We've seen a supposed hack that allows the Wii to run backup discs before. This time though, we've found a hack for the Wii that looks far from a hoax. This latest "workaround," the gamecube games to be played on the wii">Wiinja modchip, is from a group that reportedly call themselves Team Ninja.

The chip requires soldering to the Wii's inside for it to work, hence the air of legitimacy around it. The modchip should allow for GameCube backups to be played on the Wii. However, it only allows backups of the same region to play on the Wii. Below are a few images of the chip, including a rough installation diagram for the chip.

For more information on the chip, you can use our read-link below. It should lead to the original post on the ElOtroLado.net forums. It's in Spanish, so you guys might need to run it through an online translation engine of your choice. It is estimated that when this chip hits the market, it should cost around €40 (US$ 52).

For demonstration of the chip in action, just click play on the video embed below.

There is maybe a gameplay of zelda, but can you proove that he really put a burned dvd in it? look carefully at 1:05 to 1:02

could be a fast exchange, just we will wait until something is coming out

as it said on the screen Zelda! as in the wii game zelda RETARD!

 » Hmmmm ...

if this is fake, then expect something like this to surface for real, probably sometime in the near future.

at the recent hackers symposium it was revealed that a similar back door has been found that was present on the gamecube. this backdoor allowed for backups to be played but doesn't allow for more advanced features like dashboards, etc.

in theory, all that is needed is for a small micro-controller to be used to sense the proper timing to send the correct debug commands to the onboard dvd controller.

that being said, the pin numbers listed on the install diagram match up perfectly with the Microchip PIC12C508 micro. The picture of the modchip itself, is also of the same packaging that the 12c508 comes in.

that being said, *if* this is true and *if* they are selling them for , then someone is making a *hell* of a profit because I can buy this micro for about in bulk pricing.

hmm i don't see any Blue LED turned on the drive when he inserted those DVDs... strange eh? and no green light on niether.. hmm

   by Nex (Unregistered) - 2007-01-27
» Eh? Some here are a little blind.

1) If you actualy view it. The first disc was not accepted all the way into the drive door (snaged maybe?) Either way the disc was forced out and re-pulled in by the wii since it did not sucessfully pull it in the first time.

This does not disprove the the modchip (again pay close attenion and you will see the disc was not all the way in before the drive did that).

2) Kenji, WTF are you talking about? The zelda he ran was the Wii version (there are dumps out on the net). If you read the text closefuly it says press A & B to start. Only the Wii version does this as the gamecube version it is just start button (I own the cube version). Second another indicator is when the disc channel would show a gamecube image if booting a gamecube game. It does not, it insted shows zelda info insted. Only wii games can do this (not gamecube games).

Personaly I dont know if it's real or not. Either way we will find out soon enough since release is on the first of febuary. Just gonna have to wait and see.

on the zelda one it looks like he just shows the bottom of the disc, as far as i can tell so that could be anything

Uhuh, has anyone tried to goto www.wiinja.com ? Its not even a friggin' registered website ! You would have thought someone who made a breakthrough like this would ACTUALLY have a website up advertising the product or something, why the advertise a website address if the site doesn't even exist?! I wouldn't hold your breathe for this one folks...

Alright smart guy so you found an address, have you tried putting the website into your browser? Still doesnt change my original point, why advertise a website address as your own if you havnt actually got a site up...

Did you type wiinja.com or www.wiinja.com--the latter works, whereas the former does not.

 » hmm...

wow i wonder what the tape in the VCR is for...

   by Aaron (Unregistered) - 2007-01-27
 » seriously

The tape in the vcr proves nothing. you can tell its loading the discs from the first 20 seconds. the first disc gets caught in the drive when going in, then sucks it back in. you can not account for this happening if you are using a video tape to make it look like your using backups. It would have screwed him up with timing if it were being faked by a vcr.
i dont even think the tape is pushed in the vcr unless the door is missing on it. if it were loaded into the vcr you wouldnt see the tape at all. even if the door was broke off you only see about 20 or so percent of the top of the tape. You see clearly almost the whole tape.

Now the thing is, how do you rip the discs to burn them?

   Re: Calum (Unregistered) - 2007-01-27
 » XD

With gamecube you had to have a certain game that went online and then set up your ip with a spec DNS so it sould connect to your pc instead and rip them like that

sheesh.

 » Not fake

Nah it aint fake, when he starts zelda and actualy presses the wiimote buttons you can here the sound from the wimotes speaker of the sword....

he couldent have used the tv/vcr to record that sound.

 » wiitards

you friken wiitards its obviously real

1. He counldn't have used the vcr cus you wood see the tape
and its timing would be off cus of the first disk not going
in properly

2.Nobody and i mean NOBODY can put a real wii disc so fast that you wouldnt see it or else teh wii driver wood break

3.ITS A REAL MODCHIP WID A WEBITE PPL! GO TO www.wiinja.com

   by Tha_king ;-) (Unregistered) - 2007-01-28
 » No Panic!

Hello.

Im from Germany and to clear some things up and cool things down Im going to explain a little about the chip.

Nothing that isnt published already but again:

1. Modchip is real. A local Store is selling those chips already. Working. With 2 years warrenty (guess the USA dont have such stuff but never mind)

2. You need an unscrambled Copy-iso of your legally bought game burned to DVD-R, DVD+R quality media.
For those who dont know what legally bought games are, wikipedia! ;-)

3. NO Regionfree until now. And the Chip itself cant be upgraded. But it is soldered with only a couple of wires and big solderpoints. Easy to change to a later model.

That was it from the cloudy germany. Hope it does help.
Im thinking of getting one, but I think I want to wait for a region free version. PAL Games suck...

PEACE
