Cliff Bleszinski - Image 1

We've already seen various example of successful shooters that integrated RPG elements into the gameplay such as BioShock (PS3, Xbox 360, PC). Cliff Bleszinski thinks this isn't just a passing thing. He believes that RPGs are the future of first-person shooters.

“I had a conversation with Harvey Smith – one of the lead designers on Deus Ex – and said to him the future of shooters is RPGs," the Epic Games design director said in an interview with Develop. "He said he completely agreed.”

So, does this mean that the Gears of War franchise will eventually dip into the RPG well? Bleszinski remains a bit ambiguous on that point.

"It depends on where things go. I mean, one could wean that from the comments I made earlier about the future of shooters is RPGs and see where things are going with us.”

As long as they don't go anything like Fallout 3 (such a *****ing terrible game), this is fine by me.

 » thats you're opinion

Just becuase you do not enjoy a certain game don't say it was terrible. you most likely did not The elder scrolls series either.

I personally love the way fallout 3 and oblivion are represented. This is hopefully not what he means but maybe more of what resistance 2 Co-op is or just the abilty to customize your weapons, speed, etc.

 » Fallout is terrible?

It's IGN GOTY maybe 'cause u think its long and boring. And how the article not mention Fallout it combined fps and rpg to its max as of yet.

   Re: Master Chef - 2009-07-07
 » nope

Fallout 3 is amazing, you're wrong.

LEAVE FALLOUT 3 ALONE!!!

Anyway I really hope they make more games like Deus Ex, System Shock, Fallout etc., with the RPG elements. IDK if I want all shooters to be like that, but certainly more of them. Really hoping they don't mess up Deus Ex 3 too

@joebo19x

Yes, I know it is my opinion.

Also in my opinion, The Elder Scrolls series is great.

Fallout 3 started getting boring after awhile.
IMO Oblivion was alot better.
could also be because Fallout 3's textures and world we're too bland, and the side quests we're sub-par.

 » Preach it, Cliffy B.

I just spent several days helping a pair of friends troubleshoot System Shock 2. I kept telling them 'Don't worry, it'll be worth it! Trust me!'

It did not disappoint.

Looking Glass... I know you're 2k Games now, and I know you're working on Bioshock 2 and 3... But could you throw us die-hards a bone and re-vamp System Shock 1 and 2 with an updated engine? Maybe even throw in that 3rd game that EA tried to screw up?

I was also pleased to hear that interest in Deus Ex 3 has been somewhat revived thanks to Squeenix's takeover of Eidos. DO IT. Make a cooperative multiplayer. Recreate the experience of the original as best you can and add co-op, and the gaming world will beat a path to your door.

 » sad

placing level ups or upgradeable items in a shooter does not make it a RPG, Stop trying to Butcher Role playing games.

the So Called RPG games of today have gone WAY down and i fill so sad for the kids who think that FF12 or FF:Crisis core was a RPG =( you can't make a 3d action adventure game and try and call it a RPG.

And i am sure some Kids are going to try and comment back on that But the truth is the truth, the Newer final fantasy games are NOT true RPG games.
(lets just hope 13 and 14 will be)

   Re: JOshISPoser - 2009-07-07
 » you're right

i mean, they aren't true rpg's, but they are part of the broad spectrum or whatever. at it's core, an rpg is a game where characters level up and there is a lot of customization.
it's just difficult these days i think to make an rpg with our technology. it is just very time consuming or else it'd be crap in today's standards

   Re: truk - 2009-07-07
 » ...

you do know that rpgs started as some dudes with dice and an their imaginations?

so, technically, any video game with rpg elements is butchering rpgs; even final fantasy 1

   Re: zzk2001 - 2009-07-07
 » wrong

Just because RPG started with bored games and their imaginations does not make just them as RPGs.

RPG games stay within the tactical solutions and strategy fighting only with getting the right equipment set for your guys attributes.

Running around Swinging a Sword like a chicken with his head cut off is NOT a RPG no matter what BS items you try placing in the game.

   Re: Csyrah - 2009-07-07

I would have to agree. Theres games that are RPG like... but they dont quite feel like an RPG. Out of all the games ive been playing lately, the only one that felt like a real RPG was Neverwinter Nights 2. Btw, Fallout 3 was an amazing game IMO, I spent way too many countless hours and going to sleep at 5am on that game. If a game can make you stay up until 5am every night, I think it counts as an amazing game (personal opinion)

   Re: GUNBEHINDTHESUN - 2009-07-07
 » Csyrah I agree

Fallout 3 is addicting. Anyone who says Fallout 3 isn't a role playing game either doesn't know what a RPG is or never played Fallout 3.

   Re: genesiscopy - 2009-07-08
 » lol~

IMO, rpg is a wide category. heck, even racing games that provide arcade-ish upgrades is considered an rpg, u play a role of a tuner-class, or muscle-class etc etc.

On a side note, FO3 is cool, although not as large as oblivion (largest single-player rpg ever, lol) and the fps version of it is kinda nice addition (although invites hate from some purists)

there is also so many different interpretation of rpgs, like wizard of the coast rules, and jrpgs each have their own rule (or gameplay), although imo the ones mostly following the 'origin of rpg' right now is ad+d-ish games like nwn2.

 » Rpg

Was have been a RPG fan all my life from starting out with bored games to NES,SNES and Playstation and many other systems,
But for the past few years now they have gone off track on what makes a good RPG and i mean a real RPG not some MMO or FPS:RPG or any of that Crap that just tries to be a RPG and fails in the End.
IDK maybe i am just to Old school but the big thing that has been pissing me off is final fantasy, It has turned into just a big joke now.

"Just because RPG started with bored games and their imaginations does not make just them as RPGs."

or really? you could have fooled me. doesnt this statement just contradict what you just said? so why is your "rpg" more of an rpg?

"RPG games stay within the tactical solutions and strategy fighting only with getting the right equipment set for your guys attributes."

oh really? and this is not found in any other games except rpgs? so i guess when in bioshock you equip the shotgun with electric rounds because you know that it's the best weapon to use against a big daddy and that if there's five other guys in the room all attacking you at the same time, a good STRATEGY or TATICAL SOLUTION is to deal with them first like maybe shocking them, freezing them, using bees to distract them--so is this an rpg? it sounds like based off what you just said.

what i'm saying is, if a rpgs can evolve from dudes-in-their-mom's-basement-rolling-dice-and-talking-all-old-english-like to final fantasy 1, then why can't ff1 evolve to what ff12 is or to what bioshock is?? i'm also saying youre a TOOOOOOLLLLLLLLL!

   Re: zzk2001 - 2009-07-08
 » just dumb

truk everything your trying to say makes no cents.

1. i never said The old bored games are NOT RPG but that does not mean a Video Game is not a RPG as it follows the same Rules for being a RPG

2. if you can't simply understand that then I don't know what to tell you.

3. NO picking the so called right Weapon in Bioshock is not called STRATEGY or TATICAL SOLUTION, Hell you can beat that game with the *****ing handgun if your skilled. Unlike with RPG games where you MUST pick the right stuff on the right guys.

I can only guess that your maybe 16 or around that age thus why you don't fully understand real meaning of RPG, But yea i was never attacking you or what you think about games I was only stating my Opinion of the matter.

   Re: zzk2001 - 2009-07-08
 » And a Tool?

Do you even know the meaning of that word LOL

How is My opinion of how a Real RPG game should be make me a tool?

If one just takes what he gets and does not think for him self Is a tool.... Meaning... you your self for just taking the crap giving to you makes you the Tool +P lol but yea whatever..

   Re: truk - 2009-07-08
 » err..

"1. i never said The old bored games are NOT RPG but that does not mean a Video Game is not a RPG as it follows the same Rules for being a RPG"

ummm yeah, again, how is your "rpg" more of an rpg??? if you say it's because of strategy, tactics, finding the right combonation of items to beat the bad guy, i'm going to say this again, BIIIIIIIOOOOOOOOOSSSSHHHHHHOOOOOOCCCCKKKKK! and i dont care if it is possible to just beat the game with the handgun, which would probably be about the hardest thing cause, have you ever played bioshock? try beating a big daddy with just a handgun; i'm sure you'll find that you run out of bullets really quick. and you know what, that means *****, cause i could say that you could beat any of the final fantasies with the original weapons. hell, i beat final fantasy 7 using the joke weapons without auto-phoenix and knights of the round. so youre argument is fail.

"I can only guess that your maybe 16 or around that age thus why you don't fully understand real meaning of RPG, But yea i was never attacking you or what you think about games I was only stating my Opinion of the matter."

yeah cause we all know age determines your knowledge of videogames or of anything for that matter... ugh...and if that isnt the biggest tool comment i've ever seen...keep eating what they feed you

btw, rpg+role playing game. role playing games are games where one takes a role of a character and controls them based on specific characteristics of the character and laws of the governing world where focus is made on character development.

WIN TIME!!! cue victory music!

   Re: zzk2001 - 2009-07-09
 » ooo sorry.

Maybe if you where just a little smarter you would have understand that me guessing your age was for What games you may have growing up with NOT your experience with games.

Again is looks like you don't understand the very meaning of the word Tool, And your Win at the end just proves more to your age. +/

A FPS game will never be a RPG and why (sadly) i do see that some of the points you make May hold water BUT it's like saying a gun can be a hammer just because the gun is heavy and able hit a nail.

Again I don't know how my opinion has gotten you so hot headed over something so dumb as what makes a True RPG, kind of sad really.
