But... why?

Uh-oh.

After having just found out that Best Buy employees have been ordered NOT to sell whatever Wii units they've got in stock, and after all those stories of hoarding that have been going around, it seems that another retailer, GameStop, may have picked up on the idea as well.

According to the people from Kotaku, a call to a GameStop branch has confirmed the suspicion that the sale of one of this season's most popular items is being tightly controlled and timed. They found out that the store they contacted actually had six Wii units in stock, but the employees were not allowed to sell these units until December 17. Until then, they would have to turn down everyone looking for a Wii.

This might just be a business move to pick up traffic and drive the frantic Christmas-shopping masses to distraction, but still, isn't it all just a teeny bit unfair?

 » Not just Units

Ive also noticed that they have been ordered not to sell any accessories as well... Including the Component Cables...

I went to the 4 Best Buys in my area trying to get the Component Cables... At first i asked a manager if they had any and he said no and that they would be expecting them on Sunday (hint hint)... I smelled BS so after a few minutes later i asked a younger employee and he said yes but they aren't allowed to put them up till Sunday... I followed this same proceeder for the other Best Buys and 3 out of 4 of them said they had them in stock but they weren't allowed to sell them till Sunday... Kind of blows since i don't feel like climbing over people just for a bunch of cables...

» Release of all that is fun

I am not whining...but really, why not just sell everything as it comes in instead of holding merchandise for some kind of riotous behavior destined for the local news. Seize the day when a clerk at the electronics desk of a big box store seems to control supply...and demand. One told me the other day that he plans to just throw them all out on the floor of the store the day they are authorized to release them and watch the flesh fly.
Just sell it all so that we can go on to baking cookies...or whatever. :)

 » Microsoft to reap benefits!

I've noticed over the past few weeks as I was hunting down an extra Wiimote, a strange trend among these retail chains. All of them have tried to push the 360, games and accesories upon me instead of the elusive Wiimote. It makes sense to hold back on the cheaper console. Since the Wii has a smaller library it makes sense to push the more expensive one with alot more extras that they can tag on to the reciept. Think about it, an uneducated gamer or giftgiver goes to find a Wii a week before Christmas and low and behold there are none! However, the friendly, cheerfull, obviously expert of this field, sales associate recommends the more powerfull graphically enhanced 360. You know the one with it's impresive library that is sure to please any well behaved demanding gamer.(yeah, maybe a handfull of good titles) Can you hear the "cha ching" now? Most holiday shoppers will grab what they can. The retailers know that the Wii will sellout anyways so why not squeeze out that last bit of money..errm holiday cheer of the helpless consumer.

Happy Holidays!

» Confirmed. Gamestop hoarding Wii units 'til Dec.17

A Gamestop employee had a revelation after finding himself cornered by two man who saw the UPS truck pull off from the gamestop store and demanded their Wii's. I happened roll up at the scene to kill some time. It was the lone employee, the two asailants, and me, when the employee finally defiantly revealed that they were hoarding Wii units until Dec.17, as commanded by headquarters, and to follow suit with big box stores and their Dec.17 macabre Wii plans.

» Circuit City told to do the same

I work at circuit city, and we have 2 cases of Wii's in the back room that have to be held until sunday's flyer comes out.. the computer even locked them out from being able to be sold until then. so there's many retilers doing this... we even did it last week because sundays ad has them in it and we are required to have stock on sunday.

» It's more than just the flyer

They hold them until the flyer comes out on Sunday. They dont want to get busted with a bait and switch lawsuit, so they hoard them until the flyer comes out. If you think about it, it's only fair. Why should they sell to some schmuck who just happens to be there when the UPS truck pulls up? Thats not fair. If hes really hardcore he will wait like everyone else at 5 in the morning on Sunday waiting for the store to open. Get it now? I hope so.

 » I can confirm this.

When I bought my Wii at EB Games (which is now part of GameStop), they told me they wouldn't be selling any more after that until the 17th. They also said that they didn't even have enough units of ... well, either the Wii or Twilight Princess, can't remember... to fill the pre-orders. Sucky.
