living in the middle east is a terrorist and it is the brave USA who has to come to the rescue of everyone else on this planet. So these people could figure what I said out pretty easily.

However had you not paid attention to this whole circus and how espionage and war games plots are just too damn familiar to what the Bush administration was feeding the public, then of course you will lose me. By the way I am not saying there is some sort of conspiracy here, these developers are just taking advantage the little kids passion for war and they are trying to make it as realistic as possible (saying all that crap that any resemblance is coincidental - yet they say MIDDLE EAST!!)

All I am saying is that since the public is beginning to wake up (I hope they do) then MW2 should have a VASTLY improved plot over this crap they have on their previous game.

 » also

I used 498 words to explain this so may I ask, since I have observed that many gamers are turned off by posts over 2-3 lines, how many people actually bothered to read it? This is why I am trying to write as little as possible (along time constraints of course)

   Re: Daistaar - 2009-11-05
 » Propaganda?

@ Ryosuke

I understand what you mean now about the Bush thing and those are two well constructed breakdowns. Had to definitely acknowledge that I do like your above observations. I have to disagree somewhat as I don't think the portrayal of the Middle East is terrorist-laden in video games. I think it can be easy to do, but I seem to recall us still battling Russians and Nazi's in a vast number FPS titles. Unfortunately that whole world police aspect is real and is the UN's doing as they are the first to turn to us. I don't believe every game is "America's Army" but I see the similarity. I don't know if it's a modern day Crusades but I can see the whole US + Good, Mid-east + Bad perception that is evident. I don't see where party lines have anything to do with public perception of the war though? Are you saying that Republicans see it as a liberation and deliverance and as Americans we're oblivious to the way the world views us? Sorry I had gotten lost there. I agree that Devs are using the current climate (which is very marketable) as a ploy to sell content, but I think it's simply a desire to turn a profitable title and not have people jumping out of planes into enemy soil. I actually commend IW for being so graphic and showcasing the true horrors of war as a deterent to endorsing war. I don't think it's a matter of turning a blind eye or being oblivious to certain world subtleties, but I take it at face value; a video game that I'm going to enjoy as a little escape, between work, study, a wife + family, and everything between. It's either that or I'll have to grab the axe and knife and chase down old ladies lol.

As for Gundam I wholeheartedly admit to being ignorant as I have not followed the series, at all. I know it's roots stem a long way back, but I didn't realize it surpasses me by a year. I'm more of a Silverhawks / Bionic 6 kinda guy although Gundam has awesome Resin Kits (which is the extent of my knowledge unfortunately).

I'm not big on the Splinter Cell series but I agree that IW has to step up the game with MW2 as there are already a huge amount of eyes on this title.

As for the Wii, I like the system and wish there was less shovelware for it. If it weren't for HBC and emulators, I'd have no need for it. I can see why devs don't wanna use it as it's underpowered but your 110% right about graphics not being too necessary. The IW statement about not being able to convey emotion on the hardware was balls. Super Paper Mario was cute, awesome gameplay with a pretty engaging and rich story, as are the Zelda's and a number of games. FF7, still a huge title today, had very blocky graphics, but it was the story that captured everyone. I can seriously get into a good game of Suikoden anyday over Dragon Age or Enchanted Arms. I can understand IW saying it doesn't fit their needs for this particular title, but if they were to ignore the console altogether that would suck. Someone should show them Twin Snakes on the Okami Gamesphere. That was a beautiful game and shows the Wii is more than capable hardware that can deliver a beautiful cinematic experience.

@Lazyboy256
Thanks man! I'm glad I wasn't the only one who it that like that lol!
