Atari founder calls games today trash - Image 1Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari, has been called the father of video games and is credited with the creation of the coin-operated video game Pong. This iconic figure in the history of gaming was recently quoted by Electronic Design as saying, "Video games today are a race to the bottom. They are pure, unadulterated trash, and I'm sad for that."

Of course, he didn't say that without justifying it. He pointed out that people could use more social games and that a lot of video games today are very isolated. What Bushnell wants to see is more group-oriented games where families can sit down together and play.

He notes that this is very important since it represents good mentoring time for families, something that doesn't happen anymore. It's no surprise that in one of our older articles he said that he is actually intrigued by the Wii and believes it might expand the market beyond hardcore gamers. This might also be the market that he wishes more game developers to pay attention to.

In fairness to the video game developers, they have been making moves to create more family-oriented games, in addition to the genres that have gained acceptance over the years. While Bushnell probably knows this, it might be that he feels there should be more support towards family-oriented gaming than what we currently have on the market today.

 » oh please...

I don't mind when people comment on the video game market in any way they please, this is one of their fundamental rights. However it bothers me when some of those people are given credit when they deserve none.

This guy is Atari's founder, that is correct. However let me ask, who was REALLY in charge when Atari was dominating the US market? Where was this guy when that giant managed to collapse in JUST a few years time? Maybe he was too tired so he was taking a break, living his luxurious life, confident that he got rich. In fact he was rarely in his office and when he did invest on quite a few ideas after selling Atari, all of them bombed. In order words...ANYONE can get lucky once but you need to be able to keep it up and CARE for what you have created in order to be considered successful. Hiroshi Yamauchi made some criminal mistakes as well, he has absolutely NO idea about games but he was a true businessman and he DID care for his company like no other individual.

So tell me, is David Sheff telling the truth when describing the rise and downfall of Atari with a non existent president? How can you have any idea about games?

 » well

to quote the great Bob Dylan

And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

This man should just keep his pride and keep his mouth closed. He may have had a hand in starting this industry, but it is far beyond his scope now.

 » so stupid

So RPGs are trash now? Wow, wat a great mind! I suppose that when his kids do a drawing, he see it and say: "Man that's trash", lol. Anyway, it's stupid to think this way, I hate MMORPG and every other online only kind of games (BUT conter strike, and maybe warhawk). I better like single player games or games that have the two modes (like motorstorm) so you can play single till the tracks are really hard, then, after loosing a race, you go online and finish 1st! :D

Anyway, I'd stop playing videogames if we could online play "social games". I wanna have fun, with a story driven game, not a stupid "friendly game", I don't need this to make friends, lol. I wanna play games for fun, not "to talk"! man.

Anyway, QJ shouldn't have posted this "crap talk", it was a waste of my time to read this...

 » Awesome

FINNALY! somebody said it! about time! now can we kick the movie business back where they belong, hire up a bunch of 6 year olds for ideas, and start making real games again? While I don't agree with the causal games part that he says, most games are crap these days, wait...make that all.

» So why are you here?

Clearly nothing this gen appeals to you since you think ALL the games are crap, so there's nothing for you in today's games, which make's it strange that you're here reading and posting on a games forum.

If you don't like games, then please shut your mouth and stop looking at GAMING DISCUSSIONS.

His comment is true... look at pong, pacman, astroids, and zelda... all of those original 8-bit games could keep you busy for unlimited amounts of time... now games get boring after a week or so, because you've done EVERYTHING there is to do in it!!

The classic games are 100x better then what we have now.

» Well there's an easy solution for you

Don't play today's games, just stick to playing the classics instead for all your gaming fun.

But then I have to wonder why you and Swizzler121 are here, since you don't think much of today's games. :|

There are still awesome games made now, eg. Oblivion, KOTOR, Mass Effect (soon...), Assassin's Creed... all of those are awesome games... but I am just agreeing with the fact that there is too many games now that you can just blow through them in a matter of hours, leaving you with not much... All of the other crap where he dis's hardcore gamers and stuff is all crap though, and I will say that family-oriented games do suck balls...

 » If you play Mgs4

im pretty sure you can be intrested through the whole time playing it.

Omg wait did you just say that??? Pong is a original 8-bit game that can keep you busy for "unlimited amounts of time"? Im sorry but pong dosnt even have a story to it.

You see games changed a lot. There becoming more like books. Theres way more to them than winning or loosing, now theres story too.

» It depends on how you look at it

"but I am just agreeing with the fact that there is too many games now that you can just blow through them in a matter of hours"

True, but many of these games also have an online component which could "keep you busy for unlimited amounts of time" against other gamers. For me, it's far more satisfying playing against other gamers online than spending hours trying to beat the highest score.

I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy getting the highest score for games in the past, but for me it soon gets boring repeating the same thing over and over again for hours on end in the hope of beating the highest score.

I also have a problem with the comment "The classic games are 100x better then what we have now."

There's always a tendancy for people to look back at a so-called golden era where everything was better than today, but for almost every 'classic' game you could think of, they were the minority in a market filled with crap. We only remember the classics because they were the cream of the crop and so live on in our memories, whilst all the crap of the time is quickly forgotten.

So I don't accept that games are any worse now than they used to be, except for some looking at the past through rose-tinted spectacles.

In fact, I prefer today's games (and I've been a gamer since Pong in the 70s), and I much prefer the online component and even achievements seen today over the score based structure of the past. :|

 » Just wrong

Theres no doubt that the classic games will be fun forever, but you can't call a game pure, unadulterated trash because it isn't a family game. Assassins creed? not gonna be trash. Neither is Mass Effect. Zelda games are definitely not trash. The Elder Scrolls series is awesome too. He's just so wrong. I can't picture my family mentoring as we played a game together. It'd just be trash talking all around. Not "see son, if you don't look both ways before crossing the street, you get crushed like that frog." :-D OK maybe it wouldn't be like that, but still, I disagree with him completely.

with all do respect to the atari guy, i think hes just a Wii fan

 » This is madness?

I suppose some people are incapable of understanding that Pong was a phenomena, not just a game. It was the void of nothingness that made relatively simple games, where Nolan Bushnell rose from, great. Now, that void has been filled with ideas, genres and titles in a much more competitive market, it's not possible to amuse the general public with two bars and a ball. Sometimes companies have to get by with games that merely meet the par, which involves a hell of a lot more man-power from a number of different departments.

As far as party games go, while they do snare the essence of fun and frolic, there are very few party-ish games that have depth, the Smash series withstanding. I wouldn't want a game market populated with games that only require finger-strength and the ability to masturbate a blinding speeds.

 » .

All Atari games as well as systems are and were trash for the last 30 years. So are Nolan's business ventures, and the reason he's broke now.
An obsolete hardware system like the Wii with new controller isn't going to expand the market like he thinks because the same type of games can easily be made for other systems. Atari systems have always had inferior hardare to the competition, so no wonder he's a Wii fan! Atari 5200 sucked compared to Colecovision even though released later. Atari 7800 sucked compared to the NES even though released later. Lynx was decent because it wasn't developded by Atari. Atari Jaguar just plain sucked.

 » if anything

He should have chosen to go off on this rant like 10 years ago...before XBL and PSN. I think video games are more sociable now than they have been for years. You can choose between people coming over the play or playing online while talking to them. And the Wii...as sorry as it is, is fun in a group setting.

This guy is just upset that pretty much everything he's done is left in the dust. And for the record...those old games are neither 8 bit as many here have stated...nor can you get unlimited entertainment from them. Back in the day, yea, but with things like the net and video games with more than 2 colors, they're nothing but a novelty to put down after 10 mins.
