Danny Johnson, the Guitar Hero Phenom - Image 1Said to be the hardest song to play on Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PS3, 360, Wii, PC), the heavy-metal shredder "Through the Fire and Flames" by DragonForce was no song for the average gamer. 14 year old Danny Johnson from Grapevine, Texas set a new world record in that very song during at a media event sponsored by the Guinness World Records 2009 Gamer's Edition.

Scoring a whopping 973,954 on Fire and Flames, Danny broke the previous record of 899,703 held by 17 year old Chris Chike. His strategy includes well-timed usage of the Star Power to optimize his point gain. At the event, he played the first 3,558 notes of the 3,722-note song perfectly, until his streak ended when the blue button on his peripheral broke under his frenzy. Apart from an old Guitar Hero world record, Danny also broke 80 peripherals in the last nine months.

it's a slow news day today, but that ought to be something for guitar hero fans..

   Re: Matt-N - 2009-02-08

I don't get why people write comments like that!

This is a site for news and stories of the gaming world, and this is such a story!

For Guitar Hero players, this must be interesting (though I play a REAL guitar... Gibson Les Paul, if you're asking!!!).

   Re: Artemisk - 2009-02-08
 » double !!

I agree with Matt-N, stop whining. Would you rather have no new news or have this story? It's about gaming so don't complain.

I doubt anyone saw it.

baseballkid7 from scorehero.com FC'd this song and got 987, 874 points on it. Just over iamchris4life's 987, 786.

The record books have lost their credibility. After reading the last Gamer's Edition I found a lot of mistakes and false info.

Then again, a book is harder to keep up to date than the internet.

ok, so i am prolly going to get angry replies for this but, this kind of stuff makes me irritated. Like guitar hero is fun and all but like...PLAY REAL GUITAR it is SO much more satisfying than playing a plastic guitar lol. like sure kudos man, your good, but freaking aye, take the $100 from buying that game and put it towards a guitar. lol i sound like an ignorant pr1ck but i have kept my mouth shut about this stuff before and i made an account for times like this to speak my mind.....welp, i feel better now, Im not sure wat i accomplished by saying that haha...peace out!

   Re: Shatterdome - 2009-02-08
 » Well....you accomplished nothing :P

However, I agree with you....the time, and money this kid has put into guitar hero....he could have been a decent and maybe really good, actual, guitar player.

The article says he's broken 80 periphreals so far....if they mean guitars, than that is like 3,000+ dollars in broken guitar hero controllers....unless he keeps getting them on warranty...

   Re: andre_euro - 2009-02-08
 » or

cud b sum sort of sponsorship :P

   Re: Navani - 2009-02-08
 » Ugh to you.

How do you know he doesn't play real guitar? I know plenty of people who play Guitar Hero and actually play guitar. Anyway, it's just a game.. It's like you telling that old Super Smash Bros Melee champion to stop playing the game and start fighting in real life. I'm sure he's broken a couple controllers.

   Re: Specht - 2009-02-08
 » I swear...

If Guitar Hero didn't have the word "guitar" in it and the controller looked nothing like a real guitar, nobody would complain like this.

I agree that real guitar is much more satisfying, but how is this any different than somebody playing DDR? You don't see people telling them to get dance lessons...

I guess I'm just sick of seeing someone say "play real guitar" every time Guitar Hero is even mentioned on the internet.

   Re: Speed - 2009-02-08
 » ya, but...

thats like saying, stop playing these first-person shooter/army games, and actually join the army and shoot people and what not. I don't get why people get so rattled about this. It's just a game. Playing Guitar Hero is nothing like playing real guitar, so saying that doesn't really work. Guitar Hero is a fun game, Guitar is a fun instrument.

   Re: z0m13ie - 2009-02-08
 » @Specht

But people who play DDR, and are good at it, usually are amazing at dancing irl.

So.. YOU stop whining, BIG_SHOT89 has a point.

   Re: *****bandit - 2009-02-09
 » i agree

I haven't said nothin on this matter either, but I'm one who fails to see the excitement in guitar hero. and you cant deny that big_shot89 has a point. lol and no you CAN'T compare this to other genres like fighting games and shooter's, that's just illogical. this and wii sports make NO sense to me because.. why mimic everyday activities, when the real thing is more rewarding and satisfying? and lol c'mon have u seen some DDR experts? those guys can play the game and make it look sweet. and i'm not talkin bout the casual players who only know how to jump and stomp their feet. and also.. the game is basically a fancy controller that looks like a guitar, it's just four stupid buttons lol, just give me a normal controller? im not gonna knock anybody for liking this game but good god, all the money gone to waste on a stupid concept, and all every release of the game is, is more songs? just wish i was the lucky idiot behind this idea, id be rollin in cash. it's almost as bad as that stripper pole I've seen them selling on T.V.

   Re: *****bandit - 2009-02-09
 » @Navani

"Anyway, it's just a game.. It's like you telling that old Super Smash Bros Melee champion to stop playing the game and start fighting in real life."

lol I'd tell that person to try playing a decent fighting game first, he'll end up hurting himself tryin to change into a pokemon and shoot thunderbolts out his ass. that's seriously a dumb analogy. and if you told me to stop playing fighting games and take up real fighting, i just might go learn some martial arts, at least it would be useful. maybe you're thinking cuz both guitar hero and super smash brothers involve the same thing to compare them; button mashing and no real skill!

   Re: ISOHaven - 2009-02-09
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Everyone is right, only if they are speaking for themselves. I enjoy playing guitar on Rockband but I HATE playing a real guitar. I took lessons and I hated it. Dropped it right away.

This is a video game, it's completely DIFFERENT from paying a real guitar. This is what he likes and that's all that matters.

   by nomder - 2009-02-08
 » 65 Years from now.....

Someday, when this kid is old and gray, he'll tell his grand kids the story of how he broke a record in the Guinness Book of World Records. "For what?" his kids will ask. And he will reply, "In my day, I got a lot of points and recognition because I could push buttons really fast and accurately on a plastic guitar!!!"

Then he'll go to the closet and remove his old, cracked, plastic guitar and then sit in a chair. "Gather around everyone!" he'll say. And when they do, he'll close his eyes and those plastic buttons will take him to another time and another place. Everyone else will see a strange old man, sitting in a chair, pushing plastic buttons in a frenzy to the sound of plastic on plastic. But to him, the old man in the chair, he will see colors flashing across his mind and hear someone else's music every time he presses those Plastic Buttons......click, click, click, click......

 » Hmph.

Honestly, it's not a huge deal anymore. It's a video game. The only reason it gets the kind of attention it does is because it was such a widespread phenomenon (spelling?). Yes, it takes lots of practice and sugar to skillfully mash buttons at blazing speeds accurately. It's the satisfaction of completing it on the hardest difficulty, 100% completion. You know what i'm really good at? When I grab my favorite pron, and skillfully jerk the right spots...and I always get 100% completion, blind folded or not.

» oh damn i just noticed...

the kid is a muslim, a jihadist?! he should be setting records for Crazy Taxi then!!!!!!!!! not guitar hero lol!

   Re: *****bandit - 2009-02-09
 » hang on wait..

he "broke" several peripherals? yeah i think what they mean is he sent out other muslims strapped with plastic guitars, laced with bombs and they were used for suicide bombs! this news oughta remind us to look for any suspicious characters tryin to get onto airplanes with plastic guitars.

   Re: Datnizzle - 2009-02-09
 » Yeah...

Danny Johnson the "jihadist", yeah that's pretty stupid. Maybe he just plays Call of Duty, he can run around and shot Marines all day.
By the way, just because someone looks Arab, it doesn't mean he's a Muslim. Not all Arabs are Muslims you know. Especially if his name is DANNY JOHNSON.

   Re: *****bandit - 2009-02-09

Yes and I also think all white people are KKK members. All Japanese people are Chinese, and all hispanics are immigrant workers who can't speak any english! man someone is late for the sarcasm joke train. -_-
   by da07flopro - 2009-02-09
 » classically trained

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but I watched him break the record on youtube and this kid is classically trained in about 3 different instruments lol... so all this plastic guitar bashing is moot since he can probably play more real instruments than most people...

   Re: *****bandit - 2009-02-09
 » yeah okay..

I really don't care if someone is multi-talented. nothing changes the fact that it's a plastic guitar with four buttons that functions in the same fashion as DDR and it's overrated crap. Nobody is seriously that ignorant to really think it's impossible to play a game and real instruments. What you want a cookie or somethin for pointing that out? seriously i don't care if he does a one-man band show on the weekends, a plastic guitar is retarded.

   Re: *****bandit - 2009-02-09

passionate? no. It's called an opinion. You should try having one. There's better things to occupy your time with is all I'm tryin to say. If you wanna make it personal I could say you're some kinda super geek with an undying passion for youtube and home entertainment. But I wouldn't go there, that's irrelevant to the subject at hand. Or maybe it isn't.

 » haha

BTW anyone who is a "Real guitarist" and compains about guitar hero being pointless or sucking obviously is either lying about being a real guitarist, or has never actually played guitar hero.

so take it from an actual 10 year guitar player, if you are a guitar player, for craps sake, get guitar hero.

it will improve your rythm, it will impove your speed, it will improve your dexterity, and if you are like me, time spent practicing "sinks into" the wrinkles in my mind during the breaks between practicing (take frequent breaks is a tip ive always heard from instructors . . probably because i literally hurt myself sometimes.) and those breaks are filled perfectly by some nice relaxing game time via guitar hero.
